I only recently learned about this incident as I was riding my bike there, and it was an utterly horrific way for them to die

First I’ve heard about this, deeply upsetting for the poor blokes family, but also incredibly worrying for the surrounding community, considering how much the sinkhole is expanding!
Horrible incident. What shocked me was the statement that it might tale 2-3 years to be repaired. That seems a very long time in Japan where such things are usually done so quickly. Imagine if it happened here. The hole would there for decades!
What happened?
maybe read the report OP.
Did you read the bit where the driver was in contact with emergency service immediately after the incident. Assuming he is still in the cab he tied alone, waiting for help to arrive, they guys looking for him were forced back by hydrogen sulphide.
Maybe read about dying from hydrogen sulphide and the effects on the human body before you die.
Then come back and let us know whether you lame joke attempt was worth it.
