Was out on a lovely bivvy night -cracking spot, fire roaring -perfect.

Quite why I decided to pass a razor sharp blade through the top of my index finger I'll never know...!

Just waiting to be assessed - my professional optimistic verdict is just a big bleeding cut.
My pessimistic verdict is I've chuffed the tendon...
Movement mostly OK, but shall wait and see!

Some of the chaps got some good photos - not for the squeamish :-/

<MOD EDIT>
Pics inline further down, if you are squeamish turn back now.

I was there last night over the bars shot neck cracked on landing and was winded for a few mins then rode down trail home to mrs who ordered me to A&E spent an hour and half waiting to be seen and was given all clear. Neck checked okay with bruised ribs but leg is dead (I have to lift it into car etc) aches and pains all over but ok. Sounds though I am better off than you Dr p.

Spent this glorious weekend not riding the Burma road on account of a crash on Tuesday. Had to make do with a road ride on Saturday morning...not the same.
Good luck to all who have new scars for Easter! Zombie Jesus blessings.

I'd argue that was more like the bottom of your finger. The top infers towards the nail. Depends which you hold it up I suppose.

Good effort nonetheless

Just by the Knuckle it 'curls upwards' very close to the tendon!
Went through the fascia all the way down...

Great article here about using SuperGlue to close wounds such as the one above. Key points are:

1) The wound needs to be cleaned first! So not ideal out on a bivvy trip.
2) It's better to use the proper medical stuff, as it is less likely to cause irritation.
3) If you are using it on someone else, beware of litigation! (It is an American website, but prob still relevant over here)

There are other things as well, such as its not good on jagged wounds or animal bites etc.

Re: shermer75's link about using superglue, I use it regularly on cuts and suchlike, but I'm damned if I'd try using it on a cut like that, that would sting like hell!
The other problem is that continual bleeding stops the glue from setting properly as it oozes out of the cut.
Still, at least it was a nice sharp knife, and a really clean cut, it will leave a nice thin scar. 😀
[edit] just read that link, and it does say not to use superglue on: deep wounds, wounds that are bleeding, so my instinct was the right one.

wow.

not glueable imo. most things can be bodged with average bike kit, but its stuff like that reminds me why there are steristrips, to hold you together for the ride home.

dont play with knives kids.

It's true - I am an idiot! (Though I did manage to cook and eat home made Calzone on the fire before slashing myself to bits)
[img] [/img]

Essentially, I was cutting a soft sap stick to toast a hot cross bun, and did the classic 'knife faux pas' - cutting towards myself..

It's a new knife (Mora fire knife) that is uber sharp (I can vouch for this) and just split the wood and went through my finger with ease!
[img] [/img]

Knives aren't dangerous. Idiots with knives are.

However I do question you Bivvi motivation, clearly you were in a different part of the South Down when the monsoon hit ??

Secret(ish) bivi spot just North of Storrington.. Rain all the day, stopping just before we headed off.

Stay safe kids..

Also in a secret location, perhaps that's the problem?

Mora knives are incredible value. The Scandi grind bushcraft knives are really great to use. I have two (I also own a Sebenza for context and to show I'm a bit of a knife snob). Be aware though, that they are high carbon steel and will build up a patina and/or rust depending on moisture and humidity. Plenty of folks build up a great patina with various semi-caustic concoctions of fruit, onions, vinegar etc.

I have to say, as an ex-pat of quite a few years that it's great to see the Great British piss-taking over the injury. I once snapped my Achilles' tendon playing rugby and was told in no uncertain terms by the 'team medic' (I think 'least drunk spectator' is a better term) to gaffer tape it up and get back on the field. Not helpful at the time, but I look back on it with a sense of fond amusement.

I did use superglue on a cut once. Was at a party, opening a bottle of wine with an inappropriate implement, and made a sizeable incision on one of my fingers. Held it shut with Bounty for a while but it was too deep and would not stop bleeding. We were all drunk and some ex-military, so it was considered a field-expedient repair to just superglue it up to allow continued drinking. I have an awkward scar and no feeling in the top of one finger as a result.

Please excuse the ramblings. I am in an airport with time to kill and a lot of nice wine at my disposal.

Or were those butterfly stitches necessary after all.

The steristrips are used OVER the 'sewn' sutures - this was more than a steristrip job! (though duct tape, super glue, and zip ties would also have been adequate...!)

In a seriousness though what kind of first aid course would show you how to deal with this kind of thing, I carry a first aid kit that could probably deal with that properly atleast temporarily. Buggered if I would know what to do short of flushing it with saline eye wash couple of butterfly stitches and a bandage... then call the air ambulance 🙂

What I did was:
- Pressure with sterile swab and 'direct pressure' (Squeezing it)
- Wrap bandage around it
- make way to place of healthcare provision

No point trying to steristrip it in the field as there was too much blood for them to stick, I knew it needed sewing up, and faffing about failing to fix it would have led to more bleeding and more mess.
Pressure (over a dressing) as a temp fix was all that was needed.

If i was in the middle of nowhere, I'd have a)taken more kit with me, and b)used said kit to try to fix it myself.

I wasn't, so I didn't!
