Sat on the prom at Weymouth town beach which is pretty good, ice cream and tat shops for the kids with a reasonable view. Not too busy with good parking near by.

Where else is good nearby? I prefer my beaches to be a bit more wild but it has to have a toilet to keep the wife happy.

Also Where's good for XC bimbling? I see the ridge above the white horse is all bridleway so will try up there tomorrow.

Walk towards durdle door. Several beaches on the way with varying levels of civilisation.

Up on Portland around the quarries can be fun. A nice ride from Weymouth on the Rodwell trail to Portland fora beer at the Cove House Inn.

interesting stoney beach with facilities by the Cove House. Inn, plus inside Portland by the sailing academy is fun, as is Billy Winters at Ferrybridge just before the trek across the causeway to Portland. Lots of kite surfers to watch and decent enough food. Chesil side of the road has a cafe, loos and birdwatching place.

when I'm home tonight I'll post you a few more bits. Here is my favourite radio controller glider spot up by the White Horse ( a good walk up from Sutton Poyntze). Lulworth Cave and Durdle Dor are a must.

Oooh! Try the sculpture quarry at Tout Quarry on Portland. For a nice pub overlooking the harbour with views from the terrace and good food try the Nothe Tavern and then walk down to the harbour and get rowed across by the ferryman.

For good family food and a big car park try the SpyGlass at Overcombe corner. Nice beach down there too.

I was at a breezy Worbarrow Bay yesterday, the water was amazingly warm. Lovely wild empty beach with toilets about a mile away at the car park, so I'm not sure if that would keep Mrs Jekkyl happy. Park at Tyneham village, worth a visit itself if you haven't been before.

Bit more wild?

The reserved section of Knoll Beach at Studland Bay, perhaps?

Weymouth Beach is nice. Sandy down the town end. Shingle as you head north, the locals tend to use the Greenhill and Overcombe sections of the beach leaving the sandy town centre to the visitors.

Heading out of Weymouth you've got Osmington, Ringstead, Durdle Door, Man O'War Bay, Lulworth, Worbarrow (near Tyneham) Kimmeridge, Swanage and Studland. I may have missed a few out. All shingle (apart from Swanage and Studland) but a bit more out there with less facilities. All busy this time of year unfortunately. I think you'll be lucky to find 'wild' + 'toilet for mrs'.

And you've got 20 miles of Chesil Beach in the other direction. Not the best for swimming but a heck of a lot more wild especially if it's blowing from the west.

For XC bimbling. A cheeky (all footpath) lap of Portland is fun. West Cliff is great. Yes there are some good bridleways up above the White Horse. All of the inland coast path (which is bridleway) is great with some cracking views. Ride up to the top of the ridgeway and follow it west to Hardy's Monument or East over the White Horse and beyond.

As the sea's fairly warm you could try the blue trail at Kimmeridge beach.  Not on a bike though.

If you’re going over to Portland find Church Ope Cove remote beach down about 100 steps with toilets, favourite and best kept secret on Portland. (Was)
