What do you think is the best pop record of all time? Not looking for the most important, largest selling or notorious - just the most perfect.

Needs to be reasonably well known - or it doesn’t really qualify as ‘pop’ - none of STW’s favourite achingly cool favourites! 😉

So let us have your contenders! This is mine - sorry for the fact I had to use a movie clip for it. Marvin Gaye - I Heard it Through the Grapevine

Don’t know if it’s best, but I’ve always loved ‘God Only Knows’ by the Beach Boys.

It’s a cheesy throwaway pop on at first listen but has a really depth and warmth.

Some dubious definitions of "pop" here.

Feeling old? Toni Basil is in her mid 70s now...

Because I'm a fanboy, I'll offer:

Toni Basil , inspired choice. Wasn't she about 40 or something when she did that?

Don't like Abba but did they ever write a duff tune?

My all time favourite pop song, Come on Eileen. I was 12 and my teacher was called Eileen. In the days when knowing your teacher's first name was somehow taboo. She probably doesn't have such fond memories of the song.

Contender: Echo Beach.

Yes, but I’ve now got Ace of Base on full whack on the headphones and dancing around the living room..

Ohh look, iiiiiiiiiio’m back...

How did we forget this “classic” for that’s what it truly is.
Any vid that has a bloke with a cardboard box on his head, clicking his heals and God joining in is an absolute winner..
I think I’ve won.

It's an impossible question really, but this has to be a contender:

Was gonna do 'God save the Queen' by the Sex Pistols, but that can't of been that popular because they wouldn't play it on the radio...

Is it "popular" or the best example of "the pop genre".

Las Ketchup, if you have children and if you went anywhere in mainland Europe in 2010-11 or even 12 then I guarantee you will have heard this epitome of Pop..

I’m sorry, no really i am.

Suspend all disbelief and seek out the album by LMFAO, Sorry for Party Rocking. If for once in your life you just stick it on and play it so loud until the fish jump out of your iddy biddy fish tank and the wife walks out you will have reached the zenith, nee the epitome of dance pop..

I give you..

LMFAO, Sooooorrrry for Partyyyyyy Rooooockin

The sum of Awe headed my way and smacked me square on the forehead

Thanks for playing, thanks to the OP for askin’
I love this sort of thing, free thinking (some of us) and just gettin’ in the groove..
I’d like to post Ace of Base’s rendition of “Cruel Summer” because it’s .. well ..Ace, but as the sayin’ goes you can’t beat the original (sometimes you can)

So, thank you and good night.. Bananrama’s “Cruel Summer”

Even McCartney says God Only Knows is the most perfect pop song ever recorded!
Having said that, there are dozens, nay hundreds of great pop songs out there, ABBA have made a significant contribution just by themselves, then there’s the Beatles...
However, I’ve loved this song since I first heard it forty-six years ago, and it’s still stands out as a fantastic piece of pop music:

And don’t even think of comparing it with the shitty cover by the Happy bloody Mondays!
