From a post on Facebook: do any of you have any weird little skills people don't know about? (The original poster learned Braille when they were 10, for fun.)

I'd probably need to have a bit of a think to do it now, but once of a time I could read and write in Wingdings.

It stemmed from back in the days of "Chat" being built into Windows. A mate and I used to swap messages at work, and we'd set the font as Wingdings so that casual observers couldn't read what we were saying. When the coast is clear, copy & paste into Notepad to decode. Over time it got to a point where we didn't have to decode them any more, we could read them like regular letters.

Seriously impressed if you can read wingdings! 😯

I don't have any skills that even come close to that!

I can take my socks and trousers off simultaneously, one leg at a time.

I use the other foot to pinch the side of the sock and bottom of the trouser leg against the floor and pull my foot out.

I have no recollection of ever having practiced it or consciously started doing it.

I do it now without even thinking about it.

I can ( or used to be able to - not done it for a while) open a matchbox with my toes, take out a match and strike it all with my toes

I can juggle, incl throwing one up high in the air and catch it again to continue the juggle movement. It's impressive for the kids on the beach on holiday. 🙂

It's actually not as hard as you might think. Stick to capitals as they're clearer and you only need to know 26 characters (some of the lower case ones are near-identical). Some of the symbols are in clusters, so for instance if it's a hand gesture it's going to be one of A to I (A being a two finger peace / victory sign); JKL are smiley faces (happy / neutral / sad) and so on.

If you look at the lower case ones, the first nine (not 12, oddly) are zodiac signs. L through W are geometric shapes (circles, squares, diamonds) and so on. I never really committed those to memory, but could probably make a reasonable fist of guessing them in context.

I can juggle

I can juggle, albeit badly. Learned how to do it one lazy afternoon at a mate's, who's really good at it.

I can yo-yo after a fashion, too. Cat's cradle is about my limit on l33t skillz with it though, yo.

and make dripping tap noises with my cheek.

Not skills so much as odd physical attributes.

Firstly, ear wiggling. Seems to require the engagement of muscles on either side of the rear potion of my head. Presumably other people have the same muscles, but what, if anything, do they use them for? If they’re not under conscious control for most people, what are they being used for? Do people prick up their ears involuntarily like animals?

Secondly, I have hypermobile thumbs to the extent that I can independently bend the upper portion of my thumb back at 90° to the lower portion. Useless for everything except frightening the squeamish and executing an effective “rubber guard” when playing thumb wars.

I can whistle without using my lips.
Used to be the best thing at school. Teacher could be staring directly at me and still not tell. I can do it doing a big toothy smile, or almost closed mouth.

This isn't that uncommon but people who can't do it think it's weird or just don't believe it- smelling snow before it snows. There's been actual scientific studies that say it can't be done but if I smell snow, it snows, 100%. Same for my dad who can do it but not either of my brothers. And not snow itself, just... pre-snow.

Making my eyeballs vibrate.

I used to think I had paranormal powers and could make TVs vibrate just by staring really hard at them. Then someone told me that this is what I was doing... 🙁

Same here. Been able to do it since fairly young and no idea how I discovered I could. Often freaked out family/friends. 😀

Only later on watching the 70s (and best) version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers did I discover someone else could do it (Brooke Adams)

[img] [/img]

I can do rotating like this but also a rapid side to side vibrate.

Not sure it counts as a skill though, but is weird.

If juggling is sufficiently weird for this thread, then I'll topper you - I can juggle whilst riding a unicycle. Badly, but then I can only juggle badly even when not riding.

So do I. Is knowledge / memory a skill, exactly? Dunno if that counts.

I can recite the alphabet backwards, and pronounce it as a single word. I can also recite it in QWERTY order.

I weirdly learnt it backward before the correct way, and can still recite it quicker backwards rather than forwards.

While being stuck on the west coast of Ireland for three months doing my undergrad dissertation project, my mate and I started speaking backwards to each other to the point where it became fluent. Can still slip into it now and then 10 years later....

I can write mirror image handwriting backwards. My financial Signature has therefore always been a mirror image of my normal one. I can also undo a bra through almost unlimited layers of clothing with my non dominant hand in an instant. But we won't go there!

I can pop my ears - loud enough for a room of people to hear.

In the same way you would hook your finger in your cheek and pop it, I can do this with my ears.

I appear to have extra large openings that make this possible (I can insert my little finger to the first knuckle in the ear hole - which I suppose is a weird skill in itself!)

I can visualise flow of people/materials/stuff - yep that is me mentally rearranging the airport/supermarket queues in my head while I wait.
I managed to devine for water.
