I've never used any audio guided tech for routing except satnav in the car and was wondering how the various android phone friendly apps worked when you don't want to keep looking at screen ?.I have viewranger but believe that just gives sounds to aid you rather than clear direction . Can anyone advise if such an app exists and if yes which one works well? Thanks in advance

Bill

Google Maps is pretty good but I've never used it (or any nav app) without being able to glance at the screen, why's that a problem?

Google maps. Gives clear, constantly up to date, audible directions including street names.

As good or better than any built in car sat nav I've ever used but always more current.

google maps. I've used it for ages, but for the first time the other day I did a journey purely by voice guidance... it worked perfectly with very clear turn instructions.

Just to clarify .so you can plan complex off road routes and get audible directions from Google maps even without a signal? Seems like I didn't make myself clear that it was for bike use and having crap eyesight Looking at a screen can be challenging .

Offroad I think you'll struggle.... For a start offroad junctions have nothing like the definition of road junctions (layout, road names etc...) so to get a 'voice' to describe what to do would be nearly impossible. THe demand for this type of app must be tiny relative to cars so doubt there is much motivation for app developers to develop anything other than basic 'bear left' or 'bear right'.

Personally I think being familiar with maps and using an app which uses the mapping you are familiar with is the best bet perhaps with a larger phone screen and/or zoomed in closer. You then get an actual appreciation of where you are in case it all goes belly up.

OsmAnd can give voice directions, should work off-road on paths etc.

I'd doubt such a thing is practical. Anything off road would probably rely on being predominantly visual in nature.

What do you expect it to say to you?

If it issues directions using North and South etc or compass bearings you'd still need to look at a compass to make sense of them.

"Left a bit....right a bit"?

"There should be a hedge with a hole in it"?

yeah, ummm, dunno. offroad even the best visual ones are a "bit" vague. I often get the equivalent of "Yeah, that way I reckon, I mean what's the worst that can happen..."

You've posted in the wrong forum, hence the confusion.

You'll not really get anything like a car Satnav for off-road routes.
