Anyone who buys something of high value off the classifieds when the seller has only been on here for 4 days needs their head read.
First thing I do if I dont recognise the name is look at their profile and history. Anyone who's been a member less than a year is usually ignored. I'd rather lose out on a good deal than get shafted.

Out of interest, why does the OP (who seems to be solely a classifieds dweller ironically) start EVERY thread he opens with ">>". Is it some sort of code or just "LOOK AT ME IM IMPORTANT YOU KNOW"?

My ISP at home (Lancashire) means the internet thinks I'm in London... as that's where I "exit" my ISPs network.

If I were from t'Lancashire I'd pretend to be from London too.

xiphon - plenty of proxies to hide an ip, to say nothing of a laptop with mobile broadband which is as traceable as a mobile phone. and a bought domain isn't necessarily static, email can be forwarded to a webmail account like hotmail which can be accessed from anywhere.

Um, You've posted on an internet forum, why should he keep his comments to himself?

As for being patronised, if you don't want people to patronise you then don't send people hundreds of quid for .....

I wish there was a rule where all these 'omg i've been scammed' threads had to be posted on the classified forum only.

At least I wouldn't have to read them then and it might make other people browsing the classifieds wake up a bit.

In fairness, it sometimes takes me a week just to sort packaging if I'm on earlies... That said, is it innapropriate to suggest classified only users keep their classifieds arguments over there?

If the guys an idiot and not used a proxy you can lift the original senders IP from any email sent to you.

The point is knowing the IP is pretty much useless in trying to track them down.... without a court order allowing you to find out more personal details from the ISP.....

Well that entirely depends on how much you care about the law....

The only people who know which account (thus property or handset) an IP is assigned to is the ISP. Unless you have mate who works there, how are you going to acquire said information 😕 You're not...

A bit like a mobile number - you have no idea if it's contract (and the bill payer has a postal address on record) or PAYG...

( Too much CSI pseudo-science! )

And sometimes, even the ISP doesn't know which property. They may get the right street...and obviously the authorities could find out eventually...probably.

That sounds like crap tbh. I've never had one where you diod not have to give them a full postal address, as well as them having your card details for billing.

Perhaps if you proxied through a chinese box or something then fair enough.

I'd wager that all this IP tracking would be a lot more difficult than Singletrack Towers checking the address he gave when he signed up for his premier account.

If required, by court order, to disclose information, they can provide the following (and more).... and I'm assuming the criminal isn't using a proxy of any kind. Just a plain home router, straight onto the internet.

1. Which account the IP was allocated to at what time.
2. Who the registered holder of the account is.
3. Their billing details - CC number, bank details (for DD), etc. The
police *may* need a separate court order to ask the bank for more details, if the ISP does not have enough.

4. The postal address of the account holder.
5. The MAC address of the router connected to them (used to forensically tie the home router and a PC at the home together)
6. Last time the router logged in and synchronised.
etc etc etc.

(In other words, LOTS of info about the IP given to them by the Police)

(And I've had to disclose this information while working at an ISP...)

Cougar - STW Towers are bound by the Data Protection Act, so can't give out peoples personal info to anybody unless legally required...

I got done on pinkbike, had the blokes IP address, last log in, email address and bank details.....and the police did nothing, they just simply were not interested.

Trailmoggy make an official complaint. Ask for the Officers name and number and escalate. I was gobsmacked when my Aunt bought a ringed car from an address and the Police said they hadn't even been round there.

I rang the local police station and because the ****t lived in Shrewsbury Greater Manchester police said it was West Mercia police's responsibility so rang West Mercia and they said It was Greater Manchesters responsibility, I even rang the met at London and they said it was up to my local police to report it to West Mercia.

Knowing this i made and appointment and my local police station, the police man I saw threatened to lock my up I had that big a paddy in there.

It was making me Ill so my wife just told me to forget it.

So in my experience the police are a complete waste of time.

No. Public sector passing the buck.

Sorry so its not a crime to them?

www.ipcc.gov.uk/en/Pages/your_complaint_.aspx

There are many branches of the Police. Yes they are stretched within departments with workload but this ****er may have multiple victims. Smoking, riding and drinking on others wages. If any STW officers think we shouldn't kick back at such service from forces? I'm all ears.

I would need a bit more than 'I bought something 5 days ago and it hasn't arrived yet' to record that as a crime. You wouldn't expect them to do that every time an order from a shop was late (Dave Hinde would have his own cell).

I think it is. Sorry, no comms from a new seller on a item like a iPad 3, then I reckon panic is warranted.

This does not excuse the OP for being a spanner, and sending a chunk of cash to a stranger on the internet.

I went there today and smashed him up, gave it to him badly, even broke his fingers so he won't be doing it again. Right daydream over

There once was a bloke, he was really sad
Spunked his daughters cash, on an old Ipad

It's been a week, and still no sign
Apparently it's pitchfork time

Lesson learnt, despite the thrift
Never pay with paypal gift

Here we have, a possibly ripped off, forum user in his natural habitat. The STW Classifieds.

We can tell by his furious typing that he has paid for something with Paypal gift.

Although, the pheromones he is releasing, suggest he believes this is an innocent mistake to make, and seems confused at the treatment he is receiving.

With no sign of the accused member, the forum has sensed weakness, so shuns the forum member. Some mocking him.

Ostracised, the forum member moves to another part of the internet...maybe to start his own tribe of Audi owning, IT managing, Orange riding bipeds.

Who would be giving you your money back? I see no reason for PP to be out of pocket for your complicit abuse of their system without them being able to recover the money from the "offender". And you would have to be a pretty daft scammer to set up their end with money still available.

What exactly are you going to do with the crime number.

(I'm not being harsh intentionally, I just don't see what he'll a crime number will be that's all)
