I'm computer literate but I know almost nothing about building and hosting a website. I own a handful of web addresses as a precaution but might need to construct a web presence. Where on earth do I start? What is the easiest software to build something simple? Mac or PC ( prefer mac). I've realised I really do know nothing about this subject.
Anyone care to enlighten me?

Easiest option would be to register some space with a hosting company (e.g. GoDaddy or iPage) and get them to associate your domain(s) with the hosting space.

Then install something like Wordpress which has a very good set of documentation (or use something like Deamweaver if you want to get your hands properly dirty) to build your site(s)

Wordpress can be configured, or developed to look good. Check out themes and have a play around. Its pretty easy.

Stw is run off Wordpress. But run by proper web developers in house.

Depends a bit on what you want to do. I you are showing off a lot of pictures to people all round the world you might want a different sort of site to just a simple description page for a local plumbing business. Describe a bit what you want and I'm sure the folks here will come up with some great suggestions.

Wordpress covers a lot of bases though and I usually find it may be worth buying some sort of beginners guide (remember those - paper books) as I often find a well written book way quicker than trying to wade through lots of random advice on the web

This, whats the site for?
I knocked up a fairly basic wordpress as a landing page for my 1 man consultancy work, fairly easy. A lot of stuff runs from web pages so there is no need to "install" software or be platform specific.

It's surprising just how many websites are built with WordPress. A member of my family runs a Web design company and most of their sites are built using it.

I'm currently learning it for an upcoming project.

You should maybe also look at Wix and Weebly if you just want to drag and drop stuff

Wordpress is DEFINITELY the way to go because you can install widgets and add-ons to your website directly within the control panel to make it into whatever you want. Also it's *fairly* easy to make the site work 100% on mobile (but be aware some plugins screw up on mobile and will require trial and error). I've just finished putting this simple site together for a mate http://pedalmonkeycycles.co.uk (content is WIP.) I've made 2 wp websites before so I'm not brand new to it but it probably took about 8 hours from start to finish. Most of the time was ensuring everything worked perfectly on mobile. If you want to know what any of the plugins I used were just message me.

Download Tomcat and learn HTML....

But honestly, Wordpress is easy to use and you can quite literally get a website up and runnng in 5 minutes.

If it's your business, consider investing in someone to build it for you. Even if they just give you a leg up on a Wordpress or Joomla site, it'll save you a bit of bother and get you off on the right foot.

I am barely computer literate yet because it is just click/drag etc (like using word really) I have been able to make this:
www.sconetomongolia.com

Even with embeded videos and a live satellite tracker map!

It costs under a fiver a month on pay as you go hosting too
