Just back from seeing the second ankle specialist to discuss the future and how best to treat the ankle.

A quick history.

September 2012 - WCA snaps his foot off (pics on other threads). Consultant says he is expecting amputation before the operation.

September 2012 - Consultant puts it into the correct place and holds it there with 4 big screws. So his pre-operation assessment was wrong (in a good way)

October 2012 - Consultant pleased to see that the foot seems to still be there but explains there is still a 70% chance of amputation

December 2012 - Consultant is pleasantly surprised with the ankle and says it is almost certain to stay on and they will just fuse it. So his last assessment was wrong but in a good way.

January 2013 - First appointment is a waste of time as the consultants had all been off on holiday for Christmas but was promised appointments at the end of the month with the specialists who would tell me how they are going to fuse the ankle.

Today - Saw the second specialist (saw the first on Tuesday but they both said the same thing) and he reckons the ankle just needs a bit of physio and doesn't want to fuse it. So the consultant who operatied on it and said it needed fusing was wrong but in a good way.

Summary
I keep my foot, they are not fusing the ankle, I just need physio

Woot and indeed Woot!

That is fantactic news!

However, you were going to keep the amputated foot and, IIRC, hollow it out and use it as a desk tidy or something. Well, that's your plans buggered right up now! 😉

Diane - that was my first thought! What if they'd lopped it off months ago when there was no need!

Awesome result. Congrats WCA.

Good news.

You'd be hopping mad if they'd done it the other way and realised too late it could have been fixed.

Good old NHS for trying anyway to see how the patient responds to treatment.

Made up for you WCA! 😀

I've genuinely been in your position myself when i dislocated my ankle. I've only got one pin not four like you though!

The physio can be frustrating but ten years down the line I play hockey 2/3 times a week, MTB as much as i can and have run a half marathon.

Thanks for the kind words. It was both the NHS and private who were predicting the worst BTW

Still waiting on MR scan for final judgement but hope to be back on full weight bearing in he next week or so.

Great news! Hope all goes well.
Back in 97 broke my ankle in 3 places while biking. General consensus was to fuse as considered too badly damaged to repair, but saved at eleventh hour by young whizz kid surgeon who agreed to have a go. Lots of metalwork, physio etc and 15 years on still works a treat. Lost about 10 deg. forward flex and aches a bit but very grateful that young surgeon was on duty at the right time.

Great news, however not wanting to sound too negative... but I would be a bit worried about so many conflicting treatment plans!

Not to worry anyone, but I have heard of consultants who will not do an op, because they dont have the relevant skills, and will do inferior (less complicated ops) or not operate at all which means the patient doesnt get the best outcome.

I guess if they were considering chopping your leg off you must have been in a main teaching hospital, so in theory the better surgeons anyhow.

Funckydunc - not negative, sensible. The Dr who did the initial op was a knee specialist but was very happy with the outcome. Admitted that he wasn't sure how to proceed so recommended an ankle specialist. I also saw a second ankle specialist. One was NHS and one private.

The two ankle specialists actually agreed!!!

How could they all have got it so wrong?

It's cos medicine is a very inexact business - everyone behaves very differently. Give the docs some credit.

And yes, please stay the *** away from ladders. STW can't take any more of this.

Now, please, try to effect no more significant damage upon yourself. Go on, try, if only for 6 months 🙂

They didn't really though did they as WCA explained, they said it could lead to amputation but operated. The ankle speacilists were fine with this and now he's on the road to recovery.

I have heard of consultants who will not do an op, because they dont have the relevant skills,

..... or don't want to risk an op not having a good outcome thus affecting their reputation.
This is from two consultants I know both of whom DO carry out the tricky stuff.

Great news WCA.

And I would rather a Dr outlined the worst case scenario, as any other outcome is a win.

I might be a pessimist, but that means I regularly have pleasant surprises 😉

Fabulous news WCA! Hope the physio goes well, sure you'll be back to your best in no time! 😀

The way you've stayed so positive throughout (at least when you've posted on here) is a real inspiration. Proves we should never give up hope either!

Great news!

What I found with my hip was that my consultant always wanted to give me the absolute worst case scenario in advance. Which is fair enough, because if he'd given me the best or mid scenarios then it'd gone worse I'd have been pretty displeased whereas beating the worst case feels good. It's only really a problem if they insist on sticking with the pessimist's course of action. Or if you top yourself or self-amputate in the shed or something 😉
