boy 2's leaving it a bit late, hes panicking now as Euros start friday and hes just realised he cant watch live ITV.
they dont have an aerial nor a laptop, just phones. they do however have a smart TV with the ITV Hub app. however, it doesnt look like you cant access live tv through that.
ive suggested chromecast from his phone, he says you cant cast the live tv, and as he doesnt have a laptop then he cant go direct from HDMI either.
hes tried a couple of portable aerials, he says neither of them work, just pick up a crap signal for a couple of minutes then nothing.
is his only option a freeview aerial do you think (or buy a laptop), or is there another cunning method that i havent thought of?
cheers
Surely the smart TV has an standard TV aerial connector? Cant you just get an indoor TV aerial (can buy for under £10)?
Or (if hes old enough), go to the pub?
"Live TV" appears as an option at the top of the screen in my ITV Hub app (2019 Samsung). It'll only show content they've streaming rights for though.

sorry, i maybe worded it badly, thats what i meant by the 'portable' aerials. hes tried a couple of indoor aerials and cant get a signal, possibly in a bad signal area?
hes not really much of a pub goer, but that may end up his only option.
thanks

it doesnt on his, and ive just checked, it doesnt on mine either. we both have fairly new LG's.
STV player for those of us up north seems to show more live stuff than itv hub. No idea if that incl football. You may need to fire a Scottish postcode at it to work.
Buy a standard attic / roof TV aerial and use that? Even if he doesn't mount it permanently they're pretty cheap.

Does it support video over usb? That may work.

ill suggest that to him, thanks.

sorry, i dont understand that. how would that work, and if it does indeed support it, how would he access itv?
You might be able to get a lead that plugs from the phone to an HDMI port on the TV. Lots of phones support it
what about ITV hub via an Amazon firestick? does that support live tv?
I've wathed live tv on "FreeView Play" and also "TVPlayer" - both sitting on my smart TV with no ariel connection.
I thought live content was now available on ITV Hub - it has been for me for ages (Samsung TV with the app installed and elsewhere using a Firestick).
I do think the button for 'Live TV' is a bit hidden though so perhaps the OP just needs to have a closer look?
Just checked on ITV hub on my Samsung tv and you can watch live tv, second button from the left on the top row after the home button. May be different on your LG though. Hth.
He could also watch it via his phone and mirror it to the Smart TV. ITV hub does have live TV. I won't mention TV license !
If he can't get anything sorted it looks like you can stream live ITV content using the ITV Hub and a web browser - https://www.itv.com/hub/itv

thats a good call, and i remembered ive got an old one in a drawer. powered it up, installed the itv hub and i can indeed access live tv with it. however, its very jerky, keeps freezing etc. that could be my wifi signal and his may be better, but as i never have any problems streaming and i have a 100 mb virgin connection, im going to hazard a guess that the weakest link will be the firestick itself.
ill pass it on to him to try for himself tho, thanks

been looking into this, my tv (which is pretty much the same as his) doesnt have either of these. tvplayer seems to be a subscription, and im a bit confused by freeview play, cant work out how to get this app on the tv. ill investigate further.

yes, its a different layout on ours, i cant find that button anywhere. if i click 'itv' from the selection, its just a list of streamed programmes.

ill pass that on to him to try too.

he doesnt have a laptop, only his phone. hed be able to do this on his phone, but he would then need to mirror/cast his phone screen to the tv.
thanks
YouTube?
Just open a browser on the telly and go to itv.com
No live option on itv hub on my LG telly but I don't really care as everything on itv is shit.

ITV4 is the home of Gary, Ned and David for the cycling coverage. How dare you!

If it's an old firestick then rest it to factory defaults, that may well help.
I installed a (non smart) TV in my mums kitchen. It had no Arial so I fitted a Amazon Fire TV Stick. Her broadband speeds were low (about 2Mb down and sometimes less than 500K up), but she was able to watch ITV 'live' from that. The only tweak I made to her setup was to move the AP to a better location for the whole house, but especially for the Kitchen TV.
YouTube?
i thought surely not, cant be that easy, and indeed it doesnt seem to be. i looked on youtube but there doesnt appear to be any itv live tv on there.
EDIT: thought after i posted that that you may just mean the footys live on there rather than itv live? itd be a bit close to the wire gambling on that being the case tho.
Just open a browser on the telly and go to itv.com
another 'surely not' moment, but getting closer. i find the browser, log into my account, press 'watch tv live' but then it just spins, never actually connects.
tried singletrack on there, that comes up fine, the itv website itself does too, it just spins out on the 'live' bit.
If it’s an old firestick then reset it to factory defaults, that may well help.
youve come up with the goods again mate. done exactly that, reset the stick, logged back in and its not as jerky. not perfect by any means but better, and this may be his best option now unless his tv browser connects better than mine, but im guessing its maybe supposed to not work for live tv.
thanks for your help

Does he have an old sky dish? I use freesat on my previous and current LG smart TV's with an old sky dish rather than aerial.
Freesat is built in to most LG TV's you just have to tell it use satellite dish as reciever instead of an aerial.

no, thats one of the things i asked him and a route we went down too.
he actually sent me a pic earlier of an aerial socket on his wall. i asked him if hed tried it..... i think you can guess the answer cant you 🤣
however, he has checked his roof and there doesnt appear to be an aerial, but ive told him to at least stick a cable from the wall socket to the telly and prove it 😀
There could be an aerial inside the loft, perhaps

well he's now tried an aerial lead from this socket to the telly, no joy, so probably not a hidden aerial anywhere. he says hes been told its the connection from a sky dish they still have up (they dont have sky account nor a box at present) but im not convinced these sockets feed sky signal. am i wrong?
Those sockets generally are for freeview tv but you can use them for satellite tv as well, just depends what it’s connected to at the other end. Has he tried retuning his tv when connected to the plate?
If not he should.
