Weird one
My parents had a phone call (withheld number) allegedly from Parcel Force asking if they knew if our neighbours were in as they had a parcel for them.
They started the phone call with my mums full name by asking hi is this mrs......etc to which obviously my mother replied yes
He then went onto say about a parcel has been attempted delivery 2 days in a row next door and theyve left a card...but no response...did we know if they were in and he said both of their forenames but not their surnames
He then said about how it was a bug parcel from ireland and that theyd try again later
All relatively normal conversation and no other detaildls were asked for slyly
He left the phone call normal by saying thanls for your help and bye....he didnt ask for anything else at all just questions about the neighbours
Obviously my mother was a little bamboozled given he asked for her by her name and knew the names of the neighbours
After the phone call it hit her when i spoke to her about how on earth a parcel company has got my parents home phone number, address and names
No way do parcel companies or anyone else have access to that sort of info and now my parents are worried of course
There was no parcel next doorcnor were they expecting one as they have spoken to them
So whats the scam? My mother didny give any information away other than the stuff he had (name home phone number and address) all of which he had before the phone call?
So what gives whats the scam? Very very odd at no point did the guy on the phone try to get some info out of my mother about anything bank related or dob etc etc
Any ideas?
Perhaps looking for confirmation from your mum that next door were on holiday so they could be burgulurised?
Well the weird thing was they were away for a few days yes which is why my mother assumed the parcel call was genuine at first...but how did they get the info to ring my parents in the first place?
Im not sure they'd go to that extent really to rob someone
The only thing i can think is they wanted my mum to confirm who she was by answering the phone? But given she gave no other info at all, dont buy anything online, dont have internet banking etc how that info is enough to do something with im not sure?
It was very very odd
Sometimes you can leave the contact of a neighbour in case you are out. Would seem like a massive amount of work for a scam....
No way do parcel companies or anyone else have access to that sort of info and now my parents are worried of course
They do. If your parents are on the electoral register the information is there. Also, unless they are ex-directory their telephone is freely available.
http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/faq/voting-and-registration/what-is-the-electoral-register
They are on the electoral role but ex directory i checked that as i set it up for them
Next door dont really speak other than friendly hellos etc so it wont be info given by them
And there was no parcel, nor has there been any attempt either as he said hed left 2 cards which didnt exist
And if theuy got the info from electoral role how come the guy onthe phone didnt know the neighbours surname given it was them he was supposedly delivering a parcel too
Very strange it defo was not a parcel thats 10p% but what the scam was i do not know
Told them keep an eye on banks etc and direct debits ert just in case and they informed the bank who were less than helpful
I don't know what the scam is, but I think that their neighbours should be at least as concerned. Individuals opt into or out of public listing on the electoral roll and while your parents are listed their neighbours may not be
