I've sold 2 cars with them
IF yiu are truthful with your description of the car, they will give you the agreed price
IF you turn up and it's got scratches and damage you've not declared they will reduce the price
Fair enough really

I got the price. they tried to bat me down on paint chips and I just said I would walk and then he said OK.

It was actually a very good price as I saw it in a dealer a few weeks later for £800 more so WBAC and the dealer didn't have a great deal of margin in it really.

Could not see any way to give them more info but guess that's comes after I make an appointment.
It is 11 years old and has hedge rash after a life in the country.

After you've got yiur price there is an extra box that lets you add any damage, scratches etc

I sold my Focus through them. Gave me the price they said minus a bit for some damage that I hadn't spotted but even then the reduction was fair given what they pointed out.

I see it as risk transfer. I get a little less than I would on a private sale but once the car's gone that is it. You're not going to have some pissed off punter call you up because the cam belt has gone as they drove it home.

Slightly different situation, but when I got rid of my first car I got more from a scrap firm...without the hassle of being battered down - just a bit of cash and some paper work to sign.

It's got a fresh mot as of today so not somthing to scrap , they gave a £1100 valuation
It just the lack of tyre kickers that's appealing to me but it's not cosmetically perfect

Valued my Astra Van at £450. Later sold it for £1000 which seemed to be the going rate for ones that age and condition. I've heard a lot of anecdotal stories of them being rude and shite to deal with bit no first hand experience.

In my case they offered a decent price, but then examined the paintwork with a microscope and knocked off so much off the price I walked away. Perhaps if they don't really want fhe car, they just take the mick.

I have used them twice, you will not get top money for your car but they are good if you are looking to shift a car quickly with minimal hassle. In and out in 20 mins and they even call you a taxi.

The catch is you need to list all the issues with the car when you a web valuation, otherwise they take money off for each one when you get there.

A mate just sold a car to them. He detailed every last scratch etc and there was one case where a "short scratch" he'd described was categorised as a "long scratch" upon inspection. Mate said that the decision was made by the computer when all the inspection details were entered. He took their offer which was very close to the initial quotation given in advance.

This.

Took my car down there on the w'end. Offered 1k on the net and we were down to £450 before the bloke had even gone outside to to see the car! At that point I walked. Total waste of time IMO.

We just got rid of our two old cars and chose not to use WBAC..

In both cases WBAC offered pretty low initial valuations simply off a Reg' plate search, less than 25% of what we got...

Stuck each one up on Gumtree and both went within a week, in both cases to the first to come and view...

They've got to make their margin I suppose but a quick spruce and five minute photographing/posting on Gumtree, plus a little bit of waiting, netted me a fair chunk more cash for not much more effort than using WBAC...

I'd recommend you Search Autotrader/Motors.co.uk/Gumtree/ebay for other examples of the car ideally around the same age/mileage/condition, just to get a feel for the actual "Market value" then see what WBAC offer you...

My brother sold or nearly sold a van through them, it went exactly as expected, they tried to knock huge amounts of cash off for irrelevances. It had a smashed in bumper, absolutely destroyed so he declared the main damage, they spotted a scratch elsewhere on the bumper and wanted IIRC £50 off the price for that. So he told them to piss off and the guy went mental and started shouting and screaming about timewasters.

For my own car they offered less than the scrap value, I got something like 5 times more on ebay.

WBAC seem to offer generally low prices. The Car People have got their own version of WBAC, can't remember its name though. We sold our BMW through them last year and they were offering over a grand more than WBAC - significant when it was worth £7kish. They knocked me down on a few bits as expected but still got what I thought was a fair price considering there was no hassle with private buyers etc

Do you have an Evans Halshaw near you? They claim to beat WBAC on price as they cut out any middle men.

Might be worth a try.

They offered me £1,700 for my old Alfa that I ended up selling for £3,250.

I can see the convenience in using them but be sure you know the going market rate for your vehicle and be prepared to walk away if they offer you peanuts.

They bang you down hard for ANY cosmetic damage, but have no idea mechanically, as long as it drives. My old audi had a knackered heater matrix, which they didn't spot. It needed a fortune to fix, but they were far more bothered about a paint chip.

Depends on age of car, but I got more from a dealer off my newer car, old car was 4 years old and its now on the dealers forecourt. I was offer £3750 from wbac got £4250 from dealer. Depends if your getting a newer car at the same time, just play one off against the other to get a better deal.

For a trade-in they'll just play with the numbers. Add some more to the trade-on value, reduce the discount they'll take on the new motor.

Did you check if the dealer would have given you a better deal on the new car if you paid cash?

The dealer can give you any nominal value for your old car as long as the total deal is there. The headline price may have been lower with cash.

WBAC offered me £750 for a 2006 Citroen C4 with 92k on the clock.

The BWM dealer I got my Ford Kuga from paid £900. Probably less than the market value but (a) more than WBAC, (b) quick & easy and (c) the Kuga was about £2k less than "book" price

We sold my wife's 6 year old Merc privately for approx £1000 more than WBAC offered us pre any inspection.

IMHO not worth using unless you have a banger to shift.

Most likely case is that they punt a lot of cars through auctions so appearance is everything.

I got rid of my S-Max through them, only dropped a couple of hundred quid off an already reasonably high valuation. I had been offered £8-8.5k as a part-ex through a dealer, WBAC gave me just over £9.5k. The chap I dealt with was pleasant and I'd be quite happy to try it again.

squirrelking - WBAC is owned by BCA so I'd guess 99% of them go through the auctions..

I once worked for there parent company CC Automotive Also known as Car Craft.

They pay the bottom price and will find anyway to knock the price down.

They cash in the tax thats on the car (if you got 12 months at £400 and still have 6 months left they make another £200, thats not included in the value)
But turn up without it they will again knock the price down. (but that will soon stop with the new tax system)

the cars are sent to auctions or sold at a carcraft site

Edit as said else where it was purchased by BCA in 2013, so my dealings are only valid before that point

What is a 'fair' price?

They offer you below trade in book value?

Is that fair? Some dealers even say now 'whats WBAC's offer price? We'll value your PX at that'. **** off!

My 3 year old Yeti'll be up for sale in a month or so when the new one arrives. Checking out AT, seems to be loads on there but they sell. Never thought of gumtree or Face-cloth. Have to investigate those. WBAC gave me an internet valuation quite close to private, but even tho the cars is v. good condition, it's had bikes/children/dogs inside and has a few scratches.

Think I'll sell it privately based on reading the above.

EBay's a lottery though, I bought my current car on ebay for £2850. the guy who sold it to me had turned down £2700 from WBAC.

Not when I used them they didn't. They gave me the tax disc back and the form to fill in to get a refund from DVLA.

WBAC was fine for me. Declared quite a few little bits of damage, half of which they decided wasn't as bad as I'd said (although it was raining quite hard that day) so I actually got more than original valuation. Paid via bank transfer, zero hassle.

Autotrader charge £37 minimum for cars over £1000 now and I just didn't have the time or inclination to deal with a private sale. Was happy to lose out on a few hundred potentially to get rid as my new (lease) car had already arrived.

Most people have a highly inflated idea of what their car is worth, and tend to trade in where a dealer can hide the true value of the p/x in the deal. Even if they don't, the person is usually so excited about their new car they can easily forget about what they lost on the old one.
