Hoping for a bit of singletrack magic and guidance.

We currently have a website which we manage through Wordpress that was set up for us a number of years ago.

We now want to set up another website for a different direction we are heading and it's proving a bit of a minefield.

I need to buy the domain but there loads and loads of sellers.  Any recommendations who to buy from?

Hosting websites...again, recommendations if possible. Will be using Wordpress.org to build the site.  Our current site is hosted by Cloudflare and is really slow!!

Much appreciated cheers all

UK2 are doing ok for our hosting here. Could have bought the domain from them too but I have quite a few that I manage so they've all ended up being on my 123-reg account.

Why not use something like  http://yslow.org/ to see what's making your current site slow - it might not be the hosting....

If you have the know how...I host 2 Wordpress sites using a VPS through Linode.com. Install Ubuntu, set up a LAMP server and then deploy your Wordpress site there using the wizard...can migrate your old database here too if that's a requirement. You'll have full admin access to can tweak as you feel fit without waiting on third party support to do it for you. Costs roughly $10/month and its lightening quick.

For domain names I normally go with namecheap.com

Does your current host allow you to have an addon domain? If so, and you can have 2 MySQL databases, you could run the second site on the same hosting package. A lot do. This would save you having to pay for another hosting package. But if they are slow then time to move on.

Next domains and hosting. That's what I do. PM me for a chat if you want advice. happy to chat for ages and ages, just ask my long suffering wife.

Regarding WordPress. Take a look a the Enfold Framework. Ok, it s a paid for licence (one off fee of about £50) but it makes developing, managing and editing a site so much easier. It's pretty much all we use. Lovely and simple drag and drop functionality as well as many other benefits. Again, more than happy to do a remote session and show you how it works if you are interested. No hard sell, just advice.

Krystal hosting are good. They have some options for Wordpress optimised hosting, seems pretty good value. https://krystal.co.uk/

We had a wordpress based site as well and it was a total nightmare to update.

Don't know about hosting, I've only ever hosted my own hobby sites using a dns server, but I would highly recommend godaddy for domain registration.

Depends how much you want to pay really and how much traffic you get.  I find godaddy just fine for hosting and domains for a few hundred vistors a day.  You can pay a bit extra for daily backups which can be useful if your site gets hacked.  Remember that noone is going to hack your site because it is interesting. The week hack it because you forgot to update it and they have automated tools trying everybody :). Some services provide this automatically

Helpline is usually great. Ive only had one problem they couldn't solve so far

I'm surprised that cloudflare is slow though

Actually, as far as I know cloudflare don't actually provide hosting.  It's a 'caching' service that can make your site faster but it depends a lot on the sort of site.  If the actual site is slow or the hosting is slow then cloudflare might appear slow but the problem is likely to be elsewhere (a

Also, on Godaddy and some other hosting companies you can also schedule automatic updates of Wordpress.  You might find it useful if you don't get around to doing updates yourself.   If you do then remember to also have automatic backups in case it all goes wrong 🙂

Based on recent experience I can highly recommend Squarespace. A nice selection of templates, easy to customise, easy to use, great support and tons of help and advice elsewhere online. Templates, hosting, domain and support all in one tidy package.

I've used WordPress a few times over the years and Squarespace is a doddle in comparison.

I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole, personally.

I've used 123-reg for domain registration for years.

Unfortunately loads of hosts and domain registrars are owned by GoDaddy nowadays, including 123-reg (and TsoHost, WebFusion, Heart, Host Europe etc). It is tricky to avoid them.

Really?  Last I heard, 123-reg were owned by Pipex.  When did that change?
