Combined with a cursory interest in the health of others; I was wondering what people think would be effective means of dealing with the "epidemic"?
Thanks.

4 words. - eat less, move more!
Wait, what, you can catch obesity now? Is it public toilet seats again?
Pedestrianise all town centres, get rid of escalators, make lifts a lot slower than climbing stairs, tax fat in food, make walking mileage pay more than car mileage, and so on. Never ever happen.
Fat camps.
make lifts a lot slower than climbing stairs
I'd be against this as it's a backwards step in technology. Instead, just make the openings really narrow. Although then it kind of sucks for wheelchair and pram users. Just ban fatties from lifts?
Benefits and Tax should be BMI related. Fatter people should receive less benefits or be taxed more if the work.
Come out all you right wing fatty haters!
Fat people are just swell 😆
Don't know how you sort this, many over weight people live in a delusional world, woman being interviewed this morning insisting that all the low fat alternatives were more expensive. Never quite understood why people seem to think all the healthier, i.e. generally less processed options are more expensive. They're not, they're just no so convienient.
Low GI.
Reduced Carb intake.
Get the body to burn fat, as our evolution intended our bodies to do.
How many fatties were there before man cleared the forest, created fields and thus gave birth to Agriculture ?.
I suspect there wasn't one fat human being on the entire planet, 10,000 years ago.
*sighs*
I think the problem may be sufficient volume to fill a fatty requires low cost options to be considered. However, a proper volume of better quality food is probably a good bit cheaper.
I spent a very uncomfortable hour in our local ASDA last night. Pond Life Central would be a better description. Take a look in porkers trollies and the problem becomes fairly apparent. They weren't groaning under the weight of fresh fruit and veg thats for sure.
I know its not that simple, but truthfully not being prepared to call a spade a spade will not resolve it.
Never quite understood why people seem to think all the healthier, i.e. generally less processed options are more expensive.
not seen an Iceland add recently.
... insisting that all the low fat alternatives were more expensive
I've never understood this argument.
If they eat pies because pies are cheaper than apples, then surely less pies would be even cheaper.
Just listening to a bit of Jeremy Vine and what I've come away with is that you can't call fat people fat, I suppose they already know it, and you can fat and still be healthy. Every day's a school day.
all the plump folk I know need eat to much or eat the wrong stuff ...a couple are very active [ manual jobs] and also exercise so I think diet is the real issue.
My solution is to get them all addicted to fags* as apparently it suppresses your appetite , we get more tax off them and they die even younger.
* not the morbidly obese obviously they need amphetamine addiction instead.
Pretty sure there was some research recently that suggested fat but active people (*tick) were less of a health risk than thin but inactive people.
What's the cost of treating obesity and what's the cost of paying pensions to old people ?
Could it be like smoking and alcohol where people dying young are helping the economy.
Just ban fatties from lifts?
Why not just add a weight sensor and sound chip so every time a fatty gets onto a lift it goes "Oooooooooofffffffff"
Never quite understood why people seem to think all the healthier, i.e. generally less processed options are more expensive.
Because it is?
I like to cook. I'm not very good, but I enjoy it. I don't always have the time so will often use (for example) a jar of Dolmio rather than making pasta sauce from scratch. Which is reasonably understandable, some people are lazy of course but some people are genuinely busy.
Thing is, a jar of Ragu will cost, what, a quid, two quid? Even accepting that I've already got a cupboard full of spices, there is no way I can buy a load of tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc for anything approaching the price of a pre-processed jar. So now, not only is making my own food a lot more work, it's a lot more expensive.
Another example, I made cream of tomato soup the other day. I spent hours researching recipes (I like to make my own by combining ideas from a selection of others), honing what I was going to do. Bought all the ingredients; fresh tomatoes, onions, etc. Cooked it all up, it took -hours- to prep and roast and simmer. When I'd finished, I ended up with a really nice soup that tasted almost exactly like Heinz. Now, on the face of it that's a win, I've got all the taste of a commercial product without all the salt and sugar and chemicals and crap, but on the other hand for several hours work and a few quid in ingredients it tastes the same as something I can get for 60p and reheat in under three minutes. Suddenly, it's no wonder we're all eating ready-meals.
Pedestrianise all town centres, get rid of escalators, make lifts a lot slower than climbing stairs...
Or... MAKE STAIRS FUN!
there is no way I can buy a load of tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc for anything approaching the price of a pre-processed jar.
use tinned tomatoes
make more quantity of your sauces/ soup/ meals and freeze it for another day
plan your meals
buy seasonal fresh food - it should be cheaper
.
people are fat because they're lazy in mind and body
.
there were people on the news blaming their fat kids on the cost of food and the fact that food had more fat/ sugar in it.
people need to take ownership of their own lives.

[troll] but the fatties aren't eating ragu and tomato soup, they're eating cake! [/troll]
what we need is a zombie infestation for those who have seen zombieland will know what I mean

I suspect they come out about the same price but with one taking more effort
The issue is more to do with how much folk will spend on crisps and biscuits pies and other hydrogenated fat, sugar and salt filled items but wont pay £1 for some peaches. They will put choccy bars in kids packed lunches when a banana costs the same etc.
Simply put overweight people eat more than they need to or the wrong stuff.... I dont see how this is anyone fault but their own. It may help to promote healthy eating but I would not be that optimistic as fundamentally humans are lazy and like the easy option

I bet that was a nicely balanced discussion, just like all of his 🙄
use tinned tomatoes
It was a random example, but I'd use a combination of tinned and fresh in soup (cos they taste very different).
make more quantity of your sauces/ soup/ meals and freeze it for another day
In fairness, I need to start doing this more.

After all that time, effort and energy all you could make is something almost exactly like Heinz? That's not a win in my book?
😉

Cull and render down for biofuel
According to the BMI 'index' my mate is 'obese', just shy of 6ft and over 15st - he maybe 'well' built, but there is no way anyone would suggest he is obese.
Maybe we need to redefine 'obese' and/or the BMI Index.
cougar FFS this is STW dont give ground 😉
I make tons of sweet potato, butternut squash and lentil soup in season then freeze it. I reckon on about 15-20 large servings for about £2-3 ish
In winter it is other seasonal [root] veg soup tbh I hate it when it become leek and potato though.
Pick the ingredients and you can get buckets of cheap wholesome food.
Maybe we need to redefine 'obese' and/or the BMI Index.
Or just recognise that it is a guide and needs to be interpreted correctly, or understand that your friend is obese according to one definition, or......
There's gonna be a fat epidemic at work this afternoon!
I thought we needed some departmental cake to cheer everyone up seeing as the weather is so rubbish, so I bought some.
Two minutes after I send an e-mail round, an e-mail pops up from one of the marketing blokes whose birthday it is. He has also bought cake.
About a minute after that another marketing bod sends another e-mail with words to the same effect.
We are overrun with cake. Best day at work in ages!!
although food and eating is a big part of the problem, it's not all of it.
I'd love to have more time to exercise, I do what I can crammed into a busy life, but there are often 2 or more days a week when because of work I don't have time.
Government can't expect people working 50 hour office weeks, commutes, with kids and other commitments, to be as active as desirable.
We need to reduce the long hours culture in this country.
One arm of the answer must be education: educating parents about not teaching bad eating habits (giving children food to keep them quiet/get rid of them), and not giving inappropriate food (kebabs, maccies etc) as a regular staple in their diet. Thing is, maccies etc tastes good, is cheap, is quick and easy and is fashionable.
Another must be exercise, and I mean partly more sport but partly integrating exercise into one's life, so, walk to school/work, or walk to the bus stop/station or cycle. Walk the dog. Walk round to your mate's house. Thing is, I ride to work, people ask me how far it is. I say 12 miles. They say "Oh I couldn't do that" - of course they could! There seems to be a perception that only fit people can exercise (so how did I get fit in the first place then?).
I know three men who, in their youths, cut corn by hand with sickles/scythes, thrashed it by hand, stooked it up by hand, loaded it onto a cart (drawn by a horse). If they wanted meat they killed a pig (and ate/used all of it). They walked to school or sometimes got a lift on a cart. Women washed clothes by hand. This is within a single lifetime. We have gone from doing a great deal of physical work, to very little in one lifetime.
I'm not suggesting we could or should go back to that, but we really do need to get back into the mindset of doing work.
Another reason I love London. No fatties.
pippin how do other countries manage it then?
what we need is a zombie infestation for those who have seen zombieland will know what I mean
😀
There are other unwanted side effects though. Like no more Bill Murray.
pippin how do other countries manage it then?
Manage what? Not being obese? I can tell you that a country like Spain is warming to the idea of obesity and you are now starting to see a higher level of obesity than before, this is all in the last ten years.
A few more years and there will be a significant problem there too.
I've never been convinced that fat people have anything to apologize for. We all make life choices that may increase risks to our health.
I did notice the guy on BBC news from the Obesity Forum was a bit hefty - which suggest that if someone employed to promote education regarding obesity is a biffer, there's no hope for the campaign. And of course our MPs are hardly setting a great example. A contributory problem is that the food advisory bodies are lobbied too viciously by the food producers who have no interest in seeing us eat fewer processed carbs and sugar.

So what does this tell us ?.

A major part of the problem, perfectly outlined.
😉

Really, I'm sure if people would buy it the supermarkets would stock high GI, low carb, low fat low calorie ready meals, but people want tasty s*** and kerry katonas prawn ring.
Me? My BMI's 29.something and I'm a long way from 'fat', although I aim to get it back under 25 just to make climbing hills less painfull!
So what does this tell us ?.
That people take the easy option and marketing works.
Surely the current definition of "overweight" or "obese" is an arbitrary limit, with no clinical evidence...
Really, I'm sure if people would buy it the supermarkets would stock high GI, low carb, low fat low calorie ready meals, but people want tasty s***
Market forces are not the safety net for the nation's dietary choices.
We have, as do other species, the sugar lover within us.
A circuit that responds favourably to sweet, salty foods.
The Manufs and producers know this and exploit it to their advantage.
Its not personal, its Busniess.
😉
and kerry katonas prawn ring.
I am both hungry and aroused.....and a little confused.
i smell something fishy
the Obesity Forum
Where abouts is this, third left after the Bike Forum? I must find it!
I think the long working hours is definitely a major factor in the problem... giving people less time to exercise and think about their meals. Some people find solutions as demonstrated on this thread, but it is easier to load the shopping basket in the ready meal isle.
Spoony... unless you're stacked like Mariusz Pudzianowski... a BMI of 29 means you're overweight.
That people take the easy option and marketing works.
Yes.
Large companies who employ some very [s]cunning[/s] clever people.
Are out to own us through our inbuilt love of salt and sugar.
And they want to increase our need/want of it.
Its part of their business plan..... to grow, as the customers do.
Literally.
This combined with tech that allows/makes us sit for too long in a day then brings us to what we are seeing today in countries such as ours, Spain, Italy.
My BMI's 29.something and I'm a long way from 'fat', although I aim to get it back under 25 just to make climbing hills less painfull!
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
tax fat [in food]
Good idea
fat in food isn't the problem
i smell something fishy

Thats your wild alaskan salmon with spinach, basil, cherry toms and chick peas for lunch.
Dressed with a walnut oil, lime juice, cumin, cayenne pepper drizzle.
😉
fat in food isn't the problem

Beat me to it !.
😉
EDIT:
Sugar Tax ?....
Sugar Tax ?....
**** no!
[s]****[/s] Wonderful idea, no?
FTFY
😉
Close Asda's
Controversial Non?
FTFY.

No mate, I've fixed that for you.
😉
I'm sure I am a muppet occasionally, but can the tagger explain why in the context of this thread? Have I said something to put you off your chips?
Tags !, Damn !, I always forget to look at those.
I'm guessing the person who resorted to the childish muppett tag isn't able to share their thoughts with us, coherently.
I blame the drugs.
I blame the drugs.
Not sugar? 8)
Tag is gone 😳
If they were clever they'd have used iMuppet 🙂
Back to the matter in hand... would better Home Economics lessons in school help... preparing youngsters with an understanding that with a bit of organisation they can eat healthily (and tastily)?
I blame the drugs.
Not sugar

Similar effect, no ?.
Tag is gone
Yeah, that report post button does have a use after all.
😉
But look at me...I never thought for a second that I'd end up with a BMI of 33.7...yet here I am. I'm trying but it's bloody difficult 🙁
Back to the matter in hand... would better Home Economics lessons in school help... preparing youngsters with an understanding that with a bit of organisation they can eat healthily (and tastily)?

I think this is the field Jamie O has been standing/fighting in.
My guess would be this would have a limited effect.
Motivation is the key.
ime, people achieve the most for themselves when they really want something.
Darcy - if you'd come and met me yesterday... I wouldn't need to ask this... are you genuinely a little overweight, honestly now?
(I'm not really a lithe 22yr old female if it helps)
bloody difficult
Cheer up chubby.
It aint difficult at all.
You weren't born to eat loads of the wrong things.
You've done that all by yourself, with the help of naughty companies that produce stuff they then tell you to eat....
So you can undo it.
🙂
Wheel builders.
You've got to love'em.
Amazing !
Back to the matter in hand... would better Home Economics lessons in school help... preparing youngsters with an understanding that with a bit of organisation they can eat healthily (and tastily)?
I don't think it's really an issue of explaining to people. People know, it's just not something of much interest.
Much like being told at school if you do 4 hours of homework each evening, you'll probably achieve a better life than if you don't.
There's a down tube in there? 😯
a little overweight
I wish!
Ian - how do we go about making it of interest? I think some of the tv (freak) shows actually help.
I also think that shows like the Gok Wan one where he gets the overweight out of there clothes and tells them they're beautiful are ridiculous... it seems like they're trying to normalise and make obesity palatable to society.
Ban TV remotes.
