So for the past 4 years or so I have been a member of the bearded crew - albeit not a very prominent member.

Ive now handed in my singlespeed and sandals and have gone clean shaven - well almost.

I've never really gotten on with electric shavers preferring wet shaves.

That said I have always suffered from razor burn.

Plan is to now be clean shaven and so need razor and gel/soap suggestions for my girly soft face.

Can thee help?

Hang on? Er, this is STW. You know Grandpa's rusty kitchen knife is the shaving equipment of choice on here, don't you?

Nivea shave gel and a Mach 3 works just fine for me. Takes me all of 3 mins to shave and I never* cut myself.

*maybe occasionally.

King of shaves gel (or if you don't have thick ginger bristles that clog a razor - oil) and mach 3 for my preference...

Supermarket own brand disposable razors and gel.

Cheap and work perfectly.

Merkur Razor

[img] [/img]

Geof. Trumper

[img] [/img]

Astra Blades

[img] [/img]

You can buy a 100 blades for about [s]£15[/s] £9 and they'll last over a year, the razor a lifetime and the Shaving Cream at least 6 months if not more. Far cheaper and better than supermarket or gilette.

Brush and bowl works best for me. Currently using Trumper's Sandalwood as well, but soap rather than cream.

Razors? Whatever two or three bladed disposables are on special offer in Waitrose. Changed regularly.

King of Shaves gel (the sensitive skin one, natch) and a Gillette Fusion.

Can't be arsed messing about with neolithic shards of metal

I used to get bad shaving rash. What works for me is a Mach 3 and shaving oil - nothing else. Shaving in the shower helps too as it ensures that your bristles have softened (assuming you wash before you shave).

It might not work for you if you oily skin though. Or at least it may leave your face feeling pretty oily.

I feel so metrosexual right now 🙂

(incidentally, I use a razor pit to keep my blades sharp - seems to make a big difference in how long they last)

Sorry DezB but my knife isn't anywhere near rusty enough. I'm going to fly in some water from the dead sea for it to soak in for 5 years and then it should be ready.

Annoyingly, despite being unable to grow any hair at all on the top of my head, I can grow a 5 o'clock shadow by midday. I get through loads of blades (manly stubble 😉 ) and I have tried every razor known to man.
All cartridge types are a ripoff (the latest gillette one is £10 for 4 - £2.50 each for a lump of plastic with 5 tiny bits of steel - someone saw us coming..) and don't last long.
I've gone back to Double edge shaving- you get a closer shave and I have just bought 100 blades for £8, yup, 8p each.
I bought a nice razor (similar to the merkur above) for £20 so you need to invest a bit up front but you'll get a better shave and save a fortune in the long run.

That's why I switched bikemike I'd shave and a few hours later it'll be back plus the only cartridge style that were any good were far too expensive. I can now shave in the morning and it'll last all day and even half way to the next without looking too bad. You get a much better shave but takes a few goes to get the hang of it and after the initial layout far far cheaper.

Thanks guys 🙂

How safe are the bladed razors above?

Is it much easier to cut yourself?

KoS, Mach 3 + Nivea aftershave balm for my sensitive fizzgog.

(incidentally, I use a razor pit to keep my blades sharp - seems to make a big difference in how long they last)

And this (I believe that Clubber got the idea from me 😉 )

Reasonably safe not as safe the cartridge ones as they have little cages on to stop you getting a close shave.

Is it much easier to cut yourself?

Easy if you use the same technique as cartridge razors. You have to be gentle not pressure just lye the blade against your skin and move down smoothly and steady. After a few shaves you get the technique.

I definitely got my razor pit recommendation from here - can't recall who from but feel free to take the credit IHN 🙂

You do have to be a bit more careful than with a cartridge but the end result is better- and I never suffer razor burn now. There is a knack to it- I got a couple of nicks the first time I tried but you soon get the hang of it.
Some blokes get really geeky about it and there are whole forums devoted to it (badger and blade is about the biggest) but to be honest any decent razor (£20-£30 on amazon) blades from Astra or Gillette and shaving gel/oil of your choice and you'll be fine.

Definitely got to be DE but my favourite blades are Feather Hi-Stainless.

I Like gilette 7 o'clocks too but not the yellows, the black super platinums is where it's at, 99.5% as sharp as the feathers but stay sharp much longer than the feathers

^ this. Been DE shaving for about 4 years now and can't imagine going back.
Palmolive shave stick for 50p is awesome value but I also use posh stuff occasionally (for the smell).

When you shower in the morning just have a quick run round with a gillette g2 whilst your face is still wet, no need for any poncey perfumed lotions, potions or emollients of any kind !

A small hand held mirror can come in handy for this.

Wilkinson Sword Quattro Sensitive, the best shaving equipment I've come across in 40 years. It's an electric wetshave but the shaver only costs £9 (all on Amazon). Couldn't recommend this more highly, and I don't work for WS.

This might be heretical, but for the sake of sustainability can anyone recommend a decent and competitively-priced electric shaver for the same issue as the OP? When I need a close shave I'm a Bic sensitive man, but get this nasty rash when it grows out, which is why I usually don't shave.

Not sure if I'm ready for the beardtrackworld of these bladed razors.

Clobber,

Amazon I think although I may have found the dealer on Amazon seller them cheaper on ebay.

I'll try to find the invoice.

the sensitive king of shaves kinexium serum stuff :

http://www.shave.com/shop/shaving/kinexium-shave-serum-cooling-menthol-50ml/

(the gel isn't as good)

and a wilkinson sword hydro 3 razor

seems to be a good combination - much less drag than the fusion or mach with their stupid strips that wear out and get draggier with time.

The hydro 5 (5 blades instead of 3) doesn't clear as well and I don't think is good, although I use the hydro 5 body with the battery and vibrate function which I reserve for the tricky bits on the neck by the adams apple.

This system also seems to remain usable for a LOT longer than the others, like the fusion, so long that I forget the interval at which I change cartridges.

I have a flashy Merkur and several types of blades, but it is a much slower process and not really suitable for trying to get up fast and out the door in time to catch the train. Plus it is easier to nick yourself.

I agree, but a DE shave is more enjoyable/satisfying if you've got time for it

Without reading all the above 😳 I have found that mixing a small amount of E45 cream with my shaving gel works a treat. Leave it on for a few mins prior to shaving.

I'm a signed up member of the DE blade + brush and decent cream crew.

It takes a while to get a decent technique. It's not a quick shave IME.

I got given some of this for Xmas:

[img] [/img]

And occasionally use it with my DE when I need a quicker shave. I guess it would be great with Gilette / Wilkinson cartridge razors as well. Nice menthol feel to it.

Core - yes I do.. if I used DE then its every time, if I use Mach 3 then only if I go over the same spot too many times (usually either side of the centre of my chin).
