What do you think is the best pop record of all time? Not looking for the most important, largest selling or notorious - just the most perfect.
Needs to be reasonably well known - or it doesn’t really qualify as ‘pop’ - none of STW’s favourite achingly cool favourites! 😉
So let us have your contenders! This is mine - sorry for the fact I had to use a movie clip for it. Marvin Gaye - I Heard it Through the Grapevine
^^ really not convinced. 😀
abba. dancing queen.
Mmm Bop - Hanson
Groove is in the heart - Deee-Lite
or,
I'm a believer - The Monkees
Poptastic.
Don’t know if it’s best, but I’ve always loved ‘God Only Knows’ by the Beach Boys.
It’s a cheesy throwaway pop on at first listen but has a really depth and warmth.
Ghah!! If you are not accepting of Black Lace.. have
Instead..
Catchy tune, hotpants, what more could you want?
that one off Titanic by Sealion Dyin'
#bollocksthread
Or.. ha’ ya by Outcast
Teardrop Explodes - Reward. 3 minutes of pop perfection!
Voyage voyage, desireless
Has to be Abba and dancing Queen is a good choice
Hey Yah is a good one, can’t believe it’s 15 years old (give or take)
Straight in at number 1.
Or.. Poker Face .. Lardy GrrrGrr
I’m bored now, the subject matter is beyond my whiskey fuddled brain.
Gonna be a hard thread. Just one that springs to mind . Perfect 10~ beautiful south
Ghah! I’m back..
Considering it’s just belting down again outside I’m proposing this nugget of exquisite song writing..
If we're talking proper pop music, I nominate this...
You're all wrong. It's obviously Whitney
Some dubious definitions of "pop" here.
Feeling old? Toni Basil is in her mid 70s now...
Because I'm a fanboy, I'll offer:
Toni Basil , inspired choice. Wasn't she about 40 or something when she did that?
In the words of Alan P... A-haaaaaaa!
Nope, I have more..
Ace of Base - The Sign
&
All that she wants
End of thread...
River Deep Mountain High - Ike & Tina Turner.
Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival
curiousyellow - MemberEnd of thread...
Dear sweet lord baby jesus and the wee donkey no. I did a music video with John oNeil in the late 90s and even he hated that song with a passion.
Supergrass - Alright
Mark and Lard said so ..... so musical fact
Some great suggestions.
Bikebouy - have you sought professional help?
Don't like Abba but did they ever write a duff tune?
My all time favourite pop song, Come on Eileen. I was 12 and my teacher was called Eileen. In the days when knowing your teacher's first name was somehow taboo. She probably doesn't have such fond memories of the song.
Contender: Echo Beach.
Yes, but I’ve now got Ace of Base on full whack on the headphones and dancing around the living room..
I (pop) rock me.
Ohh look, iiiiiiiiiio’m back...
How did we forget this “classic” for that’s what it truly is.
Any vid that has a bloke with a cardboard box on his head, clicking his heals and God joining in is an absolute winner..
I think I’ve won.
Play what you love bikebouy. Always the best way!
It's Billie Jean. You all know it.
It's an impossible question really, but this has to be a contender:
Was gonna do 'God save the Queen' by the Sex Pistols, but that can't of been that popular because they wouldn't play it on the radio...
Was gonna do 'God save the Queen' by the Sex Pistols, but that can't of been that popular because they wouldn't play it on the radio...
Is it "popular" or the best example of "the pop genre".
You want the philosophy thread pal, I'm just here to spin phat toonz
B’Jebus.. I’m spending too much time on this.. but secretly I love it.
Las Ketchup, if you have children and if you went anywhere in mainland Europe in 2010-11 or even 12 then I guarantee you will have heard this epitome of Pop..
No no, no no no no, no no no no, it's not 2unlimited
That lmfao video is great.
My votes for girls aloud biology though
Queen, don't stop me now or radio ga ga
Culture club,karma chameleon
Pet shop boys, west end girls
Jacko, bad

I'm gonna stop because there's so many more!
definitive pop:
Similar to this thread.
I'll with my original suggestion of 'American Pie' by Terry McLean.
if you're inflicting the ketchup song on everybody, you can have a bit of this...
Awesome !,, ^^
Akshewally, for transcending the boundaries of language an' ting, and making music global, this;
Also a contender for the best video, IMHO.
I'll see your Ketchup song & raise you with Tight Fit..
Take On Me is the strongest contender so far IMHO.
"The Fox" there put me in mind of this:
For bikebouy (it's all his fault)
De de de de de der der, de de de de de der der.......
Vengaboyz has to be up there!!
Even makes Morrissey smile
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
T Rex - Ride a White Swan
I’m sorry, no really i am.
Suspend all disbelief and seek out the album by LMFAO, Sorry for Party Rocking. If for once in your life you just stick it on and play it so loud until the fish jump out of your iddy biddy fish tank and the wife walks out you will have reached the zenith, nee the epitome of dance pop..
I give you..
LMFAO, Sooooorrrry for Partyyyyyy Rooooockin
The sum of Awe headed my way and smacked me square on the forehead
Borderline by Madonna
Relax by Frankie, anything that annoys that oaf Mike Reed
You think it still annoys him 30 odd years later?
Transvision Vamp
Stop, collaborate and listen,
Thanks for playing, thanks to the OP for askin’
I love this sort of thing, free thinking (some of us) and just gettin’ in the groove..
I’d like to post Ace of Base’s rendition of “Cruel Summer” because it’s .. well ..Ace, but as the sayin’ goes you can’t beat the original (sometimes you can)
So, thank you and good night.. Bananrama’s “Cruel Summer”
It occurs to me that you're all wrong.
As said earlier.
Teenage Kicks by the Undertones.
It's just the perfect pop single.
If it wasn't for the complete t*t singing it ..
As a pop song ..Ziggy Stardust ..Bowie
Teenage Kicks. Approximately 2 mins 30 secs of perfection.
? yep ?
Teenage kicks and ever fallen in love come near the top but possibly beaten for poppiness by this one.
Even McCartney says God Only Knows is the most perfect pop song ever recorded!
Having said that, there are dozens, nay hundreds of great pop songs out there, ABBA have made a significant contribution just by themselves, then there’s the Beatles...
However, I’ve loved this song since I first heard it forty-six years ago, and it’s still stands out as a fantastic piece of pop music:
And don’t even think of comparing it with the shitty cover by the Happy bloody Mondays!
Please shut down thread on terms of humanity
*edit
Ah, can't decide so going with Stereolab!
Papa don't preach - Madonna.
