Or don't, it's a free world.

But a regular reminder - we're about to enter April and looks like the weather is set fine for a week or so. We're also getting into the part of the year where the sun's rays are strongest - even if air temp is cool skin cancer doesn't care about that and the sun angle and hence strength in April is going to very soon be similar to late August. Some suggestion even stronger because hotter temps cause more heat haze that can dissipate some of the effect.

You can get burnt just the same and the effect on your skin doesn't differ because it isn't 'summer sun' - as someone who has been affected by skin cancer be aware and ok, if you don't trust sunscreen then at least think about other solutions.

Always think of this song when sunscreen advice is offered.

I think it is sensible and now I'm balder, I'll be slapping stuff on daily.

Thanks for posting the friendly reminder.

Yeah, as another baldie who has had skin cancer I never leave the house without a hat on these days. Still occasionally get Solar Keratosis on top of my head and the doc freezes it off.

Is that a real thing? Are there people around who don’t trust sunscreen? Crazy world.

Good shout, I unfortunately got burnt on the back of my arms on Thursday running on the South Downs, lesson learnt the hard way.

it’s not I don’t trust it, but I don’t like it for prolonged periods out in the hills. Sun hoodies and hats win the game for me.

The British Empire was built by proper men who wore nothing more than pith helmets to protect them from the sun.

And long socks with their shorts.

Sunscreen can be really harmful to aquatic life, so I try to avoid putting it all over myself. Sun hoodies and caps are great, and then I can just put a bit on my face.

Each to their own though, main thing is to protect yourself!

I got panda eyes back in Feb from my sunglasses, and I currently look like I've been working abroad for a year.

There are plenty of environmentally considerate and vegan sun creams out there (I have them, just didn't wear them :roll eyes emoji: )

However, I'm after a good daily moisturiser with SPF that soaks in well, isn't harmful and doesn't sting if get it in your eyes... Any suggestions?

at the same risk of the toothpaste rabbit hole...

some- indeed most - ingredients will have been tested on animals in the past. Often by the big companies who now have made data available so others don't have to, under REACH or similar directives, or GRAS (generally recognised as safe) etc., but who are often labelled as the bad guys while others claim 'Not tested on animals' because they specifically didn't do it.

Some ingredients (past or current) have some side effects, from dermatitis type through to some that are suspected hormone disruptors, etc. There's a dilemma for you straight away -

  • cancer kills millions
  • sunscreens are effective at reducing risk
  • some ingredients may have undesirable side effects
  • new ingredients are nigh on impossible to 'invent' because of cost, the need to ensure they're safe (including in some cases animal testing because some legislations still require it / sunscreens considered as OTC pharmaceuticals, etc.)

But that wasn't supposed to be the point which was a simple - sun's getting higher in the sky than many realise cos it's still cold, it'll still burn you, burnt skin (even just once) massively increases your risk, be aware and take whatever measures you're happy with.

I have a fine collection of caps to protect my fivehead, but they do tend to leave the ears exposed so sunscreen of some type is still a thing.

I tend to use a 50spf face cream.  plus I wear upf clothing and hats nearly all summer.

Still come out with a tan rather than looking like a ghost,  but I hate getting burnt

It's easier in the dry heat elsewhere than the UK.

As I work outdoors all year round I wear long sleeve SPF shirts, sunglasses, legionnaire caps and use an array of skin protection from Sun Bum, Green People and Life Jacket. However, I do like to have a tan, and, as I have a physical job that makes me sweat and get SPF in my eyes I don't wear it as often as I should  😣

Dermatologist friend recommends this - not that it's especially better than other creams, but it's cheap enough to use liberally.

I don't often use sunscreen, and cover up well. And I live in the skin cancer capital of the world. But we always carry this for when it's needed. Not sure you can get it outside oz but it's good stuff.

Sun lotion does not require belief in order to work.

What sunscreen for a sun that never sets?

Don’t forget tea. Regular cups of Earl Grey will prevent skin cancer, typhoid, smallpox and bad cat AIDS

Already got my SPF50 and after sun lotions, partly as I'm outdoors whenever I can be but also because I'm a truck driver and it's handy to stick the high protection stuff on my right arm.  Avoids Trucker's tan!

Also having lost my dad to cancer that started as skin but morphed into full-on leukaemia plus my uncle having a skin cancer scare last year I am very aware of how important it is.  I was always pretty good anyway but it's a must-do for me now, no sunscreen would mean no ride/walk now.

Sunscreen can be really harmful to aquatic life

Only if you plan on swimming in open water or the local river - as Weil’s Disease is a real thing, and it’s not unusual for cattle to access rivers to drink, and then piss and shit in it, I would think twice before diving in, sunscreen or not.

And as someone who’s hair grooming involves a shaver with the comb removed, a hat has been essential for years, plus it shades my eyes.

I'm in Norway, the rivers and lakes here are a lot cleaner so I do swim quite a bit. No way I would swim in the UK with all the sewage.

Also do a bit of packrafting and kayaking, I try to stay above the water but it doesn't always go to plan! 😂

I'm definitely not saying to not use sunscreen, I've got a history with cancer so am super careful. I just find wearing decent SPF clothing & hats means I don't have to use so much of it.

Had the tip of my nose removed today 😬 BCC, so they decided it needed to go. So I'm pretty pro sunscreen now. One of the nurses passed out during the procedure, so there I was being operated on, asking if she was OK.

Did the surgeon do that thumb poking out through his fingers gag that Dads have been doing since time began for you? Would that have improved the experience?

Hope that it is successful, fingers crossed for a good outcome.

I have a glow on my face from this weekend. Been camping. Probably wind burn. We had all seasons over Friday and Saturday, then eased off Sunday evening and today.

You must surely know that there are many clean rivers and lochs/lakes in the UK that are not affected by sewage or by cattle shit?

PS wind burn was a joke. Could have been hail, rain !  Definitely sun though, and still easy to get burnt.  My 100w solar panel was outputting around 90w when the clouds disappeared.
