A while back I made a post on Strava with some photos I took of the Route d'Occitanie race passing through a French village. The usual sort of shots....A small breakaway, then the lined out peloton with Ineos on the front.

Quite decent photos (if I say so myself 🙂  ). I don't usually do these sort of posts on Strava but thought I would this time.

Got some comments and kudos from some of the people who "follow me". Nothing strange there.

But in addition I've had quite a few kudos from people I don't know, aren't connected with me in anyway like Strava clubs and who have no actual Strava activity at all to speak of...some of them have none.

I had another one this morning from someone who last posted an activity in 2013.

Weird, I can't work out how they found my post in the first place and what they are doing on Strava.

Just seems strange tome as a new one seems to pop up every few weeks.

I get the same on Strava and Zwift. Random people giving kudos on Strava, none of whom I know and who haven't done any activity recently (so how do they even see my meagre efforts?) and also random 'Ride Ons' on Zwift from people who were not riding that day, don't know or follow me, etc.
Is it some odd algorithm designed to make people feel better? If so, we've busted it!
I've also got some Spanish chap follows me on Zwift and as soon as the pedals start turning (within seconds) he's giving me a 'Ride On'. It's all a bit stalkery.

As far as I understand activities can be shared through to the world community if you have open privacy settings, which they are by default.

I used to get the random person kudos too, until I locked down my account properly (paranoia/diligence around ride tracing and my bikes getting nicked). Now I have to accept followers as part of my privacy settings I don’t get those anymore.

Weirdly, I got an email from Strava telling me I'd lost a KOM. I have never held a Strava KOM in my mediocre life, let alone Tempus Fugit on Zwift which was the one I (it wasn't me!) allegedly have now lost.

The zwift thing......I have my strava account private. You can't see my rides. When I used to use zwift I'd get a message saying I was riding with xxx. I'm assuming because xxx was in my vicinity for enough of the ride. I could have given them kudos or likes and if they had 'investigated' me I'd look to them like my account was inactive.

Don't know if it the same thing with the OPs real world thing too.

I get irritated that I’m a local hero for taking the regular 100 meter out of my road to the main routes.

They may be riding regularly, but have their privacy settings locked down.

I default to private for all uploads, and only ever set them to visible for followers, never public.

But yep I've still had a couple random follower requests and kudos on ancient rides over the years. I assume it's just people either trying to inflate their social meeja profile, or someone trying to trace and steal my bikes. Neither of which I'm keen on...

Strava recently deleted a lot of segments on Zwift and only Zwiftinsider ones are allowed - so you might have timed it right to do the segment just as it was created and therefore took the KOM (ableit for a short time!)

@cahar sounds like you need to set a (/set a bigger) privacy zone.

When I ride somewhere on the MTB I will look at the segments to see who else rode them that day, all riders will show, i'll have a look at some of the quicker riders rides to see if any new trails have appeared that I dont know about, when looking at their rides Ill give kudos. So for some, they will get kudos from a random stranger.

I think that this may be true for some of them but others I feel may be distinctly flaky.

Btw, as  I said in my original post, this isn't about the occasional kudos I get for a ride from someone completely unknown to me, that's fairly BAU I think. This is about a little photo posting, no ride related to it which has produced a relatively high number of unknown kudos and I'm still unsure how they willhave stumbled across the posting.
