Out for a nice swim today in Filey Bay. Getting out of the water and stood on something very sharp and painful. I thought it was glass but on inspection no cut. Just a tiny little object sticking out of my foot. And then the pain started to build to the point of being unable to walk on the foot. Lifeguard came had had a look. Weaverfish stick. Common in Filey Bay.
They bathed it in hot water and some kind of disinfectant and a dose of anti istMines.
Hurts like a ba5tRd now.
Aye, they smart a bit
[ disclaimer - don’t piss on them - foot held in water as hot as you can bare ]
Them's why I wears me daps in the sea now
Piss on them.
That's for jellyfish stings
Quite common in Wales now. MrsF wears swim shoes in the sea
I got stung in Cornwall. The worst was over fairly quickly. But months later I could still feel it in the first few steps of the morning
pretty potent for uk wildlife. Far worse than my swan attack
Piss on them.
’them’ bring the fish?
the lifeguard?
That’s for jellyfish stings
a myth apparently- only beneficial in the sense that piss is usually warm and heat is helpful
I had to go and pick my son up from his end of exams beach party when he stood on one. Couldn’t believe it; my wife and I have both worked on beaches for a combined 30ish years and we’ve never stood on one or had anyone in our groups stand on one.
First time he goes to the beach with his pals and this happens 🙄😂
He was in pain bless ‘im. The mark is still there weeks later and it itches at night apparently.
With global warming be thankful it wasn’t a Candiru
Hurts like a ba5tRd
yup. Sums up my experience.
Just been down to filey to grab something to eat 🙂 ... sat above the beach at filey brigg country park while we had pizza ... I do love living on this coast 🙂 ... where you staying Ton , or have you headed home ?
I'm only down the road Stumpy👌
Far worse than my swan attack
whoa! You can’t just leave it there. Need more details.

Is there a broken arm involved ?
Far worse than my swan attack
A male swan can break a man's arm with one beat of his wings, but a female swan can break a male swan's heart with just one look........
I stood on one last year in barmouth wales, hurt like a bas**rd! back to the campsite, foot in boiling water and it was ok then.

Sticking your neck out with that one...?
I stood on something when (attempting) to surf in North Wales. It was a sharp pain and I quickly pulled my foot out of the water. Shortly after I heard a "plop" as something dropped off my foot back into the sea. Didn’t see what it was. Whatever it was had gone into my big toe. Not sure it was a weaverfish as the pain wasn't as intense as people describe, more a dull but strong ache. My feet were freezing and I could barely feel them
Anything else it could have been?
Plenty of jellyfish in the N Wales sea at present. Wife, daughter and friends just came back with numerous stings

It varies person to person.
My daughter aged about 9 came out of the sea at Poppit Sands calm as you like saying she'd stood on something that stung her. Went to the Lifeguard, they heated some water and she sat there for ages with her foot in it. No expression of pain at all.
Woolacombe Bay, first day of holiday about 9 or 10. I remember it distinctly, which gives you an inkling of how much it hurt!
Yep, it'll sting a bit that I'm afraid.
Piss on them.
Advice I gave to a chap once in Bossiney Cove and he did. No idea if it works but guessing when in pain anything is worth a go.
Saw a Portuguese man o war near Sunderland a couple of years ago out kayaking ...Thought it was a balloon so went to retrieve it then whoa 😳!!
Hasty retreat was beaten!
It varies person to person.
Maybe it was one then. There was a definite puncture wound on my toe. Perhaps the cold helped and that it was on an extremity
Many many years ago, in fact I was on my school holidays, I think it might have been Freshwater West, and this little kid was showing off this fish they’d caught in a bucket; I recognised it immediately as a weaver fish, the little black fan-like dorsal fin was a giveaway! I told the kid to be very careful with it and not touch it, and to put it back in the water. Not a very big fish, about five or six centimetres long.
Yep, felt that pain, Newquay in 1998 when I was on a lads trip. Absolutely killed and nothing seemed to dull the pain so went to the pub and got smashed while watching the World Cup.
I managed to get stung while at Sennen Beach in Cornwall a couple of years ago. It definitely hurt, but I'd seen other people (and kids) limp screaming out of the sea, so I think it definitely varies from person to person - and fish to fish, probably.
It hurt a _lot_ to walk on. The lifeguard / beach people poured water from a kettle into one of the several plastic pots they had ready for this sort of thing, and I sat there for 20 minutes with my foot in water "as hot as you can bear" while people walking past gave me pitying looks and the guy at the surfboard hire place topped the water up with fresh kettle water from time to time.
It carried on hurting for a few days. @ampthill you make a really good point - a few months later there I noticed there was a pain there for my first few steps every morning but I thought I'd caused myself a new injury, I've only just realised the two were probably related.
Billy big balls here with with his Marine Biology degree on a fishing trip in Portugal.
I clocked it as a weever as soon as the young lad landed it on the deck. I warned him and said I'd deal with it. And of course as predictable as night follows day, the bloody thing got me in the hand. That smarted for a few hours.
Quite common in Wales now. MrsF wears swim shoes in the sea
They've always been there. I suspect that there are more reports of stings because of the increase in people using beaches and spending more time in the water doing activities, and for more of the year.
Yep I've been had a few times, twice in one day once! Grrr.
The OB's description of feeling like you've stepped on glass is an immediate indicator that you've stepped on one. Get the foot in water as hot as you can bear (as others have said) and the pain usually subsides depending on how well they've got you. Bloody ugly looking fish too.

I thought they were into SUP now?
What's SUP?
