We've got a suspect later leak in the pipe under the front garden, we can hear a noise even when the waters not being used. It's a lead pipe, any ideas how much this is going to cost?

First thing to check is your water meter ( if you have one ) is turning when no water in the house is in use, if it is you have a leak.

It's an easy repair for a plumber, probably need to dig a decent hole around the pipe for him though.

Absolutely no idea about cost, anything from a couple of hundred quid to maybe £800, depends where you are to a large degree. however identifying where the leak is will be pretty straightforward in most soil types as you'll notice a puddle or patch of particularly sticky, wet soil.

Start digging there and you'll find your supply pipe.

Are you on a meter? Is it whizzing round with everything turned off? If so, you have a leak. Check before you start digging is probably the best advice.

Maybe a good time to remove the lead pipe and replace with Hepflow plastic water pipe and meter if you're not on one. Your local water board will help with the meter.

Cost will depend upon how much of that you choose to replace/renew. Sorry not to be anymore specific.

Contact your water supplier, a lot of companies will do leaks on your property for free up to point of entry. And if you have a meter you should get a rebate on any lost water.

It's ahead or upstream of the meter as it's not moving, but sounds like water is being used. Suspect a lead pipe under the garden and into the house as there's damp patch appearing on the wall. Which made us join up the dots as it were.

This, we'll (Dwr Cymru) do a free repair once every three years for a domestic property or renew up to 15m of your supply pipe.

It's not anywhere near the foundations of the house it it?

My husband had some fun with a hole in a lead pipe about 20 odd years ago.....

Get it sorted and lead pipes replaced.
