I'm sure I'm not the only one to habitually lose the red tubes fron a can of WD40 or GT84. Is there a good way to keep hold of them, apart from not being an utter nitwit?
Coil it up inside the lid when not in use.
Is GT84 some trendy hipster retro version?

Yeah, it's similar to GT85 but you need a large beard to use it 🙂
Elastic band around the can, slip the pipe in that
Piece of electrical tape on the can peel up when you want the straw.
Use JL69 - the tube doesn't come off 🙂
I keep all that stuff in a plywood box on the wall. I've drilled some holes to keep the tubes in. I've got loads, if you're anywhere near south Shropshire you're welcome to grab one!

Alternatively if you get one of these WD39 😉 cans, the tube is permanently attached, you just rotate it down if you want a spray.

Cut them in half. Tape one half to the can for when you lose the first one.

that's not a bad idea -you only usually needs short straw so I could cut it into 10!!
I always have more straws than cans, chuck the old straw in the bits box when the can runs out, always loads of spares
Electrical tape is the easy answer - it’s what I do - but I am really impressed with @blokeuptheroad

Thing is, I lose the straw after about a week so there's never one to chuck in the parts bin 🙁
blokeuptheroad is more organised than any human should be!
It’s only a matter of time before we have to try to cope with spraying lube through a paper straw
I cut them into about 30mm sections. Less likely to fall out when you knock them on stuff too

😂 Mrs Bloke would beg to differ!
These...

Not used one of those since I sold my BSA 650 twin! Its all fly by wire throttle and hydraulic clutch these days!
The wd40 popup straw cans are awesome tbh. The silicon spray one is an ideal bike product for doing fork seals etc without spraying it everywhere, same for most of the greases, and the fast penetrant one is actually a pretty decent penetratng oil.
You can buy replacement straws btw. They're absurddly expensive of course. What I need is some sort of electric shock therapy, because if I find an aerosol straw, I'll never ever thing "I'll put that somewhere sensible", generally I throw it in the corner or in the bin. If I just had a place for 'em there'd be 50 in there.
Daft question but why are you removing the straw once it has been pushed into the can head? Just leave it there...obviously your issue if you are incapable of holding or grabbing the can and not knocking the straw out.
A few tidy solutions but just leave it in the spray head and all sorted.
Or have I been doing it all wrong for these decades?

If you want to spray a panel then yes, the straw is only if you want a narrow jet of WD40 🙂

My GSX ain't.
I always do my gear cable with them on the mtb, but it is a faff. I always have to try and make the seal better with a rag, and yeah, often the straw won't go in properly.
There should be a mountain bike one.
Why wouldn't you want a narrow spray of the stuff? If goes everywhere if you don't use the straw...is this why disc covers are a thing?
Sometimes, you want it to go everywhere. Or you don't really have room for the straw.
Why are people using WD40 for cables though?
Watched a hack vid on you tube the other night and in it was an idea for storing the red tube.
Nips off to find it.....

That's what I thought I was doing but just out in the garage and the red straw has just disappeared. Maybe I accidentally knocked it off and it was stolen by mice 🙁
Best bet is to tuck the red straw behind your ear (summer) or under your hat (winter) and then it's always to hand next time you need it.
The WD40 cans with the swivel head are the mutts. I seldom need a wide spray, and being able to close off the spray like that is a lot less faff than the plastic cap that often ends up splitting, getting thrown away, then the can gets knocked over and the spray head broken or lost.
Umm, I why hasn't anyone mentioned that it clips into the two slots on the cap? you can then remove the cap, insert the straw with the cap hanging off it...
(not my image:)

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Why wouldn’t you want a narrow spray of the stuff?
WD40 not just for bikes shocker 🙂 The swivel head cans have a wide spray when the straw is not raised, that's a lot of effort in design if no one was going to use it.
Colin Furze treated the walls in his bunker and tunnel with WD40, Imagine doing that with the straw. (Just thought...he must have loads of spare straws!)
