A bit disappointing.

Just felt that Tom Hanks looked far too old for a WW2 destroyer Captain.

I was looking forward to it but it just didn't live up to my expectations.

Not a terrible movie but not 5 stars.

He does look a bit old to be an inexperienced Captain.
Will probably be watching this tonight.

The book that Greyhound is based on (The Good Shepard) is about a Navy Captain (Krause) who, although quite senior, has little combat experience and has been passed over for promotion. so it's reasonably faithful to the novel on which it's based.

That is my expectation of Tom Hanks. He's like the Billy Joel of movies.

I gave this a try last night, it was OK though it did give any sort of realism a very wide berth. It was pleasingly short at 80 mins without credits so it didn't really risk outstaying its welcome.

Even so, a career officer would not of been older than his forties. Hanks is in his 60's and looks it.

Mleh, he owns the rights to the book, and is a bankable actor...what did you expect? I think partly the issue is that in the US navy of the 1940's 45 (from recall that's Krause's age) and is old guy (amongst capts who were often in their 20's) but nowadays 45 ain't that old, and it wouldn't look out of place (we expect Capt. of those sorts of ships to that sort of age) . The point we're supposed to react to is here's this old dude amongst all these kids...Sounds like it's worked.

His EXO was in his forties. Must of been the oldest command team in the war.

I thought it was pretty good. Hanks always puts in a decent performance as far I've seen & Stephen Graham was a surprise too, he can do a fair range of accents that's for sure.
Pleasingly for a war film there weren't many lulls, it was 'action stations' virtually from the off.
There again, I'm no expert film critic, I either enjoy or don't.

<puts nerd hat on and goes all nasally>
Actually I'd be more concerned they used a fletcher class destroyer in the North Atlantic, as they almost exclusively operated in the Pacific Theatre. (the flush deck was not good in rough seas)

though i enjoyed it anyway

If you're going for a nerd-off I'd be more bothered that they were using a Fletcher class 3 months before the first of them was commissioned.

Still thought the film was an OK piece of fluff though!

Not as bad as the French Cold War destroyer in Dunkirk.

Well, after trying unsuccessfully last night, and again this morning to log in to Apple TV on my mk3 Apple TV I’ve given up, so I’ve no opinion on the film even though I’d liked to have watched it. Hey ho.

The UK's best sub buster was in his late 40s.

They're doing a 7 day free trial, that'll give you long enough to take in "The Morning Show" as well.

When I saw the trailer - I thought Hollywood was stealing our (UK) history again - but it is based on the novel as mentioned previously - but look up Frederick "Johnnie" Walker if you want to know about sinking uboats - tragic elements though - statue in Liverpool. Not been yet, but will go on the next taxi run taking the daughter back at University.

Which means that if you have also watched Greyhound, you will have watched all of the interesting content on Apple TV.

You also get free 12months access if you have purchased any hardware from Apple in the last year.

Well, I feel there must be something else but tbh I'm struggling...

Maybe wait until "Foundation" on the off chance they don't cock that up and make a proper week of it!

‘For all mankind’ is my favourite show on there, it takes historical elements of the space race but starts from the premise that Russians got to the moon first.

I watched it last night and quite enjoyed it. I don't think it's going to win any oscars - but thats ok.

The only thing that seemed incongruous was the inexperienced captain's masterful manoevering of the ship to avoid multiple torpedoes and then put them in a good firing position on the u-boats. I think Hanks portrayed his self-doubt well at other times - but when things heated-up, he was transformed into some sort of sure-footed sub-evading tactical genius.

I did enjoy it, but I got the impression that there was probably about another hr of worthwhile scenes/dialogue that didn't make the edit.
