Hmmmm. Seems I've lost feeling in the right side of me face, tongue and lips. So much so drinking is difficult, right eye is difficult to squeeze shut on its own.

.

Its not a stroke, i can lift both arms, hold them level, but this is new for sure. Might have a bit of a weaker feeling in the right arm, but thats maybe the way im sitting to type

.

Wondered if it might be caused by sleeping on my right side, but as this is now day 2, I dont think its that.

Quick google (I know lol) does suggest something like Bell's Palsy, but it might be something else, though what I couldnt say.

.

Any medical aficionados in the house come across this before ?.

I'm unlikely to rush out to the doctors, or hospital. I'll possibly try to make an appointment, though with my GP seems to be phone appointments only, so pretty much useless as that goes. Can only sit and see if i can develop a new way of drinking my coffee without it dribbling out the side 😆

Hey ho, isnt life interesting  🙂

I had it a few years ago, go and see the doc they should prescribe steroids which should increase your chances of a full recovery.

I didn't quite make a full recovery (I wasn't prescribed steroids, they just said it'll clear on its own) and now I have a slightly wonky face, and my tear duct on the left side is incorrectly wired to my taste buds such that if I eat nice food my left eye waters instead of the food causing me to salivate.

When you do go to the doc (or a and e) be prepared for a load of student docs to want to have a look at you as they don't see this very often and like to use you to understand the difference between this and a stroke.

you don't have to have all the signs, and if it is a stroke then time is of the essence, phone nhs and let them decide whats appropriate

Dial 111 and speak to someone. As recommended to me after a TIA. Got me an appointment very quickly.

Its not a stroke,

Would it not be prudent to ask a doctor for an opinion? You always have the option of ignoring them if you don't like their answer.

Phone 999.

Better to have a stroke ruled out by medical professionals than assume its not and be wrong

ok ok 😆 I've phoned the local GP, and been given a phone appointment for tomorrow evening.

As said this is day 2, so if it were something serious, I probably wouldnt be typing this 😆  Either way, my name isnt King anything, so I'll just have to wait like the other plebs

A&E if you can get someone to take you or 999

Edit: Hmm day 2 - not really 999 territory, but I would still be going to A&E as its the quickest route in to speciality care (which you will need regardless)

A&E will see you faster than gp.

Seriously - when I had it I was also confident it wasnt a stroke, but it was still prudent to go to A&E just in case, and the faster you start steroid treatment the more likely you to make a full recovery. Worst case (if itsbells palsy) you dont recover at all and stay like you are, this would not be a good outcome.

Dont take no for answer on the steroids - I didnt push for them and now regret it, they'll also give you some facial exercises to do in order to try and get all the muscles and nerves working in the normal way.

You can have a stroke without having all the symptoms.  You may well be right that its not a stroke - but its also not bloody normal so this makes no sense:

I’m unlikely to rush out to the doctors, or hospital. I’ll possibly try to make an appointment, though with my GP seems to be phone appointments only, so pretty much useless as that goes. Can only sit and see if i can develop a new way of drinking my coffee without it dribbling out the side

Seek medical attention.  If you don't believe it is an emergency call your GP NOW and tell the receptionist whats wrong.  I bet either she says go to A&E or the Dr calls you back, probably today, and then over the phone they will assess if they need to see you in person (or she says come in now).

Sounds like Chris Walker disease AKA Bells Palsy. He rode British Superbikes with it a few years ago and (IIRC) made z full recovery.

Hostibule for you methinks though for a real diagnosis.

Contact GP or 111 immediately; they won't thank you for delaying and posting to an online forum asking for advice.

A&E or do you have a local walk-in place nearby? Don't delay whatever though in case it is serious.

I had similar once, except half my face was also very droopy and swollen. I phoned the GP and went in that day.  Turned out I was the 5th person that day to call in with the same symptoms and the 1st to get to the Drs.  I think the link was we had all been in the army ranges (public access bit) so something bitey/reaction-y. No idea what it was in the end and it got better by itself. But the GP had ruled out the more serious possibilities.

WTF? if my face randomly started drooping down one side to the point I was drooling I'd be straight on the phone to 111 nevermind asking for advice on STW

No, im usually quite chill and dont opt for blind panic#2 for things that are pretty much beyond my control. Happens happens you know.

What else comes under that category?  Emptying the dishwasher? 😉

nb. Good luck with the doc, hope it's nothing serious

Lets see how this goes.

my money is on Medical Admissions Unit or Speciality assessment unit, at which point it would have been quicker to go to A&E 🙂

Yes but 9 times out of 10 is a waste of time.

FFS why are folk so stubborn about going to the doctor/A&E?

The guy doing the stone cladding for my garden build was complaining about acid reflux last Thursday. My wife gave him Gaviscon but told him to go see his doctor, he laughed it off and said it was probably what he had for lunch. Dropped dead of a heart attack on Friday.

Jeesh.. I'm a GP and would immediately tell my admin staff to send a pateint to ED if they had unilatearl facial weakness..

By definition, it can't be a TIA as it's lasted 24 hours. It may well be a Bells Palsy, but if it's not then time is of the essence.
Primary care isn't an emergency service, andthis should be treated with a bit more importance than you're giving it TBH..

DrP

Edit - don't let TheFlyingOx's wife give you ANY medicine in the interim....

It’s probably Bells Palsy. It might be a stroke, or an alternative diagnosis. It’s perfectly suitable for A&E (I work in A&E) or at least urgent/same day assessment. Can you still crease all of your forehead? https://www.jems.com/patient-care/differentiating-facial-weakness-caused-b/
If Bell’s, treated with steroids and most resolve. What kind of bike have you got?😉

Been to the GP, who is thinking its Bells, and has put me on a course of steroids and an anti viral. Damn anti viral is a friggin horse tablet in size. Thankfully I can half them, but its still a problem as i cant fill my ample gob with liquid without losing some of it 😆

So basically this is going to be at least a week as a starting point, and we can only see how it goes from there. Blood pressure is fine, oxygen ok, no signs associated with stroke or symptoms other than those associated with bells. But I pretty much thought that knowing what I was feeling in conjunction with what NHS website was telling me.

.

It's all just more an annoyances than anything serious.

What kind of bike have you got?😉

Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

No hearing loss or associated shingles, that are listed with Hunters symptoms.

Though on the hearing side of things I would say sounds(on the phone eetc) on that right side seem different, louder or clearer if anything, which again is a pointer towards Bells. Slight facial swelling(Sister thinks) which again is a Bells symptom. All in all it has the signs of Bells Palsy over anything like a stroke.

Yes but 9 times out of 10 is a waste of time.

Well, in that case, every experience I've had, for myself and others, when calling 111 has fallen into the 1/10 times where it's been far from a waste of time. Just lucky I guess.

Good luck dyna-ti. 🤞🏻

Hopefully nothing serious at all, but even less serious things can have better outcomes with more prompt assessment.

FFS why are folk so stubborn about going to the doctor/A&E?

Possibly because there was a long phase on here where going to A&E was repeatedly talked of as a bad thing to do that took resources away from people that needed it  - go to a walk in centre instead etc. It was used in many instances where the advice should have been A&E were it not for A&E being under-resourced, but it became a fashionable reply at the time because of that, and it was repeated over and over again to the point it became the standard response for anyone without a leg hanging off. Dare suggest any different, and you can guess the rest.

Have you got/had shingles recently? I had similar after what I thought was an ear infection, but was localised shingles around my ear.  out of hours doctor didn’t come close enough to diagnose shingles initially (during Covid).  About a week later had facial paralysis down one side.

Doc called it Ramsey Hunt syndrome.  Initially thought Bells due the facial paralysis, but after noticing I’d seen the out of hours doc, looked in my ear etc.  Loads of  horrid steroids for 10 days and fortunately made complete recovery.

A&E a bit too late for 999 as you’ve missed any window.

Possibly because there was a long phase on here where going to A&E was repeatedly talked of as a bad thing to do that took resources away from people that needed it

Well for a lot the site people were saying to go to A&E for could been done elsewhere with minimal risk, stroke symptoms was never one of them.
