A little over three weeks ago I verified that gravity still works, landed awkwardly on my left side and chest and after I got home concluded I’d possibly bruised or cracked a rib or two on my left side. Sore but nothing particularly worrying.  No point on A&E/MIU. OTC pain killers seem to do the job and by start of this week was pretty much back to normal except for things like yawning, coughing, laughing etc.

But for the last 48 hrs I’ve had pain in right hand side of my rib cage, worse if I lie down, aggravated by any deep breathing, or moving around a lot.  Unable to lie on my right side, but lying on left side seems to be “working” that area more and is painful.  OTC pain killers help but only if I am careful how I position myself.  Not aware of any possible source of trauma to the RHS.

the pain is sharp, quite localised (just below my moons) and there is some tenderness (ie poking makes it a bit worse).  Fairly certain it’s not cardiac before anyone says 999 for chest pain.

so, has anyone with experience of cracked/bruised ribs ever thought it was healing nicely and then had the pain suddenly move? I guess I’m asking so that if it doesnt improve by itself over the weekend I know where to go seek help, GP, MIU, Physio, etc?

perhaps this should be in the “joys of aging” thread!

I broke multiple ribs in several places. After a few weeks my chest started hurting again and there was an audible click when I took a deep breath.

It turned out that some of the ribs had fused at one end and the click and discomfort was because the other end of the break was now ‘moving more’

Total time to pain free was about 10-12 weeks

When I did mine it took a good month before I could sleep properly without prescription co-codamol but can't remember them getting better then worse again. I do however have a floating rib which might be what you are feeling. It's sore to breathe when it moves but a big intake of breath which can be bloody sore sorts it out for me.

b&b - thanks - perhaps, bizzare if the right side was injured too but not sore at the time but the body is weird.

davie - that does sound sort of right.  Breathing hurts, shallow breaths hurt less but if I can bear it a big breath (which hurts loads) does seem to calm it down for a while.
