Hi,

I normally have whatever Moto G is available at the time but I'm wondering if I should consider a waterproof phone.

Has anyone got one? Most seem to be £££££ and I was thinking £200.

You can buy a used but good condition Samsung Galaxy S9 for under £200, and they're IP68 rated.

I have a Pixel 2XL. Not sure what it's rated to, but I've had it a couple of years and carry it while bike commuting and it's still going strong. It's running well enough that I'm not bothering to upgrade yet.

They're £200 on Laptops Direct: https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/grade-c-google-pixel-2-xl-black-white-5-64gb-4g-unlocked-sim-free-a3-g011c-64xlwht/version.asp

I'm still on a Ulefone Armor 2. They're up to version 9 now and there are a few derivatives to satisfy different needs and budgets.

Ulefone armor 7 here.

Robust and waterproof

Not a great spec phone but I can forgive that for being robust and waterproof

Loads of phones are waterproof. I took underwater videos with my S9 when it was new three years ago.

Very useful for cyclists. I put my phone in my jersey back pocket or running belt without having to worry about water. Ok so it's got a case to protect against dirt but doesn't need a waterproof case.

I was thinking of upgrading my ancient and definitely not waterproof Galaxy S6 to an S9. Has anyone any real life experience of them? Are they actually waterproof? I like to take photos when I am paddle boarding so it should be ideal if it is waterproof.

EDIT - Molgrips answered my question whilst I was still typing it. Thank you.

They're waterproof until the day they're not, then it's kaput.

Ulephone Armor X5 here.

Can't fault it as a phone and it's been in the washing machine at least twice.

Had an S4 active, S8, S8+ and now S10+. The latter were definitely waterproof, worked under water, not just the rain. Bought the 2 + models reconditioned for a fraction of the latest version. EBay and the latest through Meelie mobile. The S8 swelled up, battery I think, after 2 years which obviously screwed the waterproofing. The S8+ lasted over a year but I threw it across the drive last Wednesday which really sugared it. Ordered the S10+ Wednesday evening, got it Friday, no charger, box etc. but spotless and battery seems good. One thing which is good about Samsung's is you out them next to each other and they transfer nearly everything, apps, settings, pictures, music, blue tooth linked devices. Had to reset up a few things like banking apps but so much easier than starting from scratch.

Edit, the S10+ now has a case, first phone I've managed to smash in 30 years.

The edge Samsungs are a bit fragile. I'd always recommend getting the non Edge version of whichever one you want...

I inspect railway bridges over river, mountain stream etc. I have dropped many phones into water and on one occasion i had to sprint after it as the flow just dragged its along a concrete invert until it fell into a half metre deep scour hole.

I would reccommend... any phone*. Every single time I have put my hand in and taken it out and continued taking photos and writing notes on them. I do have a case on it but only a normal impact case (screen open)

*preferrably non removable battery so its glued shut. And if you specifically want to take it under water I would get a waterproof phone or probably more likely get a waterproof case for the phone i had.

I'm not saying its a good idea jut that I wouldn't be to worried about it it unless you intend to actually put it under water.
