We had the heating oil topped up last week, about €700 worth. Later that day the boiler packs in, plumber comes around and amidst much swearing says the oil has water in it. Man from oil supplier pops around and pumps out between 70 & 90 litres of water. Plumber comes back yesterday and, with even more swearing, so far it’s about three hundred quid for labour and filters and after the trial run yesterday it now looks like the oil pump is shagged too.
So how does that amount of water get in a tank? The tank is plastic and about 15 years old but has no holes in it. The oil supplier guy made some noises about condensation but 70+ litres seems like that might be cobblers, more so as it broke the day they delivered.
Any thoughts? Any guesses on what the final bill is going to be!!!
There is no way you'd get that much condensation. Unless you've left the lid off the tank in a thunderstorm, that water came with an oil delivery. How to prove it is another matter.
For the future, taking a sample during the delivery is worthwhile. Needs to be sealed at the time, with the driver present. With large quantities, it's routine.
For context, I left the big lid off my tank for a month in the winter. Pulled about 5 litres of water out of the bund. So 70-90 litres of water is a supplier balls-up, especially since it broke on the day of delivery.

70 litres of condensation? What, overnight? I know it's been humid recently but good grief, how big is your tank?
Any thoughts?
Fight the supplier. I dunno how much water it takes to break the boiler (I don't use oil) but it it really feasible that it was running fine with 60l of water in there? If not, then it's pretty obvious that the supplier broke it (the proof being the amount of water they took out and that it was working the day before).
Cheers all. Was fairly happy condensation was just rubbish, but am waiting for the plumber to come back for round three before I go back to the supplier. The 70 litres is roughly the level the tap on the 1200ltr tank is sitting at so any water below won't flow out but once you get above this level it would. I think everyone knows it's just bollox but whether they'll admit any fault could be interesting. However one of my friends heard about the problem from a former work colleague of his so it's making the local gossip so that might bring about a resolution (small oil supplier in very rural area).
So an update.
I went to the supplier last week, had a nice chat and said this has cost me €300 to sort, I don't think it's condensation so have a think what you're going to do.
Went back yesterday and after a cheeky €100 offer they took the whole of my costs off the bill.
That's good..... now you need to get [at least some] of the water out. Syphon time!
