Three years ago a freak storm wiped out our house. Now we're waiting for a cyclone to hit. Not sure if it's on the news in the UK yet but there hasn't been a cyclone land in southern Queensland in 50 odd years.
I'm glad at least that we insisted on our place being rebuilt to cyclone standards.
Anyway waiting is really tedious.
We've spent a fair bit of time strapping things down, filling up sheds with loose items, servicing chainsaws etc but now it's time to wait. It's getting windy and the surf is apparently mental...approximately 30 hours until the cyclone crosses the coast. Earlier in the week predicted path was straight through our property but it looks to be heading slightly south now.
'All things shall pass' Good luck and I hope the record of a Cyclone never landing in Queensland continues.
Good luck, reeksy.
It's not quite headline news in the UK, but I've got an eye on it through work.
Where are you? Close to the coast?
my sister in Vic mentioned it just this morning, something on the Beeb here-- https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/articles/c78e7qn77vpo
Hope things pass without major incident reeksy.
I'm aware of it but only because of a friend that stays in central Brisbane - she's on a slightly elevated bit (Eildon Hill in Windsor) so keeping everything crossed for her.

Got family in Byron Bay. Suitably nervous on both sides of the globe...
Hope all is well.
I have a friend in Byron Bay. I can't imagine how it feels. Thoughts to everyone out there. We
Can do nothing useful other than hope you and yours all OK.
Sister-in-law is in Brisbane and has had warnings. Apparently they're safe from flooding from the rain and storm surge , but obviously not the wind.
Fingers crossed for you, and them.
Blimey. Good luck. Tie the bikes down.
Daughter #2 arrived in Bryon Bay yesterday!
Timing could have been "better" 😫
Best wishes to everyone in the vicinity. 🤞
It's getting windy and the surf is apparently mental...
Cowabunga, dude! Seriously though, I watched a ‘New Lives In The Wild’ in Australia, after a really bad storm, and the devastation was off the scale, so fingers crossed that it passes with minimal damage and disruption. 🤞🏼
Actually, it’s just occurred to me I remember seeing the photos you posted up afterwards, I’d completely forgotten about it, so hopefully with the stronger structure and preparation you’ll get through it unscathed. Good luck to you and yours.
The latest predictions are saying that it's going to very slowly make it to land... its' 300km off the coast and could take 48 hours to get here. That's not really ideal because the leading edge will be hanging around for longer.
King tide today I believe, and they're predicting 0.5m higher than normal due to the weather, which is problematic for all the poorly planned coastal suburbs.
South gets the worst of the rain. That's potentially horrific. Byron might be ugly. The news will focus on Brisbane.
If you have a strong stomach look up Lismore floods - 1500 houses lost in floods in 2022 and there's a strong chance they're going to get pummelled again.
There are "tent cities" all around these days too, plus people living out of cars, etc. I think there's work being done to get decent shelter for people.
extended waiting!!! How's it going, reeksy?
Oh, still waiting. Gold Coast and Northern NSW has been getting smashed as the southern edge is wet. It is supposed to reach land south-east of us in approximately 12 hours. It's been travelling at just 8kmph all day!
Not sure if it will kick off in advance though.
It's been windy but not terrible today.
Daughter is going slightly stir-crazy in the hostel.... they're not leaving until Tuesday (earliest) and the power has just gone off!
As an aside, why a tour company would take people into a zone just about to be hit by a cyclone is beyond me 😡
We have friends near Sydney who would take her in but there's no way out of Byron now.
