Washing machine is now 15months old and today it has started making a whining noise.

I am guessing belt slipping but not sure? any ideas how to tell?

After some guidance as to what is the best course of action,

I seem to remember the EU stipulates appliances and lifetimes. can i get the supplier to fix it gratis? how much is a repair man likely to cost to have a look?

etc

Thats not the machine. Its the missus complaining she has to do the washing all the time.

Our washing machine was making some odd noises a few years back. That turned out to be the wire from a bra stuck in the drum. Seem to remember that was a bit of a whining sound, so it might be worth you having a close look inside to see if anything is stuck in the little drain holes.

(It wasn't my bra, just in case you were about to ask)

When I worked for Hoover Candy our call out was £99,that was 4 years ago mind, so probably gone up again since,If the belt has stretched they usually come off and you notice the drums not turning,Try turning the
drum by hand to see if it's catching on something, usually a bra wire as jon1973 said,It's unlikely to be the bearings after 15 months. You can get stuff stuck in the drain pump that catches on the impeller. With most machines you can tip the machine backwards to 45 degrees and take out the filter cover to see if there's something stuck in there.

Are you certain that whining noise is from the washing machine and not from the whining thread above?

You're not supposed to wash children in it - of course they'll whine.

Might also be the carbon brushes wearing out, if it has brushes.

Open up the pump, there is usually a twist open thing accessible from the front.
Be ready to catch any water. Once it has emptied have a feel around for any crap stuck in there.

opened up the inspectin flap, just water in there and not a great amount of that. Noise only really seems to happen as it gets up to speed on spins, hence wondering if something is slipping.

Possible belt slippage i suppose, but unlikley ?
15 months old so it shouldnt be the bearings - is there any play on the (inner) drum ??
Check carbons too ....If it has any 😆

the drum does move a bit, but nothing i would describe as excessive, it certainly isn't anything like the play in the old washing machine (which happened to have the bearings self destruct!)

There should be NO movement between the inner (stainless) and outer tub . Grip the inner, give it a VERY firm up & down shake. A slight knock or movement means the bearings are on their way out ....
