If you were innocently browsing a web shop and a conversation window popped up from the shop in question and started talking to you would you view this as helpful service or an intrusion?

"I see you're interested in 12" double ended dildos, could I be of assistance?"
That sort of thing?

Was the popup asking for a date in your area?

I've seen this lately on a couple of mobile phone sites here in Germany. I would hazard a guess that there isn't anyone at the other end when you visit the site, but that if you typed in a query someone would get alerted and you might get to speak to a real person (like the silent caller thing on the phone). Either that or they have some decent AI to field your question, don't know really as I've never typed anything. At any rate fundamentally I doubt it's any different from any other popup.

It's rare enough that it doesn't bother me at all. Unlike in the real shop situation where I hate people coming up and asking if they can help while I'm browsing.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Just another advert. In case you hadn't noticed, the internet is full of em (so is radio and tv!)

I know I know I shoulda read the OP properly. I've never seen this.
Post an example link!

The console that sits on the web owners comp can see whos on the website, how long they have been on and when they last visited. They can then initiate a conversation via a pop up like you have mentioned. There is someone on the other end of the conversation. Live person is an example of one such products that websites use for this.

Regarding the wiggle banner ads its done using cookies. When you visit wiggle a tracking cookie is dropped. The banner ads will only appear on websites that are in the 3rd party's content network. It will be a 3rd party whos displaying these ads on Wiggles behalf and will have hundreds of thousands of sites in the network. Reason for this is click through rates for these targeted banner ads are much higher than standard banner ads.

Its amazing what technology can do now and the tracking on the net. Its all a good thing and keeps me in a job LOL.
