The same cut-down goretex military surplus overtrews that people use for MTB.

Utterly pointless, most folk that walk in the great outdoors would say the same.

You end up with soaking wet feet.

Wear shorts, if it's pissing, lightweight waterproof trousers is the logical next step.

Not really. They stop your crotch getting wet, but without the unpleasant personal sauna you experience with a lot of full waterproof trousers. You and 'most folks that walk in the great outdoors' can feel free to disagree, but that's my personal experience. I used some Endura eVent 3/4s for walking for a while. These days I mostly use fast-drying soft shell shorts though.

I was going to suggest the Kamleikas too

I have a pair of GoreTex running shorts - they roll up tiny, so easier to carry. They're easy to put on over boots and make sitting on wet grass more tolerable, plus they don't feel as sweaty as full-length trousers.

I pretty much always walk in shorts and stick waterproof baggy shorts over my normal walking shorts if its rainng hard enough. Very rarely wear trousers of any form unless its seriously cold.

Those would be the same ones you see walking in around in massive walking boots on a path you could rollerskate on. They'll also have a map case hanging around their neck in the centre of Keswick.

Lol, aye, true FF, but from the word go they've got everyone telling them they need boots, and they need to go to a shop to get fitted! 🤣

Goretex running shorts sound awful!

I don't mind wet feet when running, but try and avoid it walking particularly in colder weather.

Try revolution race, they seem to do a huge range of kit, and always discount codes kicking about.

The Kamleikas have a really soft fabric and do the job of moving water away from your crotch which in turns helps to manage friction of the Baws.

Waterproof trousers for running, for me, almost all year round are genuinely awful. It’s only really in proper upland winter conditions they’d be a preferred option. A marginally bigger window for full leg cover when walking but not by all that much.

To be fair the street layout in Keswick is not the simplest 😉

Finding wet shorts pretty uncomfortable

Funnily enough I was musing on this the other day and wondering where all of the *proper* walking coats have gone - the ones that reach down to just above your knees to keep your shorts dry (and have a proper map pocket in the front… and have pit zips for ventilation… and are waterproof…)

The modern equivalent seems to be an inadequate jacket and a “rain kilt”… which seems faintly ridiculous.

Lined shorts ftw, keep the lads snuggled in tight. Agree re trousers, I'd never run in them.

Think OP is walking though, not running.

Ive grown to hate lined shorts with a passion. Multiple brands and price points tried and they’ve all been shite. Hideously uncomfortable chafe fests.

The only thing that works for me is X Bionic kit, and yes, I’m very poor as a result. £80 pair of pants arriving today, they’ve literally got me by the balls.

What happened when I tried this route is that water just migrated up the shorts. Might work differently with walking and not quite as much range of movement than fell running.

By lined I mean lycra type inners that extend down beyond the bottom of the shorts, zero chafage.

My shorts of choice are a tenner in Primark, and last ages, managed 40 miles in them no issues.

Yes, that’s the type I hate, genuinely awful. Maximum chafing.

Not tried the Primark options tbf. Ronhill and Salomon are currently in the house, the Ronhills are in really good condition, you can have those for an RNLI donation if that style works for you. Probably size large.

This is likely a case of “different shapes and sizes” so let’s not go there eh!

Another one who doesn't see the point in waterproof shorts here.

I don't mind spending on decent kit but it what is it that they do exactly? I read their blurb and I'm none the wiser - it all seems a bit pseudo-sciencey tbh.

Oh that’s simple @grum

They fit without chafing for all day, on occasion multi day runs. Picked my first pair up as a spontaneous purchase in store. Never found anything else that comes close for comfort.

I haven’t actually read any of the marketing blurb to know what they’re saying. I’ll go take a look but imagine it’s a load of old tosh.

Edit, yes by Jove, there’s a lot of old ****y crap spouted on that website.

Fair enough!

Do you find that you can feel the difference in the highly effective density, the intensive functional transmission and the precisely defined functional zones? I like the idea of the 3D Bionic Sphere® System, if only because I find spheres are best when they are 3D. 😛

just buy a cheap pair of over trousers and cut the bottom legs off. If it rains put them on, if not take them off.

If it’s chafing you want to stop I’d ignore the shorts and buy some good running boxers and/ some Lycra shorts for under your baggies.

I did a 40 mile ultra in the pouring rain in a pair of cheap Decathlon running boxers and have zero chafing. Well, I did have chafing, just not down there, my nipples were a right state!

That's basically the conclusion I'd arrived at @lunge

Although have waded through the fairly epic bullshit of the X Bionic website it transpires I've been using shorts as underwear.  I'll dive into Decathlon on Monday see if they have any of those, not a brand I've tried yet.

Fwiw I wear the cheap decathlon boxers below lined shorts, never had any chafing.

These are what I have, I’ve never felt the need to spend more as for £5 they keep everything in check and don’t chafe.

I've got a few pieces of X-Bionic stuff, from shorts to full tights for when I'm running or fast and light in the hills - Sportspursuit don't appear to offer any discount sales anymore though. For summer wear, I never see the need for anything longer than 3/4 on the legs - that's where the waterproof shorts come in as they keep my thighs dry. Admittedly, I did wear full-length overtrousers in the winter when the snow was chest-deep!
