Does anyone have any tips on removing a load of 4" square wall tiles without making too much noise and at the same time leaving the plaster in good condition?
I've only removed tiles once, but once we'd got one off the wall so had an edge to work on they actually came off quite easily. The loudest part of it was them landing on the floor.
Just get it done quickly.
Pussyfooting about it trying to be quiet often if not always just ends up prolonging the noise.....
Aye what trail rat said. Few off then bring in the big guns... Aka the garden spade.
Then fix the plaster. The plaster won't be in one piece.
As for the noise... Its a flat people living in flats have to accept occasionally during the day people might get stuff done, if they have a problem tell the **** off. If you think the crashing noise of tiles coming off for an hour or two is bad try listening to someone chipping away for a few days.
Oh aye... PPE wear PPE tiles are bloody sharp and ping razor blades everywhere.
Wear ear defenders, problem solved.
wear PPE
This is good advice and I appreciate this is somewhat ironic in the current conditions but, include a certified face mask here. A mate of mine started a similar job in his new house a few weeks back whilst wearing a mask and still managed to hospitalise himself from the dust they kicked up. He's now got... I can't remember exactly what he called it but it's like acute asthma, he's been told he'll likely have breathing difficulties for a few months.
I'll crack on then. PPE included!
As Trail Rat says just do it quickly. If i was a neighbour I would take a brief loud noise over a prolonged medium noise every time
They will just flick off, as side the noise is the crashing and breaking when you drop em.
Just flick em off one by one and pile up neatly.
I say What trail rat says as well. Reasonable People surely have to accept that from time to time major work will be done in other homes. Me and my Dad tiled my shower badly amateur style using a tonne of tile cement (rather than dot and dab like we should have done), so when I had to remove it all I was anxious it was going to be a war of attrition getting the tiles off and really unpleasant for the direct neighbours, but the tiles came off easily. Maybe the thing to do is go round to direct neighbours and warn them but ultimately just go for it and do it as quick as possible during the day rather than evening. If it was me on the receiving end 9-5 is acceptable, outside that I'd be having words.
Ours were well stuck on. They came off OK but the remainder adhesive put up a fight. Loads of plaster came off cleaning that up. Not a job I'm keen to repeat so there isn't a single tile in the new scheme.
9-5 is acceptable,
How generous
What if the neighbour on the other side works Nightshift ?
You could always warn your neighbours that they'll be a bit of a noise for a while.
Cover the surface the tiles will be falling on with a blanket, warn and apologise to your neighbours and crack on. Shouldn't take all that long if you get stuck in.
If you live in a flat, you have to accept that noise is inevitable at some point. People would never be able to make improvements otherwise.

I did say "If it was me on the receiving end", there's yer clue, I don't work night shifts
