I'm travelling by car next week to Germany and wondering where's worth going or what's worth seeing in or near the regions around Aachen, Cologne, Bonn and further South down the Rhine
Specifically, the blue area on this map here:

Cologne is an obvious start but rammed to the gunnels. We kind of stumbled upon Koblenz , a smaller less known city further south. Beatiuful situation. On the concfluence of the Mosel and Rhine rivers, with a massive fort overlooking the compact city centre reached by a cable car over the river. We got up there only to find out there was a Playmobil 40th anniversary exhibition going on...absolutely fascinating for kids and us, even made a pal...

Anyway Koblenz was delightful...

Was shut when I visited (Sunday) thankfully!
Just noticed the link in the first post doesn't work: http://goo.gl/FkdiQb
Pretty sure the picture gives enough anyway.
If you can be bothered going towards Frankfurt, Mainz is nice too (Frankfurt is a nice visit but it's further again). However just the drive down the Rhine from Koblenz to around Bingen is really lovely. Aachen is a bit of a crap hole due to the massive amount of war damage and Bonn seemed okay when I stopped there for a beer and a bit of lunch.
As I live pretty close I tend to visit a lot of places for work or just passing by so I'm a bit useless for specific advice. I can point you around Cologne a bit if you go though, spent a fair bit of time there over the years.
