Hello

I've found a wasp nest in my loft, around ten inches or a foot high and maybe five or six inches in diameter.

I think it's dormant, no sign of any wasp activity and it's silent. It is in the way for insulation though.

Any surefire way to check if it is dormant? If it's active I'm happy to leave them to do their thing, they don't seem to be causing any problems but if it's no longer in use I'd like rid of it so I can put Kingspan there instead.

Obviously don't want to assume it's dormant and then try to remove it and find out I'm wrong... Wrap up well and pop my midge net on just in case?

Cheers

solid whack with a broom-handle should do it 😉

(apparently they rarely/never reuse so may well be deserted)

If you go up there during the day and you can't hear anything or see any wasps then I would suspect it probably is dormant. Note that wasps are diurnal so at night time they are asleep which means that you can probably remove it then.

If you can see where they're coming in and out of your loft you could always watch during the daytime for a few minutes just to see if you can see wasps coming backwards and forwards. But to be honest, if during the day you are in your loft and you can't hear anything. They're probably not there

By the way, the dedicated wasp nest killer liquid. I've never had much luck with, but cheap ant powder works beautifully. If you have an industrial vacuum cleaner or one that takes a bag, you can then just use that to suck away the wasp nest (hey Henry, Hoover works perfectly as you could then take the bag out and throw it away)

'probably' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence

RE: Wasps neat

I prefer them with soda and a dash of lime juice.

As above; I prefer them as diluted as possible.

While it's nice that they've kept things tidy this may have left them very tired and sleepy even during daylight hours.  As a result I'd be a bit cautious about the no noise method of nest checking and also because even though they are amazing creatures and of great value to the ecosystem they're also irritating, sadistic denizens of evil and I'm not messing with their nest.

I'd really appreciate it if you could package it up and send it to my brother in law.
