Have started to do a bit of walking as I still can't ride.
Bought a pair of leather boots which up until yesterday had been breaking in nicely.
The right boot is mega comfy but yesterday the left one started to give me some pain. It had up to that point felt fine.
It's digging into the front of my ankle bone on the inside of my foot. Seems to be where one of the lace hooks is.
Any tricks or tips on how to stop this happening/what has caused it?
I can't feel any difference between right and left boots when I've compare the two by hand so I don't thing theres a lump in the lining or anything.

Left foot probably bigger than the right, try loosening laces, or a different pattern. Are they new/decent enough socks? I thought my Scarpa's were done, as I was getting hot spots. I needed new socks, sorted now!.

Tried laces looser and tighter, same socks as were previously worn.
Just tried them again with a short walk to the post box and they're still pressing in the same spot.
Think there may be a bit of swelling on my ankle now so will wear some old boots tomorrow to try and take the pressure off it.

Pretty much this, and try a lacing pattern that skips that hook altogether.

Aye,as said,try a different lace pattern.
That worked for me on a pair I had.
I like that newer boots have some eyelet/hooks where you can lock up the laces, nice to be able to change the tension at different points.

Will try missing out that row of hooks as the laces seem to lock into the hooks and there's five on each side so plenty of options.
Any recommendations for some socks please?

It'll depend a bit on the season and type of walk you're doing but I like the Bridgedale Trekkers as a mid-weight all-rounder.

This may sound flippant, but if a pair of boots/shoes needed even 1% "breaking in" these days then I wouldn't buy them.

The materials, options and technology have progressed to where they should fit right out of the box.

Time has moved on!

Hugo, if your foot is a similar shape to the manufacturers last . .

I wear walking boots for a good few hours every day. The best socks I’ve found by far are Meindl. They’re a merino mix, keep their shape and hold up well.

Try zone lacing. Cross and pass the laces under each other before you miss out or bypass a pair of hooks. That way the laces don’t lose tension on the foot, then repeat after you’ve bypassed the ankle pair, and you can keep tension up the next couple of rows of hooks.

I'm with Hugo. Boots should fit 100% with everyday socks. they should need no breaking in. Any hot spots WILL get worse over time and 'better' socks are only masking a problem. The only time I may add special socks is if i'm walking for 8+ hours.

Find a manufacturer with a last that fits your foot. My feet only accept Adidas or Mammuts.

Just to be clear they have until now fitted very well and still do apart from this sudden digging in on the front of my one ankle bone.
There's no movement of my foot in them and no rubbing. The rest of my foot feels super comfortable with no hot spots.

Stu, it’s just your foot trying to tell you it’s had enough of this walking malarkey. What’ve you been doing, anyway? Is it a beer injury?

Stick a bit of card where it's rubbing to spread the load.

Wife had a Salomon shoe where one of the bits of lace was pressing a bit too much, bit of card acted as a temporary fix on the fells.

Been doing this and the bone's not repairing very well.
I've also had enough of walking TBH.

Can't really help you with your boots (got a pair of Altberg Tethera's arriving tomorrow myself).

But Bridgedale merino socks all the way. Also for the bike too.

At risk of asking a silly question are you sure the ankle is not the underlying problem rather than the boot?

I have to do the lace cross/lock thing and be fussy about the tongue placement with my Salomon AlpX's.
They're like trainers comfort wise - but too tight a lower lacing pulls one of the hooks into my foot, just in the gap between tongue and boot.

It's not a problem with an old pair of boots on so I'd guess not.

matt.
I've had another look at it and it might be where the tongue gusset folds over as I lace them up.
Will try lacing in a way that doesn't pull that particular hook in and put pressure on the tongue/my ankle bone.
