Earlier this week when trimming back the hedge outside of our property (ie not our hedge) we stumbled across a wasp nest. We found it by cutting into it with the hedge trimmers.

The hedge itself is on public land behind our house & has got so overgrown that it's a bit of a struggle to walk past. The only people who have access to this path our ourselves & our neighbours. According to the council this is our problem & they won't remove it, their advice was just be careful of it...

Is it a council problem? Or should we just get the pest controller in & try to split the cost with our neighbours?

I'd just leave it alone, or buy a can of 4.99 wasp nest foam.

Are you getting stung? It's nearly the end of the wasp season so leave it alone if no-one is getting stung.

Failing that do something heroic with a big stick, Laura Ashley cushion and fire and let us know how it goes 😉

Wasn't there a sizeable and amusing thread on this a while ago?

Ignoring it isn't really an option as we want to take the overgrown hedge back as it's currently blocking half the path.

Is the path a public right of way?

Just buy some wasp nest killing powder. £4, works in days, but if you've already cut in to it and not been stung to death already I'd just carry on as you are. The wasps will all be dying off now, and the queen will buzz off and make a new nest elsewhere.

It's accessible by the public, but only leads into our gardens - the neighbours gate is the end of the path.

split the cost with your neighbours then.

Unless they have a statutory duty to maintain it they won't go near it.

Just leave it a few weeks and they will all be dead.

Kill it with fire. Hedge no longer needs maintenance and the wasps die.

One of my customers has had one in her garden for a few months now, i just avoided that flower bed. I couldn't resist any longer on Monday, i poured a little bit of petrol down the hole and did a little trail a few foot back, lit it with the blow torch, it made a lovely sound as it went up in a mini explosion..............no more wasps 🙂
