Any recommendations?

Nothing tacky or cheesy. No first dance etc. Ideally something simple.
Just want someone to play music for a few hours in the evening.
Based in Kent.

I've no idea where to start. Each one I look up is too much like a disco.

Nothing tacky or cheesy.

Everyone always says this, then after about an hour and a few glasses of liquid bravery, the same people are having a jolly fun time dancing to Abba.

Get a band. A good one that plays soul and Motown etc.

Or... Spotify playlist every guest gets to add one song. Worked really when I saw it.

This. Or both, with a playlist for when the band are not playing.

Isn't this a standard Faceache question on your local 'spotted' group! 🙂

It's not a wedding without a cheesy disco.

I can recommend you a decent string quartet if you're really determined to keep it classy though.

Also, having been to weddings where they used playlists, it's not quite the same.

Neither of us have ever danced and wont be having a first dance.

The playlist idea sounds good.

Playlists are lame it's just not the same. Fine for before/after the band or DJ but that's it.

Funk/soul covers band (a good one) is great but not cheap.

I think everyone's boundaries of what is good music/guilty pleasure/embarrassing shite is different which makes it tricky.

Keeping it fairly funk/soul/Motown oriented is a fairly safe bet for a DJ too IMO to get danceable music people know, without being too cheesy.

Sorry was meant to be playful as opposed to snidey! I do find the idea of never ever dancing weird but horses for courses.

If the guests are predominantly Hells Angels or opera buffs it might be different, but assuming that it's a usual wedding-type age and demographic cross-section, just get a wedding DJ and let them do what they do. A decent one will be pretty good at reading the room.

Shameless plug....I run a wedding band and DJ too.

As above, after a few beverages, quite a few people just want to Dad dance to Spice Girls!

We offer everything, from full funk party band, through to chilled acoustic stuff where there are about 20 guests in total and they just want to sit and watch some music. There's no one right or wrong way of doing things.

Early next year I'm just rocking up with a PA system and lights to a venue and playing a playlist that the bride and groom have supplied. Obviously there's the safety net that I've got Virtual DJ and 1TB of tunes should any requests for generic 'wedding tunes' come in.

Feel free to drop me a PM for some advice etc

It’s not a wedding without a cheesy disco.

There's a whole country to the north that strongly disagrees with this.

On that note. Ceilidh band. Alot of the ceilidh bands that do weddings will also smash out the best of soul etc.

I don't even understand how to get through a day without some dancing

We once had a staff development day where they wanted everyone to dance. I walked out and hid in the toilets for an hour.

I used Piano DJ - Tom was excellent, they surveyed our music tastes before hand and nailed the set on the day.

Went to find a link, they ceased trading due to covid.

Sorry for the unhelpful post.

A band is the best option IMO

On that note. Ceilidh band. Alot of the ceilidh bands that do weddings will also smash out the best of soul etc.

My pal use to play in a ceilidh band that also did prog rock / rock covers.  Comfortably numb played on Bodhran guitar and fiddle was quite something as was psychokiller which was their signature tune

Constructive criticism - Should you be focusing on your own preferences or your guests' enjoyment? Will many guests have similar feelings to contributors here?

Wedding DJ? Just get a normal DJ and pay them 5 times as much?

Sorry, I know this isn't helpful.

I think that's a legit response to that scenario tbh *shudder*

I've been to a Ceilidh in Kent, it was ace 🙂

Admittedly I've been to more in Scotland.

Get some E’s in too then.

That’ll soon rectify that issue

Considered a silent disco? That (and the free bar) was the favourite part for most of our wedding guests. 3 different stations to flick between, plus everyone seems to be more relaxed / less self conscious in their own world with headphones on rather than a band or dj in my experience. Or could be done after the DJ/band when noise is an issue.

I would get a string quartet, 6 music play the Manchester string quartet who do weddings, clearly not local but gives you an idea.

Last wedding I went to there was a singer and guitarist, just the 2, it was fab.

Got to agree. Except down south it would be called a barn dance or country music. Best thing for a wedding and having a good caller will get everyone out.

That's a good back up plan if you cannot find a good country dancing band and caller.

Sorry, I know this isn’t helpful.

And they can crank their over-large amp to 11 so that guests don't have to spend any time at all talking to yelling at relatives that they've barely seen for years, and can instead slump in the seat drunkenly topping up their glass while Dancing Queen makes their ears bleed for the fourth time.

Sorry, not helpful either. (I hate weddings!)

Ceilidh in Scotland works because people broadly speaking know the dances. Ceilidh in England is just a stressful mess.

A good caller can make it just about ok though.

We went whole hog at our wedding to make sure there was music for everyone. Started off with a proper 60's rock and roll band (as in the lead singer/guitarist was a semi-well known 60's rocker), followed up by another band who played excellent covers of everything from the 70's onward and then moved on to the DJs.

One of my friends was tasked with playing a set that would not offend the oldies but would start picking things up for later on and he did a brilliant job at that. By the time the oldies had left we were onto full on rave mode with complaints coming in about the noise from 2.5 miles across the valley. Did help that me and the missus known a dozen or so DJs admittedly.

Didn't finish until 9 the next morning. Was ace. So don't limit yourself to just a DJ - a decent small band to kick things off with works well and then move it up from there 🙂

I can't believe you don't dance at all. Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to your favourite pop song (probably by Queen). Then picture the involuntary movements that your body makes to said piece of music in a rhythmical fashion. That's you taking the first step towards being a dancer.
Unless you stare out of the windscreen, unmoved, stiff as a board ?

I’d happily pay to watch/listen to them! A little bit like Capercaillie when they released a dance-mix sort of version of one of their earlier albums.

Most Scottish and Irish traditional music is dance music anyway - the first time I saw Capercaillie live in Bristol, there was a bloke turned up in full formal Scottish gear, kilt, the works, and he didn’t stop dancing at all, right through the whole gig, it was brilliant!
