Three fruit trees in our road blew down this weekend, all three snapped at the base of the trunk.
All are 60 years old.
Should fruit trees be pollarded regularly and prevented from getting 'large'? Is 60 years an age where fruit trees get brittle? Is there a current fruit tree disease making their trunks brittle?
I find it hard to believe that these sturdy, not especially tall, trees would be vulnerable to wind unless there was something else wrong.
PS: One's a cherry, no idea what the other two are.
Most trees have a finite life, 60 years is pretty good for a fruit tree.
It's usually a fungal infection if they snap at the base. Have a look round the base and see if there is anything under the bark.
