Thinking about driving down from Leeds for a weekend in Bristol mid-feb as we've never been.

Can anyone recommend a decent, convenient place to stay? - £100 per night max really.

Cheers,
Andy

If you don't mind being out of town a bit, the Hilton Double Tree in Bradley Stoke is great.

I'd stay near the harbourside. That'll give you lots of options for walking to places to eat and drink and there is plenty of sight seeing too. Not sure about specific hotels but there are quite a few.

I’d say Bradley Stoke’s a bit far out of town for just a weekend. There are tons of hotels around the town centre. Plenty of concrete monstrosities but you’ll be within walking distance of everything you’ll need for a few days.

Being a resident, of course I never stay in any bit off the top of my head, the Radisson Blu, Bristol Hotel (formerly Jury’s), Mercure and Ibis are all well located. There are also a few Travelodges and Premier Inns - just make sure you’re not having to shlep Too far from the centre to get to them. The YHA is also very well located if you can get a decent room there.

You could do a day easily just wandering around the floating harbour - too many pubs, restaurants to even mention. Mud Dock is nice for Sunday Brunch. Gaol Ferry Steps has little independent retaurants and a Wild Beer craft beer pub.

Public transport is a bit shite which is why you probably want somewhere central so you can do the weekend on foot. You can easily grab a bus up to Clifton though to wander around the bridge. Plenty of little shops around there too although not as good as it once was. Grab a bus up and walk back down would be my advice. Cabot Tower gives amazing views of the city if you’ve a head for heights and don’t mind the walk up.

We went last year. Stopped in Bristol Hotel on harbourside. Might be more than you want to pay but it was a special anniversary!!!
Would suggest staying near the harbour. That's where most of the life of the place seems to be. Inland from there and it's pretty much like any other provincial town.

Some cracking pubs in Stokes Croft but I’m not sure I’d recommend it to the uninitiated. 😀

As above, you need to be central, so can spend the time walking around harbour side, to SS Great Britain etc. (There's more hipster coffee/beer/food places next to MShed now).

+1 for Bristol Hotel if you can get a good rate. Not a looker from the outside but has been refurbed within.

BiL stayed at Premier Inn on Kings St (off Queen's Square) on Saturday - £60 - very good if you don't have a car (which will be £12 per day in the car park nr Mud Dock).

We stick business visitors a little further out, but within 15mins walk of Queen's Square - e.g. Hilton Garden. Very pleasant - might be outside the budget though.

Bus up to Clifton is handy. The Bristol Ferry is great, esp if the weather is good, much better than walking from Temple Meads with all the other people with wheely cases 🙂

Have a look at the Brooks Guest House Hotel short walk to the Docks area & pretty much as central as you can get

I'm a Bristolian who's moved away & have stayed there whenever I go back.

Stick your dates in Trivago, wind the radius back to two miles and pick the one you like the look of (minimum score 8 for somewhere nice, score 9 for somewhere you’ll tell your friends about).

There are plenty of central hotels but you'll pay for parking so your budget isn't huge.

I work next door to the Berkeley Square hotels which have parking (pay extra) and are very convenient for town/harbourside, I believe they are good rooms but often have weddings so might be noisy. If you can get the Radisson Blu or Mercure Brigstowe near Queen Square in your budget they are nice.

There are lots of airbnb apartments immediately north of Cabot Circus (St Paul's). If they don't come with parking, there is limited free parking after 5 pm Friday at the bottom end of Wilson St. Walkable to Volunteer Tavern or Old Market Assembly for nice beer, or Stokes Croft for a more 'vibrant' earthy scene, very convenient if you want to see Banky's.

I would stay in Clifton at an airbnb with parking for your budget. It's nice and leafy, you can walk to the bridge or into town or the harbourside in ~20-30 minutes and there are nice pubs and restaurants in Clifton, Clifton Down to Cotham.

Holiday Inn nr the station - stayed there last month for few nights, easy to get into the main bits of town. Really liked what I saw and would like to return for more social purposes. Nice restaurants - Pata Negra -Spanish, Pho - Vietnamese and Franco Manca - Italian - all on one street. Also SS Great Britain is great!

Kid at uni there so done this a couple of times. Ended up in a pretty poor central Marriott both times for over £150/night. So, er, don't do what we did. Also stayed with friends. It's good for a weekend.

All good places to stay I'm sure but please also consider,
The Bristol Wing

It is run by a good friend of MrsDTs and is great as it supports homeless people.

Yes cosies is still a think, at least it’s still open, does music nights and there may be a fragrant fog hanging in the air as you come down the steps if that is what you mean

I had a trip to hospital after a night in Cosies once. I’d started to wee blood after a night on the double house vodkas 😂

On a sunny day you can't beat walking round the harbour, out on the north side, pint on the grain barge, in to the underfall yard (traditional wooden boatmakers) and back along the south side via the marina, shipmenders, SS grt Britain and the mshed.

Keep an eye on hotels.com, we got a super-cheap deal on Hotel du Vin a little while ago.

It's hard to recommend a hotel when you live in Bristol so never stay in them, but the mercure brigstow is in a good central location, and friends have stayed there before and rated it:-

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186220-d209377-Reviews-Mercure_Bristol_Brigstow_Hotel-Bristol_England.html

Near St Nicholas Market, short walk to the centre and harbourside, very close to some legendary king street pubs (LLandoger Trow, Old Duke etc.).

Already seen a recommendation for the mud dock for food, but it's a restaurant/ bar above a bike shop, with a large balcony overlooking the harbour, so i'd be happy to spend a whole weekend in Bristol right there personally...

Thanks all for the ideas - went for the Mercure Brigstow as it was in budget and got good reviews.
Only downside is I think the parking is a quarter of the cost of the hotel 🙂

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is still on at the M-Shed for about 4 more weeks too. M-Shed is free but the exhibition is £6 (well spent).

I live near Wapping Wharf and wholeheartedly recommend a visit for at least one meal. Box-E is exceptional, Root is great, as is Woky-Ko. Harbour & Browns for good quality bottomless brunch, if that floats your boat.

PS - I wouldn't personally recommend the Mud Dock for food. Nice setting and it used to be the only place of its kind by the water really, but in the last five years the whole harbourside has been transformed all around its perimeter and there are countless places which are nicer.

The last time I was in there, I witnessed a succession of ageing businessmen walking in with attractive young women. I think it's lovely that they were spending time with their nieces.

The Hotel du Vin seemed quite rough around the edges. The "Royal" Marriott is a lot nicer than the "city centre" Marriott. Raddison Blu is well located and modern. Ibis "Bristol Centre" was horrid. Quite a few of my team choose to stay in the Grand, and I've heard good things about "The Bristol", but haven't stayed there myself.

I'd recommend it for a breakfast/ brunch on a sunny day if you can get seated on the balcony, otherwise yes I agree, there's loads of other options 🙂
