Sellers last post was a week ago, and is now banned according to his original fs thread. Doesn't look good....

I still think it's odd that a scammer would offer cash on collection...

Funnily I reported that advert as a possible scam within an hr of it going up. Nothing happened. Sellers say collection welcome to add credence to their ad, but then live in the arse end of nowhere so collections not really possibly to anyone but .2%. And the fact his email address was registered this yr with no Whois data.

That is an interesting one, I know we're not allowed to post pointing out better deals on classifieds but are we allowed to post saying we think its a scam?? Guessing its not fair if its wrong but ones like this would have saved the OP a lot of cash.

BTW I hope you refunded your daughter for your stupid decision!!

That's what the 'report post' button is for.

Instant feedback on someone who you believe is a scammer is a lot quicker than reporting it and waiting for it to be removed (or not). Not sure there's a right answer but in this instance it would have stopped some thieving scumbag getting away with money.

Did anyone get an address from him for the so called collections he was happy for people to do?

If so I would be paying him a visit and perhaps taking a big s*&t on his doorstep.

If its true and he has ripped these people off he deserves all he gets....

Classified only user getting scammed by another classified user using paypal gift threads are as common now as 29er threads.

Maybe just maybe if they came onto the rest of the forum they would see the other threads from other "scammed classifieds only users" and learn from it.

Never at all said it was acceptable, far from it. Just saying that if they read up on other people's experiences of dealing with PP gift they might think twice about using it themselves.

What really ****s me off is 'My bike has been stolen' - garage or shed. Sorry not a chance I'd leave my bike in a shed (I've got a wooden one and a brick-built one). Not because if it was insured I'd get the money but the fact that someone would be benefiting from stealing my property.

Inflammatory but if its insured why bother posting it up? You are getting your pay out. You left it in a shed. what do you expect? Thieves like visiting sheds. You know theres a high chance of it happening so don't appear shocked if it does.

Top trolling there. Even by your standards.

No. 'Look out for my pride and joy folks'. Its a [Insert 3k of kit] and I'm really upset. They broke into my SHED and stole £3,000 that I kept in this:

[img] [/img]

The bikes can't go in the house as theres a shed in the garden you see. Its not a beacon to thieves at all.

Its not trolling- its ****ing ridiculous that WE keep thousands of pounds inside a shed.

Whats my point? Well with all the scammer threads going on - and the 'stolen from garage/shed' you'd think people would think twice about leaving valuable property in them.

Back on topic. I saw something I liked on STW- a newish STW- it sold within minutes of being posted up. Are people actually doing mental proper checks before rushing to buy?

Hora would it be possible to store my bikes in your house, perhaps somewhere in the east wing?, only we are having the frescos retouched in our rear lobby which is where Id usually keep them

Actually... I'm now quite concerned. Three arms would come in rather handy if you're trying to hold both a D lock and a set of bolt croppers. Hmmmmmm. In light of that I may have to evaluate my security. I've seen some bike locks in Tesco.....

kimbers I live in a standard semi. (no binners I didn't say that sort of semi).

If you own multi-bikes keep the snotters in the shed and your Pride and joy in a bike bag.

If they want your bikes they will nick them regardless.
Sometimes i lock my bike in the shed sometimes i don't.
Ps i live next door to an MI5 surveillance person so I'm assuming security is quite good!

3K for a bike? Pfft I wouldn't worry about leaving cheap tat like that in my shed....!

I regularly leave a 15 grand car just in random, streets, car parks etc too! Should I convert my front room and get a garage door fitted?

I'm not sure. Accepting 'normal' but asking for any fees to be covered is probably ok.

It's only accepting gift that's the problem?

Agree. Let not let this happen again. Any mention of 'gift' ----> gets a ban.
Agree with that,

I'm not sure. Accepting 'normal' but asking for any fees to be covered is probably ok.

People come on here to sell because they avoid ebay's fee's. The least they can do is accept the paypal fee. Or include it in the price.

everything should be kept in the for sale thread not done by PM apart from payment details ec, that way you have recourse with the police

I maybe wrong but joined two weeks ago and already two forks for sale. This sort of thing needs caution (the seller MAY be totally kosher- and probably is) - but caution would work here all the same.

Hora. Maybe you could write a weekly column of your unfounded suspicions and random worrying, as a stickie at the top of the classifieds. Could the mods sort this?

Perhaps, but either way it still needs reporting. I expect moderation would be fairly swift in that sort of situation.

I don't know as "this sort of thing" needs caution so much as, buying and selling on the classifieds (any classifieds, not just STW) needs caution.

The poster's history looks legit to me at a cursory glance (he has a receipt for at least one of the items too), but that's no measure of anything. Look at the iDave case, for example.

I'm not sure as randomly going "hey, he looks a bit dodgy!" at every new user is particularly helpful or welcoming. Report it if you think it needs investigation.

I thought iDave was know to people on here.

He was - there was a group of people who were forever defending him which complicated matters.

I still think his problem was incompetence (and some circumstane) rather than malice but it ended up the same way for those he took money off. He didn't do himself any favours when he started trying to sort it all out, either.

I thought iDave was know to people on here.

Precisely my point. Even with known, trusted posters you should still be careful when it comes to parting with goods / money.

As a third party observer, I don't know the true story behind iDavegate. He's claimed to have had various technical and personal difficulties so may well be an innocent victim of circumstance. However, the bottom line is that there are still people out of pocket.

So what I'm saying is, you can't be too careful.
