Hello hive mind:

I’ve been connecting a laptop to my (non smart) flatscreen tv to watch red bull’s coverage of the WC for many years with little or no trouble until this season... it’s an oldish laptop and it’s seemingly really struggling with the RedBullBike live web page regardless of browser. Where as streaming on my iphone6sPlus is flawless and immediate for the entire broadcast. I’m not enjoying the 5.5in screen experience though...

Im aware of the HDMI connector Apple sell to mirror content but can someone confirm if this will work with the RedBull app? I’m led to believe some apps are blocked from this screen mirroring- even using the Apple hardware, but I’m looking for some confirmation before I go  ahead and buy it. Thoughts?

I don't know if it will show with Screen Mirroring, but I don't seem to be able to cast from RedBull.

But... Apple HDMI adapter is £20, NowTV Box (which had a RedBull app) is £10 and comes with 2 months Entertainment Pass (there's no need to renew or indeed use this to watch RedBull) it also has apps for BBC, C4 and others.

I can confirm that Red Bull TV works when my iPhone 8+ is connected to a Sony TV using an Apple HDMI to lightning connector. I've only ever used the proper Apple connector (around £49 I think).

I know that the SkyQ app doesn't work that way but not sure about others.

What does the HDMI connector cost?  It may be better to buy a second hand Apple TV (3rd generation should be cheap ish) as I've found the RedBull app on that to be the most reliable means of streaming (beating my chromecast) or you can airplay directly from the phone.

The other option is to buy a Google Chromecast for £30 which will let you stream from any device to your TV where ever the 'cast' option is available within apps.

We use this solution for Netflix, NowTV, Redbull, Youtube, Twitch.... loads of stuff.

It also means your phone/iPad then functions as a remote rather than having to be tethered to the TV someway.

Ah cheers for that- looks like a Chromecast might be a slicker way to do this. Can you explain the casting procedure using a chromecast and RedBull app?

Yup, you go into the app, hit the cast button, choose where you want to cast it to from your phone, and pres play on your phone. Phone then acts as a remote. It's that easy.

Blummin love my Chromecasts 🙂

But you can't cast from an iPhone to a Chromecast can you?

You'd want to get an AppleTV to do the equivalent, at which point you're better off just using the AppleTV Red Bull app. That's going to be more expensive  than other options (Apple HDMI adapter, some kind of other streamer that  has a Red Bull app).

Chromecast Redbull TV off iphone/ipad here too. Works well.

Once you have your Chomecase plugged into your telly and connected to your wi-fi (it takes you through that process when you plug it in), you get the cast icon in the app.

If the app supports it you can. And many do, including RedBull TV.

Thanks guys. And DezB there- I’d been aware of the chromecast, but looks like this might be the way forward.

You can Chromecast from almost anything.

If you use Google Chrome on any device (laptop, PC, Mac, etc) you can cast directly from the browser. So you can use your TV as an external screen, of sorts.

just a shout out to those who gave me advice about the Chromecast. Its excellent and one of those items i wish I'd had much sooner. The test will be the WC this weekend but its already has some sterling service with Netflix and Youtube etc. Thanks lads.
