No, not for those reasons. Although it could turn into an interesting thread.

I've had my mum and dad's laptop with me for a while trying to sort it out for them. Recently they have found the benefit of video calling, being able to see and talk to family especially during this lockdown. They aren't technically minded whatsoever, messenger works easily so that's what they've got and are using on a borrowed tablet.

The issue is the camera on the laptop doesn't work. I suggested getting a webcam that could clip or clamp onto the screen part of the laptop so it wouldn't fall off. My mum has severe ms and unfortunately can only move her head so a freestanding one wouldn't be any good as the laptop would be on her lap so she could see the screen.

Any suggestions for a suitable webcam able to sit on top of the screen on their laptop? They said they are willing to spend up to £50.

Thanks

In classic STW fashion I shall recommend the one I have 😀
We're using a Microsoft Lifecam HD-3000, looks to be about half your budget, but seems to work without issue, as were not trying to show HD quality on zoom or MS Teams. Though it doesn't clip on, more balance, so that maybe an issue.

What's the problem's with the laptop camera? (are the drivers installed for it?)

Exactly what I was going to ask.

What's the OS?

OS is Windows 10 updated from 7 (I think) when the free updates were available from Microsoft. Laptop is an Asus TP550LA and 5 years old. The camera wasn't working so I did a complete reboot of Windows to see if it would help but it didn't, but the laptop works nice and quick now.

According to control panel, it is installed and present. But all it says under camera is USB boot, no brand, model or anything. I was online with Asus support for about an hour the other night while they were trying to figure it out and gave me a different driver to try but no joy. They said windows update should pick up any drivers or updates for it, but the update found nothing. They said they had done as much as possible, but said a webcam might be the only option now. I have a few screenshots on the computer of error messages and what control panel says.

Just give it a go with whatever video conferencing software you're proposing to use.

I've got an ancient Webcam plugged into my PC (it must be about 15 years old!).

In the Windows 10 Camera app it says "We can't find your camera".

But it works absolutely fine using Zoom or Skype.
