I installed a washing machine in my cellar and the waste outlet had to be a bit higher than I’d like because of the ground level outside. As such when I installed the vertical pipe section and then the flexible drain hose it sticks out above the washer quite a bit.
I want to put a worktop over it so I am wondering how much I can cut the vertical waste pipe down by. I’ve read as long as the top bend is above the drum it’ll be ok as the drain pipe layout is there to stop water being syphoned out of the washer but does the vertical section have to be a minimum length or not?

😆
They were being used to chip off the loose white stuff on the walls and fill some gaps in, not for plumbing honest guv. 🙂
My drain just runs out sideways and down connecting under the sink, never heard of needing a top bend...
How high is the drain exit through the wall?

It needs a top bend to stop water potentially siphoning back into the washing machine.

And this.
I used to repair and install white goods a fair few years ago and this is correct. If you place the bend a few inches below the top of the machine, then mark and cut the pipe as high as you can to the start of the outlet side of the bend it will be fine. Make sure you have minimum of roughly 4 inches of outlet hose after the bend in the white pipe.
You will need that few inches to be able to get the bend in and out of the pipe when the worktop is in situ.
One chap with a washing machine in his cellar, couldn't get it to pump up to the drains and so, knowing that his house was above old mine workings, cored down through the cellar floor until he hit the mine. Job sorted, just pumped the waste water into the mine.
But, because the mine workings were unstable it was decided to pump them full of concrete, the wet concrete flowed up, filling his cellar and it was only when a neighbour noticed it coming out of the letter box that the concrete pump was turned off!!

WTAF?????????? 😯
Gnusmas - thanks very much that’s very helpful.
How high is the drain outlet from the house? the open bit on the washer waste has to be above this

Not sure what you mean there.
You said its in the basement. what height compared to the washer is the drain from the building?
I don’t remember exactly but from recollection the hole in the wall is about halfway up the back of the washer. Certainly no more than that. Couldn’t get it any lower as I needed the right amount of fall to the soil stack. The wall you can see is probably only around 30-40cm underground as it opens out to the back garden.

I don’t think that’s the case. It’s common to connect a washing machine or dishwasher to the waste under a kitchen sink - often with the pipe connected to a spigot (?) with a jubilee clip. Height of a Sink trap is going to be a lot lower than the top of the washing machine drum. I *think* you just need to hook the waste pipe up so the the highest point of it is above the drum - not the waste pipe it flows into.
should be OK then - I was worried about the flow from the washer overwhelming the wastes ability to drain
Brilliant, thanks tor the help all.
