Well, you've got the contract and we haven't. Would you rather we'd have guessed? "Mine was great, go for it!!" "Mine was shit, avoid!!" How the frank can we give you feedback on [i]your[/i] contract that we know nothing about?

It's a standard Internet thing, my ask was based in the fact someone may have been through the process and tried a claim. I want to know if it becomes difficult to weasel cash out them or they do what they say on the tin: pay up.

From speaking to a mate who runs s garage, most of the aftermarket warranty companies are difficult to get money out of. They almost always find a way to weasel out of paying up.

I'll find out in a couple of months. Car needs a couple of bits that *should* be covered by warranty wise. I'll get the garage to check them when it goes in for a service.

Check all the contract. I almost took outcome a few years ago with warranty direct but it was a sliding scale of 'contribution' due to age etc. Might have changed it now.

We got a 12 month warranty Wise Gold policy with my wife's car.
To be honest I was sceptical after having no joy with warranty direct in the past.
However they were pretty good.
Paid out for replacement drop links, air con condenser and something else, all without quibble.
We just took the car to Halfords and they dealt with WW directly.

Yep - a couple of years ago, when my Toyota Corolla was a couple of months out of warranty. First quote from the dealer was 16k to re-build the original. Second quote was 8k for a new one. Finally Toyota relented and 'donated' a new transmission & I just paid the labour to have it fitted.

Reminds me- a Toyota tech once told me a Corolla Tsport needed a new midsection exhaust. They quoted him 3k and said the lot needed replacing (he had to say that- rules of dealership probably). The Tech told me you could have that section for £200 aftermarket.

edit: I see their higher levels of cover do include things like droplinks.

Just done a quote on my new2me car and it's £1025/yr for up to 4yr/40k cover which isn't particularly stellar as it's fairly limited on what they cover at that level.

That was the price if they rebuilt the original transmission and torque converter (auto) with all new parts, and included labour.

Apparently they price this up first to see if it's a cheaper option than replacing the whole thing with a new one. I don't think they seriously expected me to go that route, and in fact I had the distinct impression they just told me that price so that after they picked me up off the floor and told me they could fit a whole new transmission for half the price, I'd see that as a bargain and go for it!

I chose to continue to argue with Toyota that warranty period or not, a modern auto transmission shouldn't self destruct in less than 100,000 kms. Clearly they agreed as they eventually gave me a new transmission "in good faith" and I only paid the dealership's labour charge for fitting it.

I count myself as having got off lightly, and will take much more notice of warranty periods/extended warranties etc. next time I buy a car!

My car was health checked yesterday and noted with play in the steering rack - a £1200* fix. Plus its an '08 Diesel and therefore has a DMF at 75k miles.

£400 pales into insignificance if either of those goes, let alone both.

Agreed. My car is coming up for it's 84,000 mile service and I'm having difficulty getting into second gear and it then occasionally pops out. Might be a cheap fix, might be very painful. The warranty covers dealer parts and labour rates so I can drop it off with them and not worry if the bill runs into the thousands.

On another note- OP look at the tie rods or a pattern part. If any garage said you've got play in the steering rack and its cost 1.2k probably I'd get a second opinion anyway.

On another note, WW have just called me re my internet quite last night, knocked a tenner off the price and included more stuff. I'll read through the T&C's they sent later but for my £426 I get:

Unlimited no. repairs, excluding bodywork only
Dealer Labour rate up to £100ph covered
All mechanical defects incl wear and tear up to a £2000 single claim.
Recovery, Hire car, hotel and expenses to return home
Airbags, Aircon, emissions and MOT failure covered
£100 contribution per repair by me.

Kryton- try WD- I let them ring me for a week or so and they knocked £100 off. I didnt take them up.

Say to WW its not enough- can they do better as you are going to WD.

The other thing- cover for cars over 80,000miles may obviously cost more and might have more exclusions.

TBH though I'm struggling to decide which is "Better" as they seem to offer quite different things, and Then you hear WD can be problematic, but they have the advantage of being based in Reading (according to the fella who rang) me so I can march into their offices and start shouting if they do piss me about...

I've started combing the exclusions given for both, and I'm looking into the various know common faults with our car, Gearbox, Engine and ECU's make me the most nervous as the breakdown of cover/exclusions seems to get very detailed for all of these policies.

So thats mine as well. I had a manufacturer PAK update that lifted power and revs to erase a characteristic flatspot.

I've just done the same cookeaa over my lunch hour. In my case it seems that WW cover more and are £90 cheaper. Plus the Sales team have been on the phone, offered me 13 months for the price of 12, and thrown in the extra's I noted above.

Seeing as I drive around the country for work it feels an no brainer, but there is an element of mis-trust with these things that causes a nagging doubt...

I've had a warranty direct warranty on my car for the past 3 years.

Some things are covered, others aren't, as you would expect. However, they have paid out for a new turbo, new dpf and new steering rack in the last 12 months.

All in all, I'm better off than not having the warranty even now when I'm liable for 50% of the parts cost.

For me, the value of a warranty depends on the mileage you do each year. I do 30k miles so that means big costs can roll round much sooner than for those who drive less.

From memory, my warranty is £324 a year on a car with 130k miles on the clock.

In over 15yrs of the motor trade I haven't found a single aftermarket warranty that 'consistantly' delivers what it promises and the customer expects.

I accept that some instances the customer gets exactly what they want but I have many many others where they have been rejected.

It usually comes down to one of two things. Was it a pre existing fault before the warranty was taken out. Or is it more than likely down to wear and tear.

Warranties do not cover wear and tear so if the car has a few miles on then its quite easy to claim it was wear.

What car, age and mileage are you looking to put a warranty on? If its gone out of manufacturers warranty, would you really expect the car to be covered under another warranty? This is why they are usually sold by dealerships/garages. They have to prove that they have carried out the relevant checks on the vehicle before the warranty is issued.

Took the warranty out at 70k miles and was told it included wear and tear cover if the part was mentioned in the policy booklet, haven't looked at it recently but every time the car needs some work I get my mechanic to phone up.

Warranty doesn't cover for things like shock absorbers or brake pads/discs but the turbo was covered and that was almost certainly W&T.

That's true. If it's a new purchase you could be covered by the dealer warranty, assuming they do actually cover something.

I've done two quotes- WD were cheaper 360 v 400 but WW had £750 max claims on alot of things (weird).

Might wait for their calls now.

Yep, good plan. They'll be in touch in a couple of days and will knock some cash off the total.

WD also allow you to pay by 4 payments over first 3 months (interest free). Made my life easier...

Well, it's time to decide. I spent yesterday trawling through negative reviews, finding a few positive ones including a bloke who had his porche drivetrain replaced by warrantywise.

The specialist is willing to make the call for me should I need it, and he'll be much more convincing than me so I guess it'll be ok....
