I've just been out for a cheeky lunchtime ride. A quick 10miles around Cragg Quarry etc.

On the last road climb back to my house I felt a bit dizzy; I think stopping would be a good idea.

There is a gap and then a samaritan is helping me off the floor. I've checked out for a spell. My scragged elbows shows I've hit the road with a bash.

It's hot, but not that hot. I'm hungry, but not that hungry. I feel a bit lightheaded, but not more than if i'd had an extra espresso in the morning.

For further context, being a man of a certain age, I had a health check last week and all was well.

What on earth has gone on there?

Needless to say, this is a new experience.

Best get off to hospital for a check. Got a walk-in near you?

Hopefully all is well and you've just had a minor heat stroke and/or dehydration and/or the old cycling bonk.

One time on delivery as a postie in my first few months I felt a bit dizzy, bought a choccy bar or two for a quick sugar fix and sat on my postie bike to eat it. Next thing I knew, I'm coming around on the pavement with someone over me asking if I was ok.

There is a minor injuries unit - does this count?

Yeah, I would pop in there and just get a check.

Yep, get checked - losing a chunk of time is not usually a good sign

Clearly a case of badger AIDS, the bad type.

Hope all is well though, let us know how you get on. Definitely a case for Duty doc at GP surgery, minor injuries or 111

Combination of a minor heatstroke and a bonk. Has happened to me when the weather gets warm. I don't cycle in the heat.

Back from the MI unit and none the wiser.

Did BP, HR and a quick EEG. All normal. They were more concerned with my shredded elbow.

I've got a lot of "it could be..." but nothing i can do anything with.

Weirdly, there was a dead badger on a nearby road yesterday....

Letters guess.

Riding outside the envelope?

He didn't get heatstroke and bonk on a 10 mile ride in 25C heat for goodness' sake.

Correct. He got badger AIDS from the dead badger. It is so obvious, I really shouldn't have ot point this out. Its really black and white, with pointy teeth.

OP - Glad you got checked out a similar thing happened to me around 18 months ago.

Hospital checked me over and found I had a bicuspid Aortic valve resulting in Aortic valve replacement surgery last year.

Had something like that happen in the changing room after getting out of a swimming pool once, but I did remember slowly fading out thinking this isn't right and trying to muster enough energy to reach for my phone. Fortunately was sat down and woke up soon after.

That's probably postural hypotension but that doesn't sound quite like the OP. I get this sometimes when hot/tired/dehydrated, typically when I stand up having been sitting for a while resting after some sort of exercise. Usually I catch it in time by crouching/kneeling for a few seconds until it passes, just once or twice in my life I've actually blacked out and found myself on the floor.

Happened to me, only followed by confusion, blinding headache and left side numbness…. Needless to say, I listen very carefully to my body these days, and never ride in more than 30 degree heat. Best get checked OP.

I sometimes get it after a shock (mainly crashing) or when I'm sick... Basically stress induced. It hasn't happened for years. But I'm surprised you weren't referred for more detailed investigations. Perhaps there's not the resources these days.

No but dehydration could have caused it. This set off an alarm bell for me :

I felt a bit dizzy; I think stopping would be a good idea.

I reckon stopping might have been the problem if dehydration was the issue.

One extremely hot day last summer I was on a road ride with a few friends when it became obvious that I was getting in serious difficulties. One of my riding buddies was a very experienced and very senior nurse, she was convinced that it was dehydration despite the fact that I had drank quite a lot of water. She said that it just hadn't been sufficient for someone my size on an arduous hilly bike ride on an extremely hot day.

Now this where it gets interesting....... despite being totally knackered if I stopped pedaling my vision would very quickly be affected and I would feel with complete certainty that I was about to pass out.

I recognised the symptoms as those caused by a huge drop in blood pressure. Which is hardly surprising because that's what happens when you are dehydrated. Pedaling kept my blood pressure up, even just slowing cranking the pedals, and stopping was the worse thing that I could do, despite being knackered.

Eventually I got over it by constantly drinking (bought some fresh milk in a shop)

If the OP felt dizzy then dehydration could well have been the problem and stopping was the thing that pushed him over the edge by making his blood pressure fall further causing him to faint.

minor injuries role here is to look fir and rule out any critical or life threatening issues.

GP visit needed to see if further investigation is needed

Dehydrated and low blood sugar. I’ve nearly passed out just walking around the shops in Bristol once. This was late morning, and back then I didn’t bother with breakfast, or drinking very much, and all of a sudden I get a rushing noise in my ears, bright spots in my eyes, then my vision went black. I was standing up, but couldn’t see anything, and while trying to find something to sit on I walked into a shop door! Stayed upright, but I felt sort of sweaty but cold, and eventually my vision came back.

I always make sure I have something to eat and plenty to drink these days.

As a follow up, I got a call from my GP with the results of the blood they took. All normal.

I have been threatened with a 3 day EEG test, but there is a wait for the kit. I can see a speculative prescription for Beta blockers coming my way

In the meantime the exercise advice is carry on, but don't do a lot of massive max hr climbs, drink and fuel appropriately.

Hmm

Happened to me, only followed by confusion, blinding headache and left side numbness….

A fit and healthy colleague had the above symptoms (not sure if he blacked as he was having a snooze due to feeling rubbish but woke up with loss of vision) and despite being able to raise arms and speak, he correctly diagnosed himself as having a stroke and got his wife to ring 999. He has recovered, mainly, and back at work.

Remember if you start drinking more than normal due to dehydration or whatever, don't overdo it unless you are drinking something isotonic or similar, such as milk or milkshake.
