Heading there Friday Afternoon old school pals meet up staying at the Premier Inn Angel St so early food and drinking with maybe some late tunes on the Friday
Probably doing the ale train thing during the day so need a food place early Saturday evening then pubs and clubs to visit preferably free to get in!
We are young 50 year olds if that makes any sense 🙂
Rich
Can't recommend anywhere very central, but Rafters in Fulwood does excellent (foodie) food, and there's the Rising Sun just up the hill for excellent and varied beer.
Or good pie and (many) good pints at the Broadfield on Abbeydale Road.
You'll need to book in advance for either of those.
Breakfast at The Forge Bakehouse just down from the Broady, or Made By Jonty on Sharrow Vale.
No name in Crookes for food and two sheds for beers - thread closed
Loads of options over Kelham island. That’s where the moustache waxers hang out
Which bits have you already sorted?
Looking for beer, ale, food, restaurant, music or other? Plenty of options in town just need to know hipster or not we should aim
Beard ratio will be 50% with one hat wearer whilst loving the odd craft beer normal good ale will do 🙂
Ignore docrob's sneer ^^^
Kelham Island is great; it's devoid of music so focus on the food and drink. Kelham Island Tavern has been great for many years; Milestone for food; Black Cat is the brewery's own pub.
Get the tram from Cathedral to Shalesmoor. West Street is student central so.....avoid.
Have a great time - become an honorary Dee-Dar.
then pubs and clubs to visit preferably free to get in!
To be honest, few clubs are free and even fewer like the idea of large groups of 50 year blokes ...
If you are looking at doing the Ale train during the day, then you probably want to be fairly central, so Kelham Island probably does tick the boxes in terms of having some of eating and drinking places - a number of pubs have late licences however it's not like the centre of town/West St).
But, If you are looking for somewhere a bit more lively for 'young' 50 year olds then Division Street/Devonshire Green *might* appeal (it's less Student-y than the parallel West Street) and has the Forum/Olde House (now called the Devonshire) 'Brew Dog', Devonshire Cat (owned by same company as 'Fat Cat' @ kelham Island but for younger, livelier, busier crowd - can take ages to get served as the staff all seem to making fancy cocktails ...). Potentially same issue with big groups of 50 yr old men - (door staff tend to be suspicious). Lower end of Division Street towards Barkers Pool has large chain establishments like Wetherspoons & Turtle Bay with older demographic - like West Street it gets younger as you move up the road - until it reaches a point where it suddenly gets older again. At the top of West Street/Division Street are the likes of the Red Deer (just off West Street) and The Bath.
It all kindof depends on what vibe you are looking for - The Green Room has Music/DJs but can be cramped or upstairs at the Forum (The Common Room) has pool tables if that's your thing ...
Personally as a 'young' 50 year old myself, I try and avoid being in town on a weekend - but that's just me! 🙂
A vote for Kelham Island. Riverside, Fat Cat, Kelham Island tavern, Old Workshop, Stew and Oyster plus a couple of random pop-ups that probably only open weekends dotted here and there. INC rooftop bar at Krynkyl next door to The Ship. Plenty to go at .
There's loads of pubs and as sheffield city centre is not to big, you don't have to restrict yourself to one particular area and can 'crawl' across the centre.
As above, Kelham island is great ( also add in Shakespeares, Bar Stewards, Gardeners Rest, Harlequin and Wellington), but is relatively limited for food.
You can easily link Kelham island into division street/devonshire green area and there's no need to get a tram, just walk and stop at pubs on the way.
Other great pubs are Rutland Arms, Sheffield Tap ( at the station), Bath Hotel and the Red Deer.
Yep if travelling by train I'd recommend the Sheffield Tap at the station.
Good to know the Fat Cat is still going. I was probably last there in 1986.
Devonshire Cat (owned by same company as ‘Fat Cat’ @ kelham Island but for younger, livelier, busier crowd – can take ages to get served as the staff all seem to making fancy cocktails …).
Actually the Dev Cat is owned by Abbeydale Brewery (Moonshine, Deception, Heathen, Voyager etc) not Kelham Island brewery. And I've not seen a huge number of cocktials in there, its more beer and keg lines these days I thought.
But to be honest, the ones that everyone are listing are all great boozers and you'll fit right in
Actually the Dev Cat is owned by Abbeydale Brewery
Interesting ... I didn't know that - I stand corrected.
I know Kelham Island Brewery took over the Sportsman (old rock pub) on Cambridge Street (and renamed it 'Tap and Tankard') but it didn't seem to last very long.
And I’ve not seen a huge number of cocktials in there
Was in there not long after the remodel (when they moved the bar from the back to the middle).
Took 20 minutes to get served as the staff were too busy making cocktails, so we didn't stay for more than one pint and moved off to The Washington ... which although it has waxed and waned a bit over the years is still a great pub and continues serving well into the early hours.
Another recommendation for The Broadfield pub for proper good food and real ale (they make their own pies)
If Indian food is your thing 7 Spices Balti is the best curry I’ve found in Sheffield so far. It’s modern and lively and walking distance from Kelham Island
the Riverside pub I’m not keen on though, and it’s the same brewery as The Broadfield. It’s OK but always crowded, noisy DJ etc.
The Itchy Pig (micropub) is worth a visit and there’s a well recommended cafe/restaurant over the road that we intend to visit. That’s called the Thyme Cafe.
many thanks guys!
Broadfield is good, So is The York at Broomhill. In fact they are all owned by the same guy (Kane) and he also owns The Forum, The Common Room, The Olde House/Devonshire. Riverside is owned by True North Brew Co I think.
Itchy Pig at Broomhill as PeterPoddy mentioned is good (just round the corner from The York.
Also worth checking out if you are 'West Side' is The Blake and The Blind Monkey (use to be the Firwood Cottage)
Whilst you have had some posher breakfast recommendations if you fancy a proper greasy spoon fry up have a wander to the Moor Café.
If you do head towards the broadfield and London road/abbeydale road then don't miss the beer engine next to Waitrose.
I knocked this up for some mates, it’s not clubby, but beery.
This I like. I don't live in Sheffield any more but still visit - Broadfield and Picture House Social are friends' locals. There's the Red Deer (is that right?) more centrally off West Street, too. Didn't see it on the map but might be.
Apologies for sneering earlier..
it sounds like you’re after what we do on our “gentleman’s lunch” on mad Friday every year. We always gravitate to Kelham Island
agree loads of great places for beer in Sheffield. Rising sun mentioned by Jon Edwards is my local. It’s a great boozer but a bit far from anywhere else. Itchy pig and the York also great. (York does food and clan feed all 9 of you. The gin flight is also worth a look) rafters does great food but it’s a very quiet place suitable for romantic meals for two rather than 9 blokes reliving their youth
tramshed does great food as well as bottles of beer. Its a bit small for 9 though
Stew and oyster at Kelham Island is a great option it does stew, and oysters ....
went to new bar called la pina the other weekend round the back of yellow arch studios has retro bikes as part of the decor does tacos but not a great beer selection. We went to the old workshop after 7.4% ipa mmmm...
ship inn is great as is Kelham Island tavern Shakespeares bar stewards all a short walk away curry at 7 spices after?
clubbing I don’t do so much any more now I’m 48 but hard to look past the leadmill surely?
Have fun!
York in Broomhill a good shout, as is kelham Island. If you want daytime beers the Stag on Psalter Lane/Sharrow Vale Road junction is awesome and does Thornbridge beers - usually 8 or 9 on.
Kettle black on ecclesall road good for late drinking and music but all a bit fake tan brigade.
Pub in station is excellent as mentioned - Def worth a trip
Enjoy!
There’s a new bar opened near Picture House Social and Broadfield called Barrowboy which should appeal if you like your craft ale hipster joints. Not been in yet personally but looks nice.
Edit: Tamper Sellers Wheel also fits the same bill for breakfast or brunch types.
Also forgot to mention that the cocktails at Public are superb. Not cheap but worth the money. Might need to queue to get in though.
Sheffield beer and cider festival is on at Kelham Museum Wednesday through to Saturday. Could be worth a look.
Did the beer festival on the Friday night and had a curry Unable to remember where or what I had!
Saturday consisted of the visiting the Tap at the station then we were bus ****ers to Hathersage and hit the pubs around there! Scotsman was great!
On the way back visited various bars on the Eccleshall Road and had food.
End of evening entertainment was a trip to the Leadmill great night and good craic with the staff and all the young uns!
5am finish yesterday hurt
