Having some BT woes...

We organised for BT to upgrade the phone line to my gf's mum's house - basically un-weirding a historic BT installation where they, for some reason, put the master socket in the loft but got it there via running the cables feeding it under the lining room carpet.

Anyway - new line connection for improved broadband, check, master socket somewhere you can get to without a ladder, check. All good. it seems.

It becomes apparent that as part of undertaking the work they've changed the telephone number - they didn't say they did. No-one asked them to do it - but their defence seems to be that no-one asked them not to do it so really its our fault and, anyway, the numbers don't belong to us really they belong to them. After a lot of dick-about they say they've now sorted it. So sitting in the living room I dial the correct number from my mobile - the mum's phone rings - all good yes?

Life continues

except

We start getting messages from relatives - what's wrong with mum's phone? So we phone it -  it connects - no problem. But people keep telling us there is as as far as we can tell there isn't. What comes to light is - you can only call her landline successfully from a mobile. If you call from another landline its an 'invalid number'.

How does that work?

Routing issue at the exchange. Relay those findings to BT and they should be able to sort.

I'm guessing this is an oddity arising from the new line being (presumably) an IP connection via the broadband rather than a true analogue PSTN dial-up connection...?

Yup a wierd one, have come across this a few times, its an issue with the build profile, expect a few engineer visits, because it doesn’t usually show up as an issue in the profile, the SP will book an engineer to come pay a visit

As an engineer theres usually nothing wrong with the line or exchange connection. If you get a capable engineer they will chase it up with the SP

Ps can take a few goes, to get sorted. Have had this with most of the big SP’s btw

(last sentence is contractual🤣)

Sounds like a routing issue.
Another thing could be the data for the previous line hasn't been properly removed.
