I don't really know who Talking Heads are (were?) but I like Miley Cyrus. Suspect I may be more of the target market for this, I'll give it a listen later!

I'm a fan of Mileys various cover versions and yet to hear a bad one. This keeps up that trend.

That is truly awful.

The live version is breathtaking. Still can't beat Once in a lifetime though. Please pray tell she hasn't killed that yet?

She has some fantastic songs and will go down as a underated performer. I'm no huge fan but you have to give her that, 20 year pop back catalogue is some achievement.

Talking Heads are one of the most hugely revered bands that I just don't get, so I don't mind it.

It's not as good as Achey Breaky Heart though, I'll give you that,

She's got a decent set of pipes on her (when singing the right song)

I got into Talking Heads a bit late in the mid 80s, had to catch up on the old stuff by the time Naked came out and they split. Saw Byrne touring his Rei Momo album shortly after, and it became an instant favourite. Have replaced old vinyl with CDs.

So the chances of me clicking the link are less than zero. Is nothing sacred? Is there no perception of artistic merit these days?? I can take about 10 mins of music radio before Alexa is sworn at.

While I’m a bit indifferent about Talking Heads and find Miley’s okay rather than groundbreaking, that really isn’t great. Sounds more like Lady Gaga doing a cover to be honest.

It's alright. I don't think TH would be expecting either anything groundbreaking or a slavish copy of the original, so I doubt they'd be offended.

Care to explain re the godawful ones; enquiring minds want to know.
I saw the ‘Heads play Swindon Oasis, with Dire Straits as support, on the ‘77 tour. Been a huge fan ever since, along with Byrne’s solo material, particularly ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’ with Brian Eno, and also Tom Tom Club.

Saw Byrne on his tour with St Vincent at The Roundhouse, one of the most extraordinary live performances I’ve ever seen.

I'm with debz on this one. Milleys version is equivalent to a ten ton bag of shite and ten seconds was more than enough to realise it wasnt for me.The original I only stopped listening to because a rsndom accidental finger gesture refreshed the page.

The Stop Making Sense movie version (combined with Heaven) is the one to listen to.

Don’t mind this cover. It’s not really for me. Some of the other artists on this compilation might do something more interesting though.

Not a fan of covers, but yeah some are cool. Lorde’s is good and whoever does Girlfriend Is Better does a good job. Miley might be a selling point for some people though. You know those young, modern types who know a great singer when they hear one (buried in layers of sludgy production crud)

I have a lot of time for Miley, she rocks out, has some vocal power, exudes confidence and doesn't seem to have been too damaged by a life in the limelight🤷‍♂️

I like the Blondie cover she did but I'm not linking to it as it's too risque for STW old giffers, I also like her jamming Jolene.

based on the op I don’t like either of the songs fwiw

seem to have been too damaged by a life in the limelight🤷‍♂️

She’s had her fair share of drugs and sexual performance / based actions controversy, I started to dislike here when she got all “twerky”, she seemed to be heading all  Pete  Doherty but I think luckily has recovered from that, and since/despite that has a lot of accolades

I also like her jamming Jolene.

Her Godmother is Dolly Parton don’t you know.

Miley is pretty talented IMHO, but that sounded way too over-produced for my liking. It's not as if Miley couldn't carry it on her own without having force fed it into an autotune machine that surely isn't needed.

Anyway, here's Kesha totally ruining one of my favourite songs from the 1980s.

It sounds autotuned to **** and back.  I'm with you on this.  Whether she's talented or no, it's dreadful.

The Nothing Else Matters interpretation was listenable, but you shouldn't be sung off the stage by the backing vocals (which James himself once described as "yelling in key").

You know,

Having watched a couple of videos linked from here, I think I just don't like her voice.  Which is maybe a "me" issue.  I'm an absolute sucker for a female rock vocalist but she sounds like someone went to Poundland looking for Tammy Wynette.

It's just a bit pointless... isn't it... and I really like The National.

Same goes for Lorde... great voice... but it's just a straight run through of the song. Disappointed.

Oh, and I love cover versions... when something new comes out of it.

I think the only keeper on this compilation isn't a Talking Heads song, Genius of Love, and is by people I've never heard of before... Toro y Moi & Brijean? Even more summary and sugary than the original... one for sunny parties...

Massive Talking Heads fan here - I listened and.....actually I didn't hate it. But then I quite like Miley Cyrus, though more her attitude than her music. Having teenage daughters commandeering the HiFi most of the time gives a stale white male who's appetite for new music stopped in 1997 a new lease of life.

Also, coincidently I'm just starting How Music Works which someone bought me as a present...

It's in her/the producers own style, whether you enjoy it or not is entirely up to you.  Some people love a club banger, some people love Death Metal and some people like Jazz.  Music like all art is subjective.  Labelling music as "shit" is really reductive and makes you come across as either thick, judgmental or a music snob.

I reckon Byrne's voice is so individual, and that particular song is so instantly recognisable that any artist trying to cover it is taking their life in their hands really.

She's spun it in a way that suits her 'house style' - modern country? shall we call it that? And it sort of works, and if you're not massively familiar with the original (and I'm guessing most of her fanbase won't be) then it's OK I guess.

Her cover of Zombie didn’t offend my ears.

You could plot songs on an axis from random nonsense to meaningful.  So the original sits firmly at the meaningful end of that spectrum.

Miley's cover of Zombie is great, but does it mean anything (it could be, but I've not seen her protesting against the NRA or anything). It's also not really that different to the original.

Sometimes a cover takes a song and strips it of all meaning, like Leona Lewis covering Hurt, and it's awful, instantly forgettable, or other negative platitudes.  On the other hand you get a great cover that leans on this like the Artic Monkeys absolutely wetting themselves covering the absurdity of covering Love Machine (which was hardly "meaningful" but at least made sense in it's original context).

Sometimes a song's so universal that anyone could cover it with feeling (Nothing Compares to You).

Psycho Killer was just random nonsense to start with (unless David Byrne is going to be outed as a serial killer) . And not in a brilliant high concept Flaming Lips kinda way. Katy Perry could cover it with as much credibility.

she clearly likes songs by old white guys

I was going to post the vid of her dad and lil naz x doing old town road, might as well now I've got it in my head, btu maybe a bit off topic.

the OP version is a pleasantly petshop boysy and makes me think they could have done something with it.

Daughter (23) thinks its Ok (isn't a massive Miley fan, although used to be), didn't realise its a cover, asked ('bout the original) "Is this some white dude/band that I've never heard of that you think are genius?" On listening; "He's got a weird voice, but it's also OK, sounds very Smooth FM"
