thinking of getting a ticket for the arsenal v lincoln game, and if so want to make a weekend of it with the wife.
only been to london once and dont know it at all, so looking at the logistics.
weekend would be fri 10th to sun 12th march. not too fussed about accommodation near the emirates as the footy would just be a tube journey from wherever we were at the time.
looked at train costs from either lincoln, newark or grantham, but its looking too much, so itd be a car journey to cockfosters maybe and parking up for the weekend. not sure whether they have their own car park or id have to find the nearest.
im watching the other thread about tube travel/ oyster cards etc as ive no idea whatd be best. my mate thinks you can just pay with contactless card and it works out your cheapest option, that sound right?
so..... assuming i can sort the travel, where would be a half decent place to lay our heads for 2 nights for nice eating places, decent pubs and close-ish to the touristy sights. am i likely to get anything nice for around £150?
if not ill probs forget the whole thing, as the accumulated costs of travel, footy match, food/drink and the sights would be prohibitive. but, it seems a decent chance to watch the local team and see the sights all in a one-er if i can get the logistics right.
thanks
Travelodge it's a quaint little hotel in old Southgate above cherry tree pub - Southgate tube 7 mins walk ( Southgate is two stops away from Cockfosters ) parking no problem.
15 mins on the train to arsenal-same line and another 10 into central London.
How do I know this - I live in Southgate
Just checked it's 179 for the weekend - hassle free
Airbnb?
We've just had 2 nights in a flat 1 minute from borough tube. Cost less than a premier inn would have. Issue might be booking one night only at weekend.
Edit: and yes just use your debit card contactless on tubes and buses. There is a fair cap so you won't pay more than the cost of a day travelcard
And ignore the bit about 1 night. I obviously didn't read your post
Z Hotels are good value and nice. Just don't expect a window. They also do free cheese and wine every night from 5 to 8pm. I've used them a lot for work and never had a bad time with them irrespective of which one (Victoria, Fleet Street or Shoreditch).

One of my former watering holes, along with The Fox and the Inn On The Green.
Would be a nice spot to stay, if you don't mind leafy suburbia rather than city hustle and bustle.
And you're on the right line for the Arsenal.
Go for it you will remember the experience. You can eat well in the hidden cafes so plan your eating or you will get skanked.
I usually plan london trips around sport or music, sadly you have to plan or you wont get in.
thanks a lot, had a look at the travelodge, then airbnb, looks like airbnb is quite a bit cheaper, so may chance our arm on that.
docrobster, which airbnb flat? got a link?
ill google z hotels, never heard of them.

hidden cafes? whats that all about?
thanks a lot, i appreciate any advice, very helpful.

Very true it's easy to get stung by tourist prices so worth planning where you will be going- sight, museums etc and then find out what's good/cheap nearby
If you are North ish then Camden market is worth a stroll for a sad ex punk 😉
Comedy clubs can be good shout, but pot luck, burlesque show in camden- book thru Groupon
The embankment/ river is a great photo op on a nice day, millennium wheel or shard does have good views, but costs, British museum is awesome or museum of london bit smaller and a wander round the barbican- see if there are any exhibits on there too, welcome centre on Euston road, Petrie mesueum at UCL if you like Egyptology (check times tho)
Hidden cafes as in hidden away, i always research a few, some off here where you get a decent feed for say a tenner.
Fwiw heres my last find, sorry locals....e pellicci, bethnal green rd. If you cant get in, its tiny, 5 mins walk away is the brick lane beigel bakery. I had a full blow out of home made steak pie, veg, 2 coffees, italian cake, 12 quid. As i was soaked and had cycled the lady gave me a slice of bread pudding to take away. Saturday will be rammed though.
In the west end i like govindas, the hari krishna cafe off soho squ. The curry was so hot my eyes were watering.
excellent tips thank you, its swaying my thinking towards an airbnb in the east end/ bethnal green/ old st sort of area. camden market does sound the sort of place we'd like to visit tho so maybe catch that on the way to the footy? getting some sort of plan in my head now anyway 🙂
also now thinking of driving to grantham (40 mins away) and parking for nowt at the fire station there, then getting train (station just round the corner) into kings cross. cheaper and less faff than going from lincoln.
so, once at kings cross i spose the travel options are easier than coming in from the north?
do i need to consider 'zones' at all with our tube travel or is it just much of a muchness going wherever we want and swiping our debit cards?
thanks for your help chaps
Take a look on booking.com at the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel. I often stay there for work, and as its business oriented the weekend prices are good (<£300 for 2 nights). Its very nice for the money, and just a short walk from Sloane Sq (Chelsea, Knightsbridge for great restaurants) etc and a longer walk to Westminster, Tate Britain etc.
And yes, don't worry about zones when using contactless - it'll charge you the most efficient way.
Coming into KX is good for travel - you could get a tube direct to Sloane Sq and have just 10min walk to get the above hotel, for example.
thanks OO. just looked at that hotel but its >£300 for our weekend, we're pretty much finding plenty of airbnb's (whole apartments) for around the £200+ mark around bethnal green.

a location that only exists for tourists, sad ex-punks, students and wasters. it’s a shitehole best avoided that no londoner would visit (obviously if you fit the demographic then fill yer boots)
i would base yourself somewhere on the victoria line as thats the quickest way to get to finsbury park and only minutes from the centre of town. (i was at GF’s today near the emirates and we were in tate britain within 25 mis of leaving the house)
Sadexpunk it was This one.
However it was just the one that slept three that was available for the 2 nights we wanted a few days before. You'll find loads to choose from. Pick your area first. We usually head to that area cos it's just a few stops on the northern line to kings x/st Pancras
