I'm looking for a waterproof, breathable jacket for walking rather than riding. Hood needn't be concealed in the collar. Relaxed fit and not too short style. No insulation but room for layers (could include zip-out fleece)

Moderate waterproof and breathability numbers 10-15000 mm and 10-15000g/m^ should be adequate

Moderate budget c£150 but this could be amended

Suggestions please

I went through this process recently when my appkit jacket failed after a very short time, Ended up buying the Decathlon / Simond mountaineering jacker;

As Johnny Dangerously once said  ‘it’s deja vu all over again’.

Have a  look at the Keela Saxon for a decent UK made jacket on a sensible budget.  They have chunkier options as well and are very well liked in the Scottish outdoor community for being tough and well made.

Add in the detailing of living wage, repairability at the factory and direct sales and they're a strong option.

You should get a Patagonia Torrentshell 3l under budget. My son has just got one and immediately did a weekend hiking in the Brecon Beacons in the last named storm and stayed nice and dry. Too early to tell how durable it is though.

Millions of jackets available.  Go to a big shop and try them on, get the one that fits well.

You'll be looking at one of the big name brands' own 3L membrane for around that price - rather than the more expensive (and generally better) Gore-Tex Pro or whatever.

Depends what you want to do with it - general purpose, dog walking robust, breathable and practical i use a Fjall Raven jacket made with G1000 material, not fully waterproof and you need to wax it now and again - im a big chap and really only comfy enough outdoor jacket I found that can put up with abuse, mud, thorns, plenty pockets etc - not cheap mind you

For which you pay a huge brand premium!

I just picked up one of these  from the Inov8 shop in Bakewell. It was down to £80 but now back up to £100. I've only worn it a couple of times so far and only light showery, blustery weather. Good hood (actually goes over an MTB helmet). Seems quite good so far for moderate conditions.

Wot Yak said.

I've just bought a Patagonia Torrent shell 3(Countryside Ski & Climb, £123). Mainly as I wanted something that would pack down. The torrent shell packs up into it's lefthand pocket (and would compress down some more to be fair). Only two pockets (both big enough to take an OS map), hood kinda rolls up and secures to the hanging loop with a wee hook. It hoofed it down this morning, and it didn't leak a drop. HTH.

Are the latest Patagonia proprietary membranes any good?

About 10years ago I had 2.5L H2No - it performed like a tea bag in the rain

molgrips +1

Found a bargainous Craghoppers jacket in a real shop. Walked out with the fleece that I used for size-testing too (yes, I paid for both 🙂 )

Popped into Go Outdoors and they price-matched a pair of boots with Amazon (of all places)

Shopping in shops, WTH?

Thanks all

I've been eyeing one up in the Patagonia sale. It's the jacket I *should* get and at £126 it feels like a bargain if it does what it says it does plus all the Patagonia goodness.

The Gore Pro jacket got a good review here

https://outdoorsmagic.com/article/adidas-terrex-techrock-gore-tex-pro-jacket-review/

Adidas Terrex kit is widely seen on the hills in Europe, it's decent kit but I doubt anybody would ever pay full price for it.

Adidas used to own Salomon and after they bought them all of their Terrex range vastly improved as they shared tech fabrics, designers etc. I think Salomon are independent again now.
