Any good?
Hard core comic book following.....FX are awesome.....one the best fights scenes EVER, up there with the lobby scene from Matrix....plus the chic is WAY hotter than Trinity!!
But the big blue dude walking aronud for half the film with his wanger out is a little off puting....
Def worth a watch though !
Depends - if you're Alan Moore then no, if you are a hard core fan of the comic probably no.
If you're unaware of the comic watch the opening credits & it should grab you.
I dislike comic book films, but I thought it was excellent.
Any good?
No.
Great film and I think one of the best opening scenes ever (bob dylan playing)
Its pretty naff, I don't mind if a film is just entertainment for entertainments sake, but I found the characters in it just irritating.
I found it hard work to be honest and certainly wouldn't describe it as a great film but not the worst either.
I think it was rather too long and indulgent but there were some cool effects
HTH
Defintely worth a watching if you've not seen it before (& enjoy sci-fi fantasy)
good, very good if you ask me
I thought it was terrible i saw the extended/directors cut and it just wouldn't end!
Some bastard told me it was a documentary before I went in which made things really confusing.
Great film although a bit bleak. Deffo worth a watch.
i last read the graphic novel maybe 20-25 years ago, and went to see the film with no real expectations. i found it quite enjoyable tbh. not the best film ever, but still decent. then again, i'm a total sucker for sci-fi, great or shit.
Could be a great film, amazing special effects, good story and characters ruined by all the arty bollocks blue guy rubbish that makes the film too long.
bought the directors cut, watched it quite a few times, love it! Great film. Agree the lady is very fetching. 😳
😀
Kev
I got bored about half way through and sent it back to Lovefilm.
Not much happens, and I didn't care enough about what did happen.
i think it's great - and I've read/ like the comic too - although I'm not a major geek
I do seem to have a "thing" for ladies in tight stretchy costumes though
I thought it was rubbish.
All hype.
So there you have it - the resounding STW film critique.
you might like it, you might not, depends on how much beer you drink during it.
Personally I liked it, but I like stuff like comic book movies.
drivel
I will be watching it, the blue man with his wang out was intriguing in the book, so I'll be interested to see how it converts to the screen
Better than the Batman*/Spiderman films, thought it was great! Love the bleak though. Def worth a watch on the telebox.
*except Keaton
I thought it was awful, very dull which is sad because I quite liked the comic books. I just didn't care what happened next to be honest and I've no idea what did because I turned it off.
The start is ace . . . .
Gradually throughout it, got less and less inthralled, some really good bits . . .
. . . . but the end is pretty poor!
Looks good though, worth a watch.
A life-long Alan Moore fan.
Loved the graphic novel.
Really enjoyed the film.
Just accept that you are watching a comic and the characters are suitably larger than life and you'll enjoy it.
Significant that two of the worst reviews come from DrRS**** and nobtwidler. Would I take any notice of an opinion of a couple of dipsticks with usernames like that? Christ no. I liked it, I thought it was a good version of the comic, which I bought when it first came out, along with V for Vendetta, which Alan Moore also hates, and is also a very good version of the comic. Watch it, it's on tv and will cost you nothing but some time, and it's infinitely preferable to most of the execrable trash served up on a Saturday evening. I saw it I the cinema, and got my money's worth. Ignore the critics, watch and make your own mind up.
I thought it dragged pretty badly. Couldn't get into the feel of it, really.
I think it was quite good, but not great. I bought the DVD, but after watching it once haven't been tempted to sit through it again.
Much prefer Sin City, V For Vendetta and 300.
I actually quite liked it. It got panned by the critics which always makes me a little more interested in seeing a film.
Its an OK film as long as you can suspend your disbelief. It actually made me want to read the graphic novel which, believe me, is far more indulgent and long winded than the film. I think the film is a pretty good adaptation.
As for the ending, well thats how the story ended in the comic so the film makers were kind of stuck with including it. I think they did it quite well and made it a bit sharper.
I enjoyed it, wasn't perfect but wasn't awful. Thought it was quite funny that Alan Moore hated it so much, considering that the big change at the end made more sense than his version, getting rid of the bloody stupid pirates was just common sense, and most of the other issues of the film seemed to come from being slavishly loyal. I'm sure in his head it's a travesty but I don't see it.
Then again I thought the comic was pretty over-rated too.
I liked it and liked the book , I could try and justify my view but it would only boil down to personal opinion .
I wasn't sure what to make of it really.
I liked some of it, but it really was not what I was expecting to see.
it's got a good sound track.
I will be watching it, the blue man with his wang out was intriguing in the book, so I'll be interested to see how it converts to the screen
I thought that in some ways it was slavishly devoted to the comic but in trying to copy so many of its scenes and so much of its look it seemed to completely miss the original's feel (or at least what I got out of the comic). Also the director is way more obsessed with violence than the comic was. If it's a fight then there's going to be close-ups and slow-mo whenever a punch is landed or a bone is broken.
The ending makes more sense than the comic's but I have heard arguments as to why the batshit crazy "huh?" ending in the comic actually makes more sense in a demented way. Cutting some of the extra details, such as the pirates, makes sense cinematically where there's barely enough time for the main plot but in the comic they all helped build up the story's tone (plus the whole pirates thing is an important metaphor for one character's arc).
I generally think that the movie would appeal most to someone who's a superhero fan but who either doesn't know the original Watchmen comic or isn't very attached to it.
It was alright but I'd have liked to see them have a go at the ending in the comic book, however messy it turned out.
Great film. I must admit I watched it when it first came onto Sky and I wasn't impressed but I watched it again and then bang, the penny dropped and it's a very very impressive film. I didn't like Pulp Fiction when I first saw that but now it's definitely one of my all-time favourite films.

Ouch :meeps:
I'll try watching it again and see if my irrelevant opinion changes. Hows that? Although the thought of watching an indestructible naked smurf wander around a pointless plot isn't filling me with joy.
There will be worse things to watch on Saturday night thats for sure BUT you don't have to sit in front of the TV Its Saturday night after all loads of better things to do!
Nice use of the insult dipstick too! 😀
Although the thought of watching an indestructible naked smurf wander around a pointless plot isn't filling me with joy.
That makes it sound even more appealing! Although not as appealing as The Saturday Morning Watchmen!
I liked the graphic novel and I liked the film - I thought the changes the film made were necessary. You always have to trim and tweak as there's stuff that will work in one medium that won't work in another. I liked the V for Vendetta film too though, so Moore and Moore purists would probably quite like to set me on fire.
an indestructible naked smurf
Brilliant! 😆
Enjoyed 'Watchmen' but didn't think much of 'V for Vendetta' - that chap in the mask was an irritating little twerp...
personally, I've never seen a good graphic novel turned into a film better than "Ghost World". Really underrated adaptation I reckon.
Over hyped, over long but not complete crap.
It does contain a cracking quote from the Rorschach character just after he's dunked a prisoner into the deep fat fryer.
"You don't understand. I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me!"
Bit long, but nice and bleak. Blue guy with his cock out is a little off putting, but I found just thinking about a song I liked helped those bits pass more easily.
so I guess you didn't think it was about deconstructing the myth or meaning of the superhero within its own context, cos that's all boring comic book stuff anyway. just a film with a blue bloke with a big blue cock and some fight n explosions. see I told you it didn't translate!
just a film with a blue bloke with a big blue cock and some fight n explosions
+1
see I told you it didn't translate from the, oh I didn't, oh never mind.
Sorry, I'm only teasing...it's better than thinking about some of the stuff I saw working in A&E tonight. I rather enjoyed watchmen when I saw it at the cinema.
i'm messing about as well 🙂 it's fun.
For some reason i found the scene where the girls mum is attacked over the pool table very disturbing, i wasn't expecting that at all. A film that exceeds my expectations can only be good
I love the daily mash!! Nice one flashheart!! 😆Cultural analyst Nikki Hollis said: "If you ask me, Watchmen is just Bash Street Kids with hovering blue penises.
I though it was alright but it didn't click for me in the way Sin city did or Three hundred. As for comic book to film conversions go Kick Ass was a good one.
For those who liked the graphic novel without becoming an obsessed fanboy, you'll enjoy the accuracy in the transfer to the big screen. The whole story has a certain resonance as it involves a 'false flag' operation.
I also have a soft spot for the Stallone Judge Dredd film. Again, I liked the comics but didn't become a fanboy and therefore enjoyed the film, they got the world spot-on.
If you want to see a big blue superhero you can't get better than...
THE TICK
The most hilarious super hero since 'Mystery Men'. Watch out for Batmanuel, it's Nestor Carbonell from Lost!
I liked it, but as said before didn't like them monkeying around with the ending
Worth it solely for Rorschach's "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me" scene
It's probably the best possible two hour adaptation of the book you could do, would have loved to have seen Gilliam's mini-series though if that had gone ahead, there's too much for two hours.
I actually think the film ending works a lot better than it would have if the books ending was used on screen.
Watchmen, flawed but good. Well worth a watch. It's got to be better than the comic book crap I'm watching at the moment, The Hulk. Started ok but has turned into a farce.
Con Air's on BBC1 if you fancy something a bit more cerebral
is it me or has the sound screwed up?
I adore the book. And I loved the film. So there you are. All sorted.
My feelings about it are a little obvious 🙂
Enjoyed seeing that - thks for putting the thread up or I wouldn't ahve known it was on.
Great feel to the film but too much reverence for the book IMHO. Really hard to adapt, you either butcher it to get something well-structured, but that usually ends up as formulaic holywood garbage. Or you pay homage and get a superb look and atmosphere but a completely un-workable film. Watchmen felt too close to the latter; being 12 hours long didn't help. Agree that they probably did the best they could for a tricky adaptation.
Don't know if I was just tired but found it a bit boring and gave up 2/3 through it.
too much reverence for the [s]book [/s] comic
FTFY.
Don't know if I was just tired but found it a bit boring and gave up 2/3 through it
me too saw it was on until 1am and thought balls I'm off to bed - sorry
Yup I gave up about 2/3rds though. Just didn't feel engaged by the characters.
personally, I've never seen a good graphic novel turned into a film better than "Ghost World". Really underrated adaptation I reckon.
I personally think The Walking Dead is the best adaptation, sometimes I think when adapting graphic novels or books, the format would better suit a tv serial.
300 is my favourite graphic novel adaptation, beautifully stylised.
I think my favourite graphic novel adaptation is Scott Pilgrim. I also loved Kick Ass, and quite a lot of the Marvel superhero ones too (Thor, X-Men First Class, Iron Man).
We do not speak of Spiderman 3 or Ghost Rider. Ever.
I tucked myself into bed at midnight and left the computer recording the rest of it. Finished it off last night. I rather enjoyed it, but then Ive never ready a comic book story either.
I particularly like Rorshach. Sufficiently nasty bastard.
And oddly enough I dont feel threatened by a computer generated Smurf phallus on the screen. Must be the modern man that I am 🙂
Rorshach is the best comic/graphic novel, or whatever you want to call them, character I've read. Clearly bonkers and doesn't run around in tights. As far as know...
And oddly enough I dont feel threatened by a computer generated Smurf phallus on the screen. Must be the modern man that I am
Neither was I. I think it was because the afore mentioned Smurf phallus wasn't exactly a trip hazard.
