I want to get a swiss watch serviced, but the quote from the main dealer is disproportionate. It's10 yrs old, losing 16 secs a day but otherwise fully functioning, so it is just a service.
Before consigning it to the sock drawer, are there any recommended independents?
I know Tomian on Forth Street had a great reputation an I used them in the past for an old pocket watch, but I know they've closed down.
Any other recommendations?
What watch?
Rolex GMT
The guy at the Canongate is worth going to for entertainment, allow half an hour at least and be prepared for the smell of frying sausages.
I'd look for an independent guy on a watch forum. I used one a while ago, he turned his nose up at my inferior Japanese Seiko's.
There really isnt a lot of point taking that to a regular independent. They cant get parts, its £4500 worth of watch, i’d do it properly. Even the indies which are accredited by Rolex will charge you £450 plus.
Youve got Genesis in carlisle and vincents in hamilton not too far from you, but i bet its not much cheaper than main dealer.
You could try Winskis in Kinross, a lot closer to you and a proper independent for regulation but i dont think theyd touch a modern gmt for a service.
"You could try Winskis in Kinross"
They have a branch in Cowdenbeath too, not the most inspiring shop from the outside or even the counter, but the guys know their stuff. My neighbour took in his Omega Speedmaster, they had the special tools to repair some issue it had. If I ever need my watch batteries changing, it's where I go.
You could send Christian a mail, http://watchguy.co.uk
he was recommended on here a few times...
How does the linky thing work now?
